Over 25 Years Experience

L - R: Jason Dudley and Dave CollandraRising heating and cooling costs motivate homeowners andbuilding contractors to search for ways to make buildings moreeconomical to heat and cool. Those who make insulationupgrades save hundreds, often thousands annually.Frequently, even the most highly efficient heating and coolingunits will seem inadequate without proper insulation.During this winter, the Northeast reached record breaking lowtemperatures for extended periods of time. Ice damming andicicles on homes and businesses was far worse than it’s everbeen. These occur when heat from inside a home escapesthrough poorly insulated roofs and eaves. This costly eventmeans property owners are essentially heating the outdoors! There are other costs as well. When snow melts due to poorinsulation, water from the melted snow will re-freeze at theeaves creating ice dams and icicles. As the ice builds up, it canlift shingles creating a path for water to enter the home. Theresult is damage through blistering paint, destroying sheet rockor plaster, even rotting the buildings frame. These problemsare avoidable!Traditional insulation materials such as fiberglass or cellulosehave cold R-Value ratings. This means that when thetemperature drops, they perform at a much lower R-Value.Lower R-Value = more warm air heating the great outdoors! The probability of costly repairs related to this freeze-thawcycle is likely to eat into your summer vacation budget! Whenyou see icicles and ice dams forming on your home or business,it”s a huge indicator that your energy dollars are literally goingthrough the roof. Consider using spray foam insulation to sealthe areas where heat escapes. The R-Value of spray foaminsulation does not reduce when the temperature drops. Unliketraditional insulation, spray foam doesn’t deteriorate. Spray

foam provides consistent performance for year round resultsreducing both heating and cooling costs.Hi, I am Dave Collandra. I’ve been a spray foam applicator inthe capital region for over eight years. During this time, I’vehad success solving problems like ice dams and drafty homes, significantly reducing the high costs of heating and coolingbills. It’s likely that serious insulation problems are damagingyour home and your wallet!Insul-Tech Energy Solutions can keep you warmer in the winterand cooler in the summer. REGIONAL OotM COMPETITION

Dear Averill Park School Community: On Saturday, March 7,Algonquin Middle School hosted the regional Odyssey of theMind (OotM) competition, for teams in the Rensselaer, Columbia, and Greene Counties. OotM is an international program thatprovides students in elementary through high school levelsopportunities for creative problem-solving. These problemsrange in scope from building mechanical devices to dramaticinterpretation of classical works. Over 100 teams competed, and only the top teams are able to move on tostate-widecompetition.Five teams from Averill Park will represent our area next monthat the state OotM competition. They are from Miller Hill/SandLake School, Algonquin Middle School, and Averill Park HighSchool. More teams from Averill Park are moving on than fromany other district in our region! We are all very proud of theiraccomplishments, and wish them the best in the next round. We are also very proud of our staff, who agreed at the lastminute to guarantee that a competition happened at all. Aweek prior to the competition, the school district that hadbeen preparing since October to host the regional OotMcompetition had to back out due to facility problems. AP agreedto step up, and in one week held the competition that hadmore than 2,000 people visit Algonquin. Thanks to all whomade this possible, which included students, staff, faculty, administrators, Friends of Algonquin Athletics, and volunteersfrom Sand Lake Kiwanis. It would not have been possiblewithout their willingness to take on this gargantuan task. Ourcommunity should be proud of how well they all representedAP in the region.~ Sincerely, Jim Hoffman and the Averill Park Board of Education

