MEMBER SERVICES Ann Thompson—386‐658‐5400

If you will be away from the Village for the summer, please be sure to let the IC know your departure and return plans, and a way you can be reached. This is a request for the en re summer or even short overnight trips. Speaking of summer, let Member Services know if you have ideas for trips or ac vi es you would like us to plan for the coming months. If this is your first summer here at ACV, please know that we have plenty going on; so share your ideas and watch the FNN for news of upcoming programs and events. I know the Gainesville Pop’s Concert is always a special treat, so check the ar cle and mark your calendar for Saturday, May 26. We are making plans to salute the June birthday members on Tuesday, June 12 at 3:00 p.m.

MEMBER SERVICES TIP OF THE WEEK The Banquet Planning Commi ee is looking forward to seeing you at the dinner on Thursday evening and offers the following helpful hint to assist with sea ng for the dinner. POLK CERAMICS SHOP We are delighted to share the fun and crea vity of ceramics each Monday a ernoon from 2:00 p.m. un l 5:00 p.m. Recently two ladies, both quite new to the Village, declared that it was just a fun place to be. Others have used words like “fellowship,” and “friendly.” I wonder how you would describe it; why not come on over and visit us? For some me, the ceramics shop has had several folk working on Wednesday mornings on items designated either for sale at Village shops or for gi giving through the annual Live Oak Fireman’s program for needy families. If you are somewhat experienced at ceramics pain ng and would like to join us on Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., stop by and visit the shop, or you may phone Laura Putnam at her home phone, 658‐3156 to talk further about it. Thank you for all the ways you help support the Village through various arts and volunteerism. Summer me will soon be upon us, and we are planning for a couple of new programs; keep your eyes on the FNN column of Polk Ceramics Shop to see what may be coming up in June and July.

Jamie is a Housekeeping Specialist for the Conference and Retreat Center here at Advent Chris an Village at the Village Lodge. She has dedicated 10‐plus years of service to the Village Lodge.  VOLUNTEER SERVICES

Eleanore Catarious—386‐658‐5251 A very interes ng and inspiring idea appeared in the May issue of Woman's Day magazine tled “Be Kind Every Day.” One of the sugges ons was to compliment three different friends and tell them what great people they are. That should not be a difficult task, especially here in ACV. Why not give it a try? In addi on to being kind every day, the following ar cle comes under the heading of “Li le Things Mean A Lot” and was penned by Florence Barr, volunteer. “One recent Wednesday as I was volunteering at the Rus c Shop, I had need of a large safety pin. I asked the manager if we had any, and she took me where they were to be found. As she removed a plas c container from a shelf, she said that we have to do something with all these pins. I said that I would package them for sale. So, for the next 3‐1/2 hours I carefully sorted and packaged the approximately 350 pins into small packages for sale. The very next morning a lady came into the store and picked up several packages of pins. When she came to pay for them, she asked the clerk if it was okay to take more of the packages. In fact, she wanted to purchase them all! The clerk on duty told her that she may have all of them. As it turned out, the lady’s church packed useful and needful items for the poor countries overseas, and they included such items as pins. So what was a menial task for me, God turned into a

blessing for me and others.” Thank you, Florence, for sharing that, and if there are other heartwarming stories that you would like to share with everyone, please do so. Several ladies have come to the rescue by agreeing to cut out 8” x 8” squares of padding for the Pot Holder Ministry. They are: Janice Harris, June Houston, Mar   Lewis, Dot Shuman, and Vickie Valderrama. Thank you very much for dona ng your

me to this project. The Sunshine Commi ee is pleased to add Julie Pries to our list of volunteers who visit with the guests at GSC and DM on their birthdays delivering best wishes, a gi , and a song by the "singing birthday bear." Julie’s mother is a guest at GSC, and this is Julie’s way of giving back to the Village. All blue Monthly Volunteer Hours Reports should be in my office in order for the tallying of these hours to begin. Thank you for your coopera on in this important endeavor.   "I cannot even imagine where I would be today were it not for that handful of friends who have given me a heart full of joy.  Let’s face it, friends make life a lot more fun." ‐ Charles R. NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

BUTTERFIELD ACRES Brenda Reas, Reporter

We wish a happy birthday to Robert Wheeler on the 18th! My friend says to me, "What rhymes with orange?" I said, "No it doesn't." Please send news to [email protected] or call 386‐658‐3044.

