THE UNITY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH

In John chapter 17, our Lord Yeshua (Jesus) prayed for his universal community of believers and disciples called the Body of Christ (The Christian Church). This prayer in John 17 is known as his great High Priestly prayer for us, and in this prayer he states the following:

"Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me... I have given them your Word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your Word is truth... I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me... Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me. I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them."

As believers and disciples of Jesus, we are members (by his grace) of his One, Holy, Universal and Apostolic Christian Church, and we are the beneficiaries of his wonderful High Priestly prayer in John 17. So if Christ, the Lord of Life, desires unity between the denominational branches of his Christian Church, then it will ultimately be made manifest. The common thread for all the branches of the Christian Faith is that we all look to Yeshua Ha-Mashiach (Jesus Christ) as our Savior and Lord, and as we are now well within the Third Millennium of the Redemption in Christ, we are living in exciting times for the prospect of greater Christian unity. We live in a time when Lutherans and Catholics will commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017 with joint worship services, guided by a document jointly published by The Lutheran World Federation and The Vatican entitled "From Conflict to Communion." We live in a time when the Pope has publically apologized for the mistreatment of non-Catholic Christians (including Protestants). We live in a time when the Greek Orthodox Christians and Egyptian Coptic Christians are in dialogue with one another. We live in a time when all the Eastern Orthodox Churches will meet this coming June of 2016 on the Island of Crete for a pan-Orthodox meeting called The Holy and Great Synod of the Orthodox Church. We live in a time when Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain has just published a book in honor of her 90th birthday entitled "The Servant Queen and the King She Serves" in which she is very affirming of other faiths but she is quite clear that she is a Christian and she talks openly and naturally about her faith in Jesus. We also live in a time when there is a growing resurgence of Judeo-Christians (Jews who believe in Jesus as their Divine Messiah, Savior and Lord) who refer to themselves as Messianic Jews. Lastly, we live in a time when a Third Ecumenical Council of Nicaea is scheduled for 2025, at which all three primary branches of the Christian Faith (Catholic and Orthodox and Protestant) will meet and discuss together about Christian life and faith. And by the way, it's important to note that the Second Ecumenical Council of Nicaea was in 787 AD and the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (at which the Nicene Creed was drafted and Christians like Saint Nicholas were present) was in 325 AD. So, a Third Council of the global Christian Church in 2025 in Nicaea, Turkey, is very momentous. Yes, we live in exciting times for Christian Church unity, but we must be clear that greater Christian unity does not mean Christian uniformity and conformity. True unity does not mean uniformity, but it does mean basic unity and fellowship centered upon our shared Trinitarian belief in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit — One Holy Trinity in Unity and One Holy Unity in Trinity. Of course, there is going to be some non-core issues that we disagree about, but we can continue to journey together as fellow believers and disciples of Jesus Christ and try to

THE THREE DAYS (TRIDUUM) (One worship service in three parts over three days)

Maundy Thursday (Triduum Part I)

March 24—7:00 PM

The word “Maundy” means mandate or commandment, and it refers to the Love Commandment of

Jesus Christ. Consequently, the Maundy Thursday worship service centers on three significant

things. First, the Church hears Jesus' command to love one another as he loves us (sometimes

illustrated by a ritual foot washing). Second, we celebrate the meal of eternal deliverance, taking

our place at the holy supper Jesus shared with his disciples on the night in which he was betrayed.

Third, at the end of the service, the lights are dimmed and the altar is stripped bare while Psalm

22 is read, foreshadowing the commemoration of the crucifixion of our Lord on Good Friday.

Good Friday (Triduum Part 2)

March 25—7:00 PM

This day is the second part of the Liturgy of The Three Days, which extends from Maundy Thursday

through the Easter Vigil on Saturday night. As the Church gathers to remember the suffering and

death of Jesus on this day, the altar is dressed in black, and we focus on the significance of the

sacrificial love that Jesus showed us upon the cross of Calvary.

Easter Vigil (Triduum Part 3)

Saturday, March 26—7:30 PM

On the night before Easter morning, Christians around the world gather to celebrate Christ’s

passage from darkness to light, from death to life. This Easter Vigil service is the other candlelight

service of the Church calendar. This special Holy Week service includes strong signs: a new fire in

darkness, light spreading from the light of Christ, the water and Word of baptism, and the first

resurrection meal. It also includes powerful words: the great stories of salvation from the Holy Bible

and the first Gospel reading for Easter. As the altar is changed from the black of Good Friday to

the white and gold of Easter, we keep this wondrous night of the resurrection in a spirit of joy. Our

handheld candles and our inner spiritual lamps are lit, as we begin our Easter celebration. Alleluia!

Christ is risen! And Christ will return!

ADORATION EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH

learn from each other's traditions. For instance, regarding Mary the Mother of our Lord, the Eastern Orthodox Christians might say that Catholics do too much with her (Marian Maximalism) while Protestants do too little with her (Marian Minimalism). Maybe they're right on the mark with the role of Mary, and maybe both Catholics and Protestants are missing the mark by going too far either way? And regarding the Jewish roots of our Christian Faith, we can learn from our Messianic Jewish brethren. And, of course, we Lutherans offer the other Christian branches the importance of keeping the GRACE of God always FIRST AND FOREMOST within our Christian theology and spirituality. As we look toward celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday, let us commit ourselves to an ecumenical spirit and to always seek out ways to manifest the Christian Church unity that our Lord Jesus prayed for and desires for us. After all, whether Catholic or Orthodox or Protestant, we all share together "one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism" (Ephesians 4:5) in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever. Amen. Grace & Peace, Pastor Tim

4 ETCETERA …Our Mission Continues

Here are some of the items discussed at the February Church Council meeting:

New members will be received Sunday, February 21, and Wednesday, February 24, during worship.

