Children’s House Enrichment Activity Descriptions  

LEGO CLUB is offered to children ages 4-6 by Hickory Room teacher, Mrs. Kim. Dream it! Build it! Wreck it! The children at Riverbend are already naturally gifted creators. They will exercise their innate gift for building and learn to collaborate and create without fear of mistakes. Each class will include free building time, solving problems, challenging ideas and collaborating with peers. At the end of the session, each child will show his/her masterpiece and present it to parents. Monday 3:15 – 4:15 in the Hickory Room. 1 hour class for 11 weeks. $230 (includes supplies); Max #: 10 ZUMBA KIDS is offered to children ages 4-6 with former Riverbend parent and licensed Zumba instructor, Heidi Guilliano. In this 45 minute class, your child will warm up to music and Latin Rhythms, learn dance steps from Latin/other cultures, choreograph dance steps using creative movement and imagination, play games with props such as flags from Latin countries and learn the cultural background of dances that are learned. Monday 3:15 – 4:00 in the Community Playspace. 45 minute class for 11 weeks. $200; Max #: 10 ITTY BIDDY SPORTS, a mobile sports program is offered to Primary children ages 2.9-6. A teacher from Itty Biddy Sports comes with an array of age appropriate activities with a concentration on skill and coordination development. Lessons are non-competitive and fun filled, each with the goal of developing a child's self-confidence and self-esteem. Equipment is scaled down in size to make learning easier. Tuesday 3:15 - 4:00 in the Community Playspace. 45 minute class for 12 weeks. $320; Max #: 10 INTRODUCTION TO PIANO is offered to children ages 5–6 with Allegro Music. Students will learn the layout of the keyboard, musical alphabet and simple five finger songs. Musical notation is introduced and improvisation is emphasized. Games and activities are designed to allow the students to experience the musical concept in various ways and to make their own discoveries about it. Specific ear training games allow the students to develop their ‘inner hearing’ as well as their singing voices. Tuesday 3:15 - 4:15 in the Mulberry Room. 1 hour class for 12 weeks. $350; Max #: 5 GOOP, GAK, SLIME & MORE is offered to children ages 3–6 by Birch Room teacher, Miss Heather. Squish, splash, smash, squelch, slime, drop, smear, spray, and ooze are some of the things we will do/hear during this fun hands-on program. Children are doing many things at once when engaged in messy play. They can be observing, creating, building, exploring, imagining, discovering, investigating, interpreting, and even collaborating. Active learning through messy play. What child doesn't want to get slimed or at the least play with it! Each day we will create a new a group 'creation' and allow for individual crafting. Whether it is Goop, Gak, Slime, or many more possibilities, we can't list them all! Wednesday 3:15 – 4:15 in the Birch Room. 1 hour class for 12 weeks. $240 (includes supplies); Max #: 10

DALCROZE EURYTHMICS – Introduction to Music is offered to children ages 4-6 by Allegro Music School. The Dalcroze Eurythmics method incorporates the basic elements of music—rhythm, melody, harmony—with body movement, to provide a multidimensional approach to music learning. Eurhythmics invites the child to respond to music totally, by singing, playing, listening, and moving. Dalcroze is fun! It has the physicality of sports, aesthetic appeal of the arts, and is mentally challenging. Wednesday 3:15 – 4:00 in the Indoor Playspace. 45 minute class for 12 weeks. $350; Max #: 8 Wing Chun Kung Fu with Velocity Martial Arts & Fitness Center is offered to children ages 4-6. This children’s program is designed for fun and fostering an early love for the martial arts. Taught with a lighter approach than the adult class, Children’s Wing Chun will encourage better discipline and a more active lifestyle. Kids will learn the basics of Wing Chun and apply them through games to reinforce what they’ve learned, become better problem solvers, and develop into responsible martial artists. Uniforms and belts to be purchased separately. Information will be provided by the instructor. Thursday 3:15 – 4:15 in the Community Playspace. 1 hour class for 12 weeks. $290; Max #: 10 CHINESE with Miss Wei Zhou is offered to children ages 3-6. Children will learn the language & culture by singing, reading stories, playing games, doing crafts. Your child will put on shows for you and so much more! Students may need to purchase books separately. Thursday (Beginners welcome) 3:15 - 4:15 in the Hickory Room. 1 hour class for 12 weeks $395 (Option to sign up for entire year and charges will be billed 1 month prior to start of session); Max #: 10, Min #: 3 LOVE ALL AROUND YOGA with Kripalu certified instructor, Ingrid Tolley is offered to children ages 3-6. Children will practice yoga poses and guided meditations for inner strength. ULTIMATE FRISBEE Our 5th annual season of Boys and Girls Ultimate Frisbee Team, grades 4-8, begins with Coach Dave Wilkins on September 12. Riverbend will compete in a couple of games against other Montessori Schools (home & away). Monday 3:15 - 4:15 on the soccer field. 