Missed the Advent Workshop? There are a few wreath forms and candle sets available from Leslee Kirkconnell. The cost is $21.00.

Devotional Guides for families are available in the information center or from Leslee Kirkconnell. Advent is a good time to develop a habit of regular prayer and learning together, especially if you have an Advent wreath.

Lighting the Advent Candles Our Advent journey from darkness to light is symbolized by the increasing candlelight from the Advent wreath each week. This Advent journey has a parallel in the travels of the three kings as they seek the light of the Christ Child. On the fourth weekend of Advent, our church will be producing "Amahl and the Night Visitors," a Christmas opera imagining the visit of the three kings in the home of a poor, crippled shepherd boy and his mother. Each Sunday, one of the characters from the opera will introduce the lighting of the candles and relate a portion of their story, illuminating our path to the Christ Child.

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light Those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them light has shined.

The sun is rising later. The sun is setting earlier.

Advent comes as the hours of our days that are sheathed in darkness increase.

And, so we wait for the light of God’s coming reign with the Old Testament’s Priestly writer, the Psalmist, and the Prophets.

Come, wait for the light as we worship at 8:30, 9:45, and 11 a.m. each Sunday during Advent.

December is Christmas Joy Offering Season. One of four special offerings of the PC(U.S.A.), this offering supports retired church workers through the Board of Pensions and our racial ethnic schools. Monday, December 7th: 7:00 pm Service of Wholeness and Healing (Sanctuary)

There are many moments in our lives when we need comfort. There are tough times when we yearn for consolation. The suffering people who looked for the long-awaited Messiah were given a hope-filled image of God in the writings of Isai-ah. It expresses the belief that no matter what happens to us, God will be there to comfort and support us. Christmas can be a time for many when we are in need of that reassurance and comfort. Perhaps we are grieving over the loss of a loved one, struggling with illness, or have experi-enced the loss of a job. We wonder how we will get through the holidays. This will be a service in the Taize style which includes time for singing, scripture, reflection, candle lighting and prayer. Those looking for comfort, hope, wholeness, and renewal may join us for a time of quiet reflection and meaningful words and music. Stephen Ministers will be available for private prayer and remembrance.

Covenant (9:45 a.m. Congregation House) Gerardo Marti, the LR King Associate Professor of Sociology at Davidson Col-

lege, will teach: “Innovation, Resistance, and the Near Future of the American Church.” Christianity—both as a set of firm beliefs and a configuration of ritu-al practices—is always changing, and the changing structures of the 21st Cen-tury provide particular opportunities and challenges to the development of Christianity in the United States. The class will focus on three themes over three weeks: intriguing innovations in American Christianity, the dynamics of resistance and traditionalism in relation to Christianity in congregational life, and speculation on the near future of the American Church.

5:00 pm White Gift Christmas Pageant (Sanctuary) There will be a collection of food as part of the White Gift Christmas Pageant which is presented by the DCPC Youth group. Just as the wise men took gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Christ child, all are invited to approach the manger with gifts of food (or monetary donations) which will be distributed to families through Loaves and Fishes at the Ada Jenkins Center.

In keeping with the Christmas holidays, we are asking for specific kinds of food this year: Please bring any or all of the following: a canned ham, boxed stuffing, boxed potatoes, canned yams or canned fruit. These foods will help their recipients eat a holiday meal. Loaves and Fishes always puts your contributions to good use as the need is great.

POST-pageant White Gift Christmas Pageant Sandwich Supper (Congregation House) It’s soup and sandwiches prepared by Chef Betsy. We just ask that folks bring a donation to offset the cost of the food. But let’s really stress that they do NOT HAVE TO PREPARE AND BRING ANY FOOD. Just show up and eat!! And have lovely holiday fellowship!! We really want people to come this year, so we need to make it really clear and obvious within all the hype about the pageant itself. Like.. DON’T FORGET THE SOUP & SANDWICH SUPPER………you won’t have to cook that night! Plus, there will be Christmas music!

