The new 7th generation Astra, built at Ellesmere Port in the

UK, is lighter in weight, roomier and more compact than

its predecessor and is supplied with a series of all new,

lightweight, more efficient petrol and diesel engines.

Launched for sale in the UK in November 2015 as a 5 door

hatchback, with the Sports Tourer due to arrive in Spring

2016.

StructureThe new Astra is up to 200kg lighter than its predecessor, depending on trim level, with an average weight reduction of 130kg.

The body in white, (less hang-on panels, front bumper reinforcement and paint), weighs in at 252.5kg.

Press Hardened Steel (PHS) is used in the A and B Post reinforcements, with Ultra High Strength Steel (UHSS), including Complex Phase (CP) and Martensitic Steel (MS), being used for the sill panel reinforcement.

Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS), including Dual Phase (DP) and Transformation Induced Plasticity Steels (TRIP), are used in the B Post closing and front chassis legs.

High Strength Steels (HSS), including High Strength Interstitial-Free (HSIF), Bake Hardened (BH), and High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA), are used in the roof, floor and chassis leg closing panels.

Aluminium is used in the front and rear bumper reinforcements.

In repair, structural adhesive is used extensively in panel replacement, MIG brazing is used for butt welds, MIG slot brazing and waterproof rivets are used in several body repair areas, such as quarter panel, rear panel and bodyside, panels.

As well as being optimised to lessen pedestrian injury in the event of impact, the front end of the vehicle is designed with sacrificial bracketry and components designed to absorb impact damage and to prevent further damage and intrusion.

Most of the brackets used to mount the front end panels are spot welded in production and are riveted (waterproof) and bonded in repair.

Headlamp bracket repair kits are also serviced.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) The SRi model is fitted with a Driving Assistance Pack as standard; (optional extra on all other models). The pack consists of the following systems, controlled by a windscreen mounted, forward facing camera:

Forward Collision Alert with automatic City Emergency BrakingAt speeds over 5mph, this system will warn the driver by giving audible and visual warning signals when approaching slower vehicles too fast from behind. The visual warning is transmitted onto the inside of the windscreen via the visual display unit, as well as appearing on the instrument cluster. At speeds between 5mph and 53mph, additional braking support is provided to help the driver brake more quickly and effectively. At speeds between 5mph and 37mph, if the driver takes no avoiding action, the system will apply the brakes automatically (emergency braking) to avoid low speed rear end collisions if it senses a potential impact.

Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep AssistAt speeds above 35mph, the system warns the driver when it detects unintentional, (no active steering or signalling from the driver), drifting outside of lane markings. The Lane Keep Assist will automatically provide steering input if it detects no driver input. As well as the audible and visual warnings, if the vehicle is fitted with haptic seats, three pulse vibrations will be felt on the left or right side of the seat if the vehicle drifts left or right.

Traffic Sign RecognitionThis system recognises and displays speed limits and other important road traffic signs, including temporary electronic signage.

Following Distance IndicatorThis system indicates on the infotainment screen how many seconds you are from the vehicle in front, helping to maintain a safe distance.

Note: Calibration is only required when a new camera is fitted, it is not required for windscreen replacement where the original camera is removed and re-fitted. When calibration is required, it is carried out dynamically by driving the vehicle.

A Parking Pack is available as an optional extra on SRi and Elite models, the pack includes:

Side Blind Spot AlertActive at speeds over 6.2mph, this illuminates an amber warning LED within the relevant door mirror when it detects a vehicle within its side blind spots, (within 3 metres of the ultrasonic side sensors located in the rear bumper cover on the left / right sides). The LED will flash and an audible warning will also be given if the indicator stalk is operated and the system has detected another vehicle.

Advanced Park AssistUltrasonic side sensors, located one each side within the front and rear bumper covers, working in conjunction with the front and rear ultrasonic parking sensors, detect a suitable parking space and the system automatically steers the vehicle into it, with the driver only having to drive forward and reverse when indicated by the system.

Rear View CameraLocated within the rear bumper cover, (or tailgate on Sports Tourer), this is activated when reverse gear is engaged and displays a view of the area behind the car on the infotainment screen.

Front and Rear Parking Distance SensorsThe ultrasonic parking distance sensors are mounted within the front and rear bumper covers, 4 front, 4 rear and they detect objects within a 2 metre range giving audio/visual assistance when manoeuvring the vehicle.

IntelliLux LED Matrix HeadlampsAn optional extra on SRi & Elite models, each headlamp incorporates a matrix of 8 electronically controlled individual LED lights which replace the main beam function and supplement the dipped beam (halogen projector) function. Working in conjunction with the forward facing camera and information received from the vehicle’s other sensors, individual LEDs are activated dependant on the varied road and traffic conditions. The system has the following smart features where the lighting automatically adapts to the driving conditions: parking light, static cornering lights, country lights, urban/town light, highway/motorway light and energy saving mode. LED rear tail lights are included within the IntelliLux LED Matrix Headlamp option.

Technology All models are fitted with the R4.0 IntelliLink infotainment system, which incorporates Digital Radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity for Apple and Android smartphones. Navi 900 IntelliLink, standard on Tech Line, SRi and Elite models, adds a larger screen, voice control and an integrated Sat Nav.

Vauxhall OnStar, standard on SRi and Elite, optional on all other models, gives access to a host of Vauxhall services, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Services include: Automatic Crash Response, Wi-Fi, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, Vehicle Diagnostics and Smartphone App.

An active Grille automatically opens and closes to ensure the front of the vehicle remains at its most aerodynamic. The system closes the air intake shutters until it senses that a higher rate of cooling air flow is required and they need to be opened.

The driver and passenger seats have been certified by AGR, a German company campaigning for healthier backs. The seats are ergonomically designed with multiple adjustments. There is an option on the driver’s seat to add: electric operation, memory function, massaging and ventilation. Heating is available on front and rear outer seats.

Bi-Turbo

PowertrainsThe new Astra range is powered by a series of all new ECOTEC petrol, diesel and turbo engines, including the super-efficient ecoFLEX variants. The engines have been re-engineered to be more efficient, delivering higher performance with greater efficiency and reduced CO2 levels, compared to the previous Astra. Engines are available with or without the Start/Stop system.

Transmissions are available in 5 or 6 speed manual, 6 speed automatic or 5 speed Easytronic. ActiveSelect, allows the automatic transmission to be used like a sequential manual gearbox.