1 hour practices for 10 weeks. This class ends on 11/28. $220; Max #: 16 SPORT KARATE/ SEISHIN MARTIAL ARTS with Velocity Martial Arts & Fitness Center is offered to children in grades K-3. Seishin members and instructors have been featured in movies, documentaries, music videos, and on ESPN. The greatest success for Seishin occurs off the mat, as Seishin not only creates champions in the martial arts, but also champions in life. Students are taught the importance of principles such as effort, etiquette, character, sincerity, and self-control. Students develop relationships and life skills that will last them a lifetime. Belts & Uniforms to be purchased separately. Instructor will provide information. Monday 3:15 - 4:00 in the gym. 45 minute class for 11 weeks. $230; Max #: 10 CHORAL SINGING with Allegro Music School is offered to children in grades 1–5. This class brings students together for learning and fun, enhancing their development. Choral Singing provides ear training and a lively musical ensemble experience. Tuesday 3:15 – 4:15 in the Spanish Room. 1 hour class for 12 weeks. $240; Max #: 12 CHINESE with Wei Zhou is offered to Children in grades 1–6. In this morning program, children will focus on vocabulary building and simple conversations. Language and culture will be introduced along with singing, story reading, game playing, craft making, and more. Students may need to purchase books (charged separately). HOMEWORK CLUB for children in grades 3-8 on Mon & Fri with Miss Latona, Wed. with Mr. Wilkins & Thurs with Mr. Puleo. Is homework a struggle? Homework Club is designed to give students a chance to begin their homework right after it has been assigned. Drop in when needed and your account will be charged Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday 3:30-4:30. NO registration needed. $12/drop in at the end of each month. CRAFT CLUB with Miss Latona is offered to children in grades K–8. Join us for Craft Club in the middle school each Wednesday! Jewelry-making, clay-modeling, basic sewing and everything in between will be presented by "station" so students can choose which craft suits their interests that week. New to a craft? Fear not! Ms. Latona will help each student get comfortable with the basics and then give them time to practice and create. Wednesday 3:15 – 4:15 in the Middle School. 1 hour class for 12 weeks. $230; Max #: 15 STAGE BAND with Mr. Morant is offered to children in grades 4-8. The winter session of Stage Band will run into the Spring until the spring concert in May. Maximum of 5 students. Students work together in small ensembles comprised of the classic rock band rhythm section: electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, piano. Students apply classroom music theory concepts to learn popular songs while developing skills on their chosen instruments. Stage Band performs before their peers and the entire Riverbend community. Wednesday 3:15 – 4:15 in the Music Room. 1 hour class for 12 weeks. $220; Max #: 5 SPORTS & GAMES with Miss Salaway is offered to children in grades K-3. Your child will participate in cooperative, non-competitive games. Children will learn about sportsmanship, cooperation, rules, positioning and game strategy. Thursday 3:15 - 4:15 outdoors & in the gym. 1 hour class for 12 weeks. $220; Max #: 12 BEADING & SEWING with Mrs. Harea is offered to children in grades 1-8. Your child will learn the basics of knitting, stitching and hand sewing, to build creativity, reduce stress, develop patience & improve hand/eye coordination. Students will work on their individual projects using design and math concepts, creativity and problem solving skills. Instruction is geared to each student's needs and skill level from beginners to advanced. The class will provide a demonstration and practice in: cross-stitching, knitting, hand sewing and beading. MOVIE MAKERS with Mrs. Terino is offered to children in grades 4-8. Your child will learn the basics of creating short films, including storyboarding, filming techniques, editing, audio applications, and special effects. At the end of the session, each child will have the finished product of a movie they can share with the Riverbend community! Thursday 3:15 - 4:15 in the dLab. 1 hour class for 12 weeks. $250; Max #: 8 UKULELE CLASS (considered an introduction to Guitar instruction) with Allegro Music is offered to children in grades 1-3. If your children love making music with friends, then this is the class for them! The Ukulele Class is sure to provide lots of joyful music making for your child! Purchase of a Ukulele is required to participate in this class. Please visit Woodwind Brasswind, the recommended supplier of Mahalo Ukes. They offer a large variety of colors at very reasonable prices. Friday 3:15 - 4:00. 45 minute class for 11 weeks. $320. Option to sign up for the entire year and charges for winter and spring will automatically be billed 1 month prior to the start of the session. Max #: 8 RIVERBEND SOCCER Our first season of Boys and Girls Soccer Team, for children in grades 3-7, begins with Coach Pasquale Puleo on September 16. Riverbend will compete in a couple of games against other Montessori Schools. Friday 3:15 - 4:30. 1.25 hour class for 9 weeks. $230 and include a uniform. Max #: 15 MUSICAL INSTRUMENT LESSONS.  Classes end prior to the end of the Fall after school session to allow for makeup classes, if needed. If you require after school care when there are no classes scheduled, please contact the office to ensure that your child is added to the after school roster for that day to avoid late pickup fees.