DACIER MANOR Beth Smith, Reporter

My SHOUT OUT this week is to Dacier Manor’s Weekend Supervisor, Renee Pope, and the weekend staff for making Mother’s Day so PERFECT for our ladies! With extra guests at lunch me, the staff all worked together to make accommoda ons with Food Service and the meal was delicious. Pictures of family members joining their mothers were wonderful! Thank you to Renee and the weekend staff for your hard work to make everything so nice and enjoyable… every weekend! Exercise Class and Bingo were the hot items for Monday. On Tuesday the men enjoyed French crème horns and pecan swirls at Men’s Coffee Hour and then all enjoyed Root Beer Floats in the a ernoon. Don and Joanne Mo shared a DVD on Wednesday morning during “Arm Chair Travelers” ‐ Discoveries…Ireland! More on that in next week’s ar cle. We are having our members sign up for the Annual Membership Banquet on Thursday evening and we are up to 11 already! Now that is AWESOME! This Saturday, May 19, Armed Forces Day, we will be honoring and recognizing our Dacier Manor Veterans with the help of Don Mo and Ellis Gray hos ng the presenta on. The Barre Masonic Lodge

and American Legion will also be par cipa ng. We have limited space, but if you are good friends with Chet Carlson, Myrl Ellis, Dr. Fred Mickler, Ed Siergiej, Wayne Spradley, Earl VanAmburg, and Lew Walters, please come to the Dacier Manor dining room at 10:00 a.m. Next week it is Happy Birthday to Be y Buick on May 21, and to Marjorie Hoffman on May 23. Joan Wi man has organized a 102nd Birthday Recep on for Marjorie Hoffman on May 23 at 2:30 p.m. Please come and help us celebrate this milestone and hear Marjorie and Joan play songs together on the piano!

EDGEWOOD TERRACE Dick Barkley, Reporter

Many thanks to Joyce Comerford  for filling this space for the past couple of weeks while I was sidelined by hip replacement surgery. Several of our neighbors enjoyed visits by children and grandchildren on Mother’s Day. So many in fact that I will not a empt to men on some without men oning others of which I do not have knowledge. I will note one in par cular, however, as Mary Carter was delighted to have daughter Marilyn come from Sea le to also celebrate Mary’s 96th birthday over the past weekend. It was great to see Mary recognized as a choir member at the Sun. service at the VC. Several ET residents would surely appreciate our con nual prayers as they recover from various physical ailments, so please remember Bob Comerford,  Rosemary  Pa erson,  Pete  Andres,  Lucy Hine, and Lena Wood.   Wri ng this report just two hours before the FNN’s noon Tue. deadline, I am looking forward to our annual ET spring picnic this a ernoon when I again will stuff myself to a couple of hours of miserableness. I have already prepared my world‐famous...well, maybe not world but regional America‐famous pimento cheese sandwiches. Really, I have had visitors from NC to ask if there is some way I can ship some to them from me‐to‐ me. I am so looking forward to consuming wife Clara’s fruit salad, Lee  Dean’s green beans, Jacki Lloyd’s chicken cacciatore, and Ruth Sawyer’s mac & cheese. Also, chocolate bread by Thelma Swing, dip by Dick McClaine, pineapple cake by Alice Rumbaugh, and many other delicacies which will spread across the tables from the kitchens of all 49 ET members who have signed up to a end. Praise the Lord for this week’s rain!

PARK OF THE PINES Bob Reynolds, Reporter

When we look at the calendar and the month is actually the correct one showing, do you ever think that me is going too fast? How about the one that finds the previous month s ll displayed and panics to turn the page? Now he has to start somewhere in the middle and realizes that me is so much faster than he thought. Think about it. It happens to me all the

me. Why do we even put the calendars in sight? Who needs panic?

I took some pictures of the Koi pond adjacent to Dacier Manor Sunday a ernoon and it was like the Sahara Desert. I’m not concerned about the dryness, but where did the fish go? Hopefully they are very comfortable in their temporary home. One day they will be back, but un l then, don’t throw bread crumbs into the desert. The children’s program on Sunday night was wonderful and they seemed to have enjoyed it as much as the audience did. Isn’t youth enthusias c? When did it leave us? Maybe it is in a different format and we haven’t no ced it yet. Next week I get to publish an upcoming birthday announcement, but not this week. And again, there are anniversaries out there, but not here in POP. ONLY IN AMERICA… are there handicapped parking places in front of a ska ng rink. ...Do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries and a diet coke. ...Do banks leave both doors open and chain their pens to the counter. ...Do we leave our cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and store useless junk in the garage. ...Do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight. I have a few words le so I’ll include a few more oxymorons: ex nct life, taped live, plas c glasses, temporary tax relief, terribly pleased, ght slacks, pre y ugly, and exact es mate. An added feature for you – you know you are over the hill when one of the throw pillows on your bed is a hot water bo le. See you next week with some good news!

SPECIAL FEATURES

ARTIST SERIES By Dick Grillo

The concluding performance of this season’s Ar st Series was, for me, exci ng and excep onal. Exci ng because our guest performers were coming here for the first me filling in for the Merling Trio who had been highly applauded by cri cs as one of the best trios in recent years. I was, however, reassured by faculty friends at Florida State University that the last minute subs tute performers (Corinne S llwell, Marisa Votapek and Minji Nam) would not disappoint, and they did not. Your enthusias c response and applause reflected your approval. Thank you to friends, advocates of the arts, and community supporters for making our 30th season excep onal.