SCHOOL PTA - ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGNThe PTA supports all MHSL students through volunteering and thefunding of numerous educational and enrichment programs. Theseprograms not only support and enhance the education and learningour children deserve, but also provide opportunities for our childrenthey may not otherwise enjoy due to the fiscal challenges ourschool and district are experiencing. For the MHSL PTA to provide this kind of support, we need to raisemoney. Specifically, $3,000!The MHSL PTA’s primary fundraiser for the 2014-2015 is an AnnualGiving Campaign. What is an Annual Giving Campaign? It is aneffective, hassle-free, and direct cash fundraiser. There is nooverhead or selling of any items during this campaign where theschool only receives 30-50% of what your purchase. Instead, withthe Annual Giving Campaign, 100% of your donation will go directlyto MHSL PTA, and 100% of your contribution is tax deductible. The Annual Giving Campaign runs from March 10, 2015-March 31,2015. During this focused fundraising effort, families are encouragedto reach out to friends, family, and neighbors and ask them todonate to our school’s PTA. Extra donation forms are available onEdline or on the PTA shelf in the school office. The success of the Annual Giving Campaign rests on the generosityof parents, teachers, community members and businesses, all joiningtogether to support our efforts. We recognize that the economyhas impacted all of us in different ways, but we strongly encourageeveryone to participate if possible. Please show your support foryour child, your child’s school, and the goals of MHSL PTA bydonating. The more families participate, the stronger our communitygrows. No matter how much you give, your contribution is important.

The American Red Cross encourageseligible blood donors to become everydayheroes by giving blood in celebration of

By donatingblood, eligible donors can help save the lives of patients inneed. Those who are unable to give blood can support blooddonations by organizing a blood drive, volunteering to assistwith Red Cross activities, or creating a SleevesUp virtual blooddrive online at redcrossblood.org/SleevesUp and asking othersto make a lifesaving donation. To make an appointment to give blood, download the Red CrossBlood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767).Upcoming blood donation opportunities• 3/19/2015: 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m., Hudson Valley CommunityCollege Siek Campus Center, 80 Vandenburgh Ave, Troy;• 3/20/2015: 1:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., American Legion MelvinRoads Post, 200 Columbia Turnpike, Rensselaer; • 3/23/2015:

Often patients tell us “nothing is hurtingor bothering me, I am all good so please

put off my “cleaning” visit for a later date.” What we wishto share with our community is the value in keeping yourcheck up visits. Prevention is less expensive than neglect.Even more importantly, your mouth is the gateway to totalhealth. The Surgeon General has directly linked good oralhealth with complete overall health. Many patients are notaware of how much is discovered and checked during yourhygiene visit.Examination includes so much more than checking for decay.A complete soft tissue examination is done to look for signsof bleeding. Many feel bleeding is normal, but actually it’s asign of an active bacterial infection. Rarely is any pain everfelt. However, periodontal disease is the leading cause oftooth loss. Periodontal disease is silent and painless, yetincreases your risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, lung and respiratory diseases as well as low birth weightbabies.During a visit to our practice we take into consideration anyunderlying medical conditions that may benefit from treatingthe periodontal condition of your mouth.Today 25% of oral cancers occur in people who have neversmoked and do not have any other lifestyle risk factors.HPV not only causes cervical cancer, but also 22% of oralcancer cases. HPV is the leading cause of oral cancers inadults 18-39 years old. High risk of oral cancers also existswith tobacco and alcohol consumption. Our team usesVelscope Vx (as seen on Dr. Oz and The Doctors) to identifyoral diseases early, while it’s still early to treat.Do not put off your hygiene visit – your total well-being isdependent on it. Feel free to call our office with anyquestions.

Hello, Warrior fans! The winter sports season finally came to

an end last Friday, 3/13, at the girls varsity basketball team’s

last game of the season. The lady Warriors made it to the

Class A Regionals, but fell short to a tough team in Jamesville-

Dewitt by a score of 55-46. Although the score went back and

forth the whole game, including eight lead changes through

the first three quarters, it was Jamesville-Dewitt that came

out on top. Junior, Sam Laranjo, finished the game with 13

points and senior, Alyssa Anthony, chipped in 12 all from behind

the 3-point line. Congratulations to the girls for finishing the

season with a 15-9 record and for making it as far as they did!

Good luck to all of the athletes at AP that are beginning their

spring sports seasons, including softball, baseball, outdoor

track and field, boys and girls lacrosse, and boys tennis!

The Friends of Algonquin Athletics and AP Indoor Track have

joined forces to establish a 5k run/3k walk (Run for the

Warriors) to benefit Modified Sports and Indoor Track. The

race will be held on May 17th and will start at Algonquin. If

anyone is interested in signing up, visit zippyreg.com or visit

the Facebook page named Run for the Warriors 5K!