Larry Schultz said the plowing seems to be going well. Salting is costly as we pay by the pound. George Becker is

working to prioritize the repair/work to-be-done list he presented at the January, 2016, Council meeting. Larry had

previously informed the Council of many of those items with the work being scheduled to begin in March.

Easter program, “The Tale of the Three Trees,” will be presented by the Sunday School children on March 13.

Sharon Anderson reported that the Evangelism Committee has planned 2016 events. Our Rummage Sale is being held

the second week in June, the Cookie Sale on December 17, with additional emphasis on the Adopt-A-Highway event.

Sharon Anderson reported a healthy surplus of $2,357.41 was recorded for the month of January.

Jim Haas reported that sadly Sandy Ringwall will be stepping down as chair of the Partnership Committee after serving

in this position for many years. Hilary Singleton will be in charge of the book sale.

Sue Clark reported that she is getting donations ready to be delivered to Repairers of the Breach.

Pajama pancake breakfast to be sponsored by the youth on Sunday, February 14, with proceeds going to purchase a

new Christmas tree for our sanctuary.

Bob Yersin shared the cleaning review team input report. This will be worked on in the near future with chairpersons/

liaisons of individual committees being asked to clear/clean their specific areas.

Lori Hamilton, Carol Langhoff, Kathy Wakefield, Bob Yersin and Pastor Tim submitted a plan for Council consideration

to email newsletters instead of snail mailing all of them. Sixty hard copies would be printed with balance being sent

electronically. After discussion, Chris Dudzik moved, seconded by Pastor Tim, that we implement this request for a period of three issues. Motion carried. Pastor will announce this.

Bill Wakefield will be in charge of signing up volunteers to usher. Thank you Bill.

For more information on any or all of these items, please check the complete Council minutes

posted on the kiosk in the Gathering Space or contact one of your Council representatives.

Easter Egg Hunt Easter Morning

We will be holding an Easter Egg Hunt for the children at 8:15 AM. The hunt will be held after Easter Breakfast. Come and join us for FUN and FELLOWSHIP!

MERU DAY OF PRAYER

On Sunday, April 10, we will be joining our brothers and sisters in the Diocese of Meru for a day of mutual prayer. Our faith tells us that we are one in Spirit and that we worship one God and Savior. The Easter Season reminds us that Christ redeemed all those who believe and are baptized. It is a fitting time to hold up these partners in the faith. Theirs is a vibrant faith expressing itself in lively worship and congregational life. Pastor Tim will bless our partner-ship this day and a special offering will take place following the blessing. All proceeds will be donated to Mulala. Keep our global partners in prayer and support them through your prayers, your financial gifts, and Mt. Meru coffee. Asante sana! (Thank you!)

BOOK SALE FOR MULALA

Please begin to set aside books that you would like to donate to our Book Sale. This sale will be held the same dates as our Annual Rummage Sale. June 9, 10 & 11. Your generous donations of books will make this sale a success! We are also looking for volunteers to help with setting up for the sale, help during the sale, and cleaning up after the sale. Those interested should see or call Hilary Singleton (414-465-9394). Thank you for supporting our Tanzania partnership.

MERU AND MULALA

Look around our church on any given Sunday except for Christmas and Easter and you can't help but notice a lot of empty pews. At the Meru meeting on Saturday, we learned that they just ordained 6 new Pastors and now are splitting up Parishes that have many multiple preaching points so one pastor does not have 5 or even 6 congregations he must be responsible for. New churches are being built and many do not have American partners. We have created a fund called the Epiphany Fund that will be used by the Diocese to help these congregations who have no partners. If you would like to contribute to this fund, please put Epiphany Fund in the memo line. In addition, you almost never see empty pews in Meru churches and people have to walk there in the rain, the cold and the dusty roads in their summer. Their choirs have many members, all who are willing to come to practice and they sing like angels. Some of our partnerships have failed too, Good Shepherd in Brookfield, and Bethel in Muskego to mention a few. Bethel is down to 35 members and may close soon. A number of churches in Racine are close to merging or closing, yet the fastest growing Lutheran church in the world is in Tanzania. Why is that?? I believe that it is their powerful strength in praising God, having devotions in their homes, and thanking God for the little they have. We have so much more, yet we take it for granted and many people pray only when there is a crisis in their lives, there is no praising God. Bethyl had a partnership that was unique, as it was with Leguruki, a training school for boys and girls to learn basic things like brick making, auto repairs, electricity and other essential manual hands on skills. We are really trying to replace that partnership. WE need to fill our pews on Sunday mornings. Sure it is a little cold, but we have cars, the Packer game was often on at noon, but we need to make room in our hearts for church. Start your week off with a song of praise, words of God in the sermon and a blessing for the rest of the week. It is amazing that people in a Third World Country know what is really important, while we in America, put in "on the back burner". We don't want our churches to die, so come on Sunday and praise God with us. Amen. ~Sandy Ringwall