Wednesday, December 16th: 5:00 pm Gathering Around the Word (parlor) A time for digging deep into the passages of Scripture for Advent as reflect together both upon the previous Sunday’s text and the text for the following Sunday. Read Isaiah 59: 1-10; 60: 1-5.

We believe that families are up against a lot in today's world. It is important for parents to have the sup-port, the information, and the resources that they need to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ and to help their children grow in faith. Welcome to Faith and Families - a community of parents at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. Click here to view past Faith & Family Newsletters on our website. JOIN US FOR OUR Faith & Family Monthly Gathering – Holidays and Holy Days December 6th from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. in Room 201 at DCPC As we approach Christmas we are constantly bombarded with images from our culture that remind us of the secular emphasis of this “winter holiday.” How can we help create space to remember the “reason for the season”? How are followers of Jesus encouraged to interact with the culture? Do we participate whole heartedly or do we pick and choose more selectively what aspects of the cultural celebrations we will make our own? How are these special occasions opportunities to grow in faith and faithfulness and to give glory to God? Join us for conversation on December 6th in Room 201!! Youth are invited to participate in weekly youth events (dinner, youth group, Roxology, hanging out, etc. while children are in programs designed especially for them in Jetton Hall and the nursery. Parents will gather in Room 201 for the study and conversation about “Holidays and Holy Days.”

Faith and Families Monthly Gathering

DCPC recently launched a new senior adult ministry named SAGES (Senior Adults Growing, Engaging and Serving). This new umbrella ministry will seek to meet the spiritual, physical and social needs of our older members through prayer, education, mission, service, fellowship, care, and worship. SAGES will host regular gatherings for fellowship and learning, support one another with prayer, calls, cards and contacts, and maintain a strong link with The Pines at Davidson through fellowship, worship, edu-cation and support. SAGES is divided into three sub-committees, Active Adults, which will host regular gatherings for speak-ers, meals, fellowship, etc., trips, educational opportunities, and others; Senior Connections who will check in with home-bound members and those going through illness or surgery, host prayer partner-ships and coordinate with the Congregational Care committee for other needs; and finally the Pines Link, which will continue as the former Pines Connection to keep links with our members at The Pines. SAGES hosted its first luncheon on October 27, which was attended by more than 70 members! It was a wonderful event full of joy and enthusiasm for this new ministry. Additionally we hosted a casual post-worship lunch at the Davidson Commons on Sunday, November 15. We look forward to many future events and gatherings as this new ministry gets off to a great start! If you are interested in hearing more about SAGES, being involved, or have an idea for this group, please contact Mary Margaret Porter, Associate Pastor for Visitation and Senior Adults at [email protected] or 704-892-5641.

COMING SOON! E-GIVING OPPORTUNITIES! DCPC is pleased to announce the introduction of E-GIVING, which offers three electronic options for making your regular offerings. Each of the three options offers convenience for you and provides a much needed consistency in giving for our congregation. E-GIVING features the following three options for you to consider: Bill Pay—using your bank’s online bill pay system, you can establish regular offerings to be deducted from your checking account and sent to the church. Bank Draft—by enrolling through the church office, your regular offerings can be deducted directly from your checking account. Online Giving—your regular offerings are processed by using either your debit or credit card and man-aged by you through your computer, tablet, or smartphone. If you are giving on a weekly basis, you will no longer need to write 52 checks a year! And when illness, vacation, travel, or other circumstances prevent you from attending services, E-GIVING will allow your regular offerings to continue on an uninterrupted basis. Your support is vital to the success of our E-GIVING program. We are preparing authorization forms and a “Frequently Asked Questions” brochure for more information. In addition, information about E-GIVING will be available on the church’s website www.dcpc.org.

PROF TONY ABBOTT HONORED WITH STATE’S HIGHEST CIVILIAN PRIZE

October 19, 2015 by Davidson College

Professor Emeritus of English Tony Abbott is one of six outstanding North Car-olina residents selected to receive the state's highest civilian honor this year. Governor Pat McCrory will present the North Carolina Award to the recipients Thursday evening, Nov. 12, at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Convention Center in Durham.

