Bicycle Planto make Melbourne leading cycling city

Melburnians are encouraged to vote with their pedals and give the City of Melbourne theirfeedback on its draft Bicycle Plan 2012-16.

The plan was endorsed for consultation at last nights Council meeting. Lord Mayor RobertDoyle said it outlined Councils cycling priorities for the next four years, and set a strongframework for developing Melbourne into a leading cycling city.

Our new Bicycle Plan proposes almost 50 large and small-scale projects that will strengthenthe bike network both on and off road over the next four years, the Lord Mayor said.

We have come a long way from the painted bike lane line and as the number of cyclists inour city continues to grow its time to expand the network by creating innovative, safe lanesthat connect one side of the city to the other.

The City of Melbourne has already made a commitment to the bike network in its draft 2012-13 budget by contributing more than $5m towards Melbournes bike network. This fundingwill create new bike lanes on La Trobe Street to meet the need for an east-west cycling con-nection, safer lanes on Princes Bridge and new lanes on Elizabeth Street and Exhibition

    Street.

Eco City Councillor Cathy Oke said the Bicycle Plan was not only about growing the bikenetwork, but making it safer and easier to navigate in order to encourage more people to rideinto the city.

Right now 11 per cent of all vehicles travelling into the city in the morning peak are bikes andwe want to see a increase to at least 15 per cent by 2016 Cr Oke said.

In order to achieve this we need to create a network that helps less experienced cyclists feelsafe and comfortable enough to give it a go.

Connected City Councillor Kevin Louey said the plan took into account all the needs of cy-clists.

While new and safer bike lanes are our priority, we are also addressing the more practicalneeds of cyclists when they reach the end of their journey. We plan to install end-of-trip facili-ties such as bicycle parking, and encourage employers to provide showers and access tolockers in order to makes the experience that much easier for riders, Cr Louey said.

The plan is open for consultation until 2 July 2012. Visitwww.melbourne.vic.gov.au/bicycleplan for more information about how to have your say.