I wish all of our athletes good luck in their tryouts/practices in

the week ahead! I will be back next week with another

Warriors athletics update. If you have any questions at all,

please feel free to email me at [email protected]. Go

NOT SO FAST,

MR. LANGLEYLetter to the Editor: In hisMarch 5th Report in theAdvertiser, East GreenbushSupervisor Keith Langleydeemed it “worthy” to providethe residents with a snapshotof our financial position. Thisis just not good enough basedon the fact that Mr. Langleyhas ignored his responsibilityto provide any real, measur-able, audited reports duringhis entire time in office. Alsoin that report, “The conserv-ative estimate projected is lessthan $750,000 will be out-standing after all postingshave been completed.” Thisjust is not good enoughbecause there is no datecertain and no indication ofwhich postings are out-standing and why they areoutstanding. If we are to bel ieve Mr.Langley (having been left littlechoice), his administration hasreduced the inter-fundborrowing by approximately1.6 million in three years. While this is positive, we mustalso consider that the newwaste treatment plant hasincreased our indebtednessby up to 14 million. In short, the last administration has lefta debt and the currentadministration will do thesame. It is time to abandonthe tired old time politics fromboth of the established partiesin East Greenbush. The Annual Update Document(AUD) is due to the NYSComptroller in April, with aprovision for the CFO to applyfor an extension, if necessary. It appears that the currentEast Greenbush CFO, Mr.Langley, plans to be late and /or have difficulty producingthe document since his March5th report proclaims we willhave an AUD in May. Hefurther states that the AUDwill “provide us with a greaterviewpoint of where we stand”.Why wait? I fear it is becauseMr. Langley has no idea wherewe stand and that is just sad.~Eileen S. Grant, E.GreenbushEditors Note: The above articledoes not necessarily reflect theopinion or endorsement of theEditor or the Staff of THEADVERTISER, and for all intentsand purposes is impossible toverify the truth and veracity of itscontents.

WHERE’S THE PROOF?

Letter to the Editor: East Greenbush Supervisor Keith Langley’srecent assertion that he has returned our town to a stronger, more financially secure position begs the question: where’s theproof? Two accounting firms were paid roughly $65,000 tocomplete a town audit and were unsuccessful because ofdisarray in our bookkeeping practices. Without an audit anyproclamations made by the current administration that we aremoving to a stronger financial position amounts to nothing morethan campaign propaganda. Our town’s books are in suchdisarray that our Comptroller needed to use the end of 2013 asa starting point for our budget because essentially the numbersaren’t there or don’t make sense prior to that date.Supervisor Langley’s newly optimistic view of our finances differsfrom his alarming argument that we needed a casino to solveour financial problems. We spent 8 grueling months being toldthat we desperately needed the revenue produced by a casinoto solve our financial problems, but without properly auditedbooks he had no foundation to determine how much revenuewas needed then just as he has no foundation now for tellingus how well we are doing. Our Supervisor allowed Capital Viewto blatantly mislead the Gaming Commission that our townsuffered from economic distress when the only distress wesuffer comes from the failure to manage the town’s finances.Capital View presented a 2013 Newsmax article that put ourtown on a list of top 20 US cities facing bankruptcy, omitting theone sentence explanation for us making the l ist:mismanagement of the town’s finances. Instead they tried topaint Hampton Manor and Prospect Heights as ‘pockets ofdistress.’ Rather than admit their incompetence, our Town Boardallowed Capital View and their not so slick PR firm to use townresidents as a punching bag for 8 months. The Supervisor and any Town Board member who runs forelection this year will have been in office for four years of afinancial disaster. Let’s not make the mistake of believingcampaign rhetoric like that of Supervisor Langley, we hold thepower in this election. ~ Bonnie Kenna, RensselaerEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of