In addition to Abbott, the honorees are Anthony Atala of Winston-Salem (Science), Senator James T. Broyhill of Winston-Salem (Public Service), A. Ev-erette James Jr., of Chapel Hill (Fine Arts), Howard N. Lee of Chapel Hill (Public Service) and Patricia McBride of Charlotte (Fine Arts). Created by the General Assembly, the North Carolina Awards have been presented annually since 1964. The award recognizes significant contributions to the state and nation in the fields of fine arts, literature, public service and science. Abbott is a native of San Francisco, California, who received his undergraduate degree from Princeton Uni-versity and his doctorate from Harvard University in 1962. His teaching career at Davidson began in 1964 and concluded officially with his retirement in 2001, and unofficially in 2006 when he last taught a section of humanities. His major fields of interest are modern drama, creative writing, and literature and religion. Abbott was honored for his teaching during his long tenure at Davidson with the college's Thomas Jefferson Award in 1969 and the Hunter-Hamilton Love of Teaching Award in 1997.

DISTINGUISHED CAREER In addition to mentoring Davidson students, he has dedicated himself to the community of writers in the Tar Heel state by presenting frequent readings of his work, attending readings of other writers and serving lead-ership roles with writers' organizations. Abbott is past president of the Charlotte Writers Club and the North Carolina Writers Network, and also past chair of the North Carolina Writers Conference. He has won the Thomas H. McDill Award of the North Caroli-na Poetry Society three times. In 1996 he was honored by St. Andrews College with the Sam Ragan Award for his writing and his service to the literary community of North Carolina. Abbott also has served regularly as a Sunday School teacher at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. With the late Professor Daniel Rhodes of the Department of Religion he developed a course in "American Litera-ture and Religious Thought." After Rhodes' retirement, Abbott developed his own course, "Three Contempo-rary American Prophets: Flannery O'Connor, Frederick Buechner and Walker Percy." He has lectured widely on these three authors to both church and secular groups in North and South Carolina. Abbott was instrumental in development of creative writing as an academic focus at Davidson. A scholar of George Bernard Shaw and William Butler Yeats, Abbott underwent a transformation after the unexpected death of his young daughter. He began writing poetry as an outlet to help heal his grief. His writing resulted in the title poem of his first book of verse, The Girl in the Yellow Raincoat, which was nominated for a Pulitz-er Prize. He has published steadily since then. His volumes of poetry include If Words Could Save Us, A Small Thing Like a Breath, The Search for Wonder in the Cradle of the World, The Man Who, and his "greatest hits" vol-ume of 2009, New and Selected Poems. Abbott's latest work, published in 2014, is The Angel Dialogues, a suite of poems centered upon a cynical po-et and an iconoclastic angel. The book showcases his ability to take on deep and emotional subjects, ex-pressed in words that everyone can understand. He also has written two novels. Leaving Maggie Hope won the 2003 Novello Literary Award, and was fol-lowed in 2007 by a sequel titled The Three Great Secret Things. The North Carolina Awards are administered by the state's Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. No state monies are used for the Nov. 12 awards event. Tickets are available online. For information, call 919-807-7388 or 919-807-7256.

Congregational Retreat

Letting Go of Should

When we baptize we hear the words, “you are my beloved son, beloved daughter, with whom I am well pleased.” We trust in the power of God’s love before we can even acknowledge that mighty love. But somehow along the way, this message of love gets lost. The demands of the world weigh us down and we constantly feel like we should be more, do more, have more. Even as we live out our faith we are plagued with the notion that we should really bake one more casserole or ought to serve on one more committee or need to give a little more money or time. Faith becomes a list of things we should do or ought not to do. And yet, over and over in the gospel we read stories of how Jesus came and set people free from the things that bind them. Jesus offered freedom from sin so that we might be free for grateful obedience. But is there more to a life of faith than that? How might we let go of the shoulds in our life and in our faith so that we might embrace the freedom God desires for us?