A COVENANT WRITTEN WITHIN

OUR HEARTS

In worship on Sunday, March 22, 2015, the Nassau ReformedChurch will meditate on Jeremiah 31:31-34 wherein the prophetJeremiah writes about a new day in Israel when there shall bea new covenant, written on the hearts of God’s people. He iswriting to the children of Abraham, who at the time of thewriting, were captive in Babylon because they did not followthe Ten Commandments and trust God for their salvation. Godloves His people and has not, nor will he not abandon them.Jeremiah announces that God is going to try something new.He is going to put a covenant within people’s hearts” - a newcovenant made in the obedient love of Jesus. In the sermontitled, “A Covenant Written within Our Hearts,” the ReverendEdward L. Van Kampen will point to how much God loves us andforgives us for all our mistakes; and how much he loves us so asto create in us a clean heart; and put the Holy Spirit within us.After Children’s Time, beginning at 11 a.m., during which pastorwill give a message for the young folk, titled “Written on OurHearts”, they will move to the classroom for instruction on thelife and teachings of Jesus. Worship at The Nassau ReformedChurch is in its chapel, 43 Church Street (Route 20).

Sno-Mo ECONOMICS

Letter to the Editor:This winter was memorable for many reasons - intense cold, large snow accumulation, and more local snowmobiling thanever before. Recent improvements to the local snowmobiletrails, coupled with adequate snow coverage increased theaccessibility to the Town of Sand Lake’s amenities. Long wintersare typically tough on sales; however, the New York StateSnowmobile Association’s (NYSSA) owner survey shows howthe recreational sport can ease the pain on local businessowners. The 5,916 respondents to the survey reported theyspent 123,373 days of snowmobiling in 2011. Of these 123,373days of fun, 3.9% were in the Capital Region. This ranks thecapital region as one of the most ridden regions of New Yorkoutside the Adirondack Park. The survey also indicated thatenthusiasts spent their money on things that Sand Lake canoffer. Of the $428.5 mil lion dollars directly spent onsnowmobiling, $56 million was on gasoline, $26 million was spenton apparel, and $35.5 million was spent on food. The totaleconomic impact of snowmobiling in New York was $857 millionin 2011. While local snowfall concentrated much of this impactto the lake effect regions, this winter allowed more moneythan ever to be spent in our local community. For economicreasons, let’s hope for a repeat in 2016!~ Andrew Fasoldt, Siena CollegeFinance & Economics

CASINO LETTER WRITERS SPEW

MISINFORMATION

Letter to the Editor: Last week’s Advertiser was certainly full ofa lot of misinformation in the letters to the editor. Mrs. Tierneytried to claim that the East Greenbush Town Board did not dotheir due diligence simply because she was anti-casino. Thefact is the Board DID do its due diligence, DID ask the toughquestions and realized that this would probably be the biggesteconomic engine to come to our town ever. She and anotherletter writer can’t stop crowing about the fact that the TownBoard was wrong and that those against the casino areresponsible for it not coming to East Greenbush. Great Job!You single handedly killed a reoccurring source of revenue forthe town that would have generated millions of dollars for ourschools and the Town. You should be proud. Remember thisnext time when you ask about parks and roads and lakes. The award for hypocrisy though has to go to letter writer DonJohnson. In his letter he claims, “two CPA firms have told theTown Board that the financial records of the Langley and previousadministrations are in such a state as to be un-auditable”. Hecalls the Supervisors latest article about the improved financialcondition of the town a fairytale with “no basis in reality”. Theone living a fairytale, however, must be Mr. Johnson as heseems to think that by simply stating something it must be true. The financial mess of the Town’s book pre-dates the Supervisorby many many years and Mr. Johnson knows that. The fact isunder the leadership of Supervisor Langley we are finallyrighting the problems of the past and pursuing sound fiscalpolicies. So we have three separate letter writers all condemning theSupervisor and the Board. All three were intimately involvedwith the CasinNO group and Mr. Johnson has the unmitigatedgall to claim that the Supervisor’s monthly report is “nothingmore than an early move to “campaign mode”. If anyone is incampaign mode, Mr. Johnson, it is you and your cohorts.~ Michael Rossello, RensselaerEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for allintents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of its
