n August 26, NASA Administrator SeanO'Keefe received the report of theColumbia Accident Investigation Board(CAIB) from the chairman, retired U.S.Navy Admiral Harold Gehman. The fol-lowing is a statement from the NASAAdministrator regarding the CAIB report.

"On the day of the Columbia tragedy,NASA committed to the families ofSTS–107's crew that we would find theproblems that caused this horrible acci-dent, fix them, and return to theexploration objectives their loved onesdedicated their lives to. First African-American in spacemarks 20th anniversary

orty-five years ago this week, the34th President of the United States,Dwight Eisenhower, signed into lawthe "National Aeronautics and SpaceAct of 1958," (Public Law 85–568),which created this historic agency.

Since that time, NASA has accom-plished many great scientific and tech-nological feats in air and space. TheAgency has been adapted for manynonaerospace uses by the private sec-tor and remains a leading force inscientific research and in stimulatingpublic interest in aerospace explora-tion. NASA's exploration of space hastaught us to view the Earth, ourselves,and the universe in a new way. Whilethe tremendous technical and scien-tific accomplishments of NASA dem-onstrate vividly that humans canachieve previously inconceivablefeats, we also are humbled by therealization that Earth is just a tiny"blue marble" in the cosmos.

Every member of the NASA family isencouraged to recognize and reflecton this important milestone. For 45years the people of NASA have dedi-cated their lives and efforts to thepursuit of NASA's original mandate:Activities in space should be devotedto "peaceful purposes for the benefitof all mankind." �

A lthough it was20 years ago, Dr.Guion S. "Guy"Bluford has vividmemories of hishistoric flightaboard STS–8Challenger. It wasthe first spaceshuttle launchand landing at

night and the first time an African-American flew into space.

With the cockpit dark, Bluford recalled,". . . the clock counted down, and Challengerlifted off. I just laughed, it was so muchfun," he said. Over the next 6 days, Blufordand the crew deployed a multipurposeIndian satellite, operated the Canadian-built Remote Manipulator System and a

dministrator Sean O'Keefe announcedthe selection of veteran astronaut, as-tronomer, and astrophysicist Dr. John M.Grunsfeld as the Agency's new chiefscientist at NASA Headquarters. Hesucceeds Dr. Shannon Lucid, who willreturn to the NASA Johnson to assist theAgency's Return to Flight efforts.

Grunsfeld, a veteran of four space shuttle flights, played an integral role in two spaceshuttle servicing missions to the Hubble Space Telescope. A native of Chicago,Grunsfeld has studied astronomy and physics throughout his career. He earned abachelor's degree in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1980and a master's degree and a doctorate in physics from the University of Chicago in 1984and 1988, respectively.

As NASA's chief scientist, Grunsfeld will work to ensure the scientific merit of theAgency's programs. "John has a deep interest in astronautical science and has thehands-on experience to back up what he has taught in the classroom," said Adminis-trator O'Keefe. "With his background in physics and astronomy, John is a naturalselection to direct NASA's important space-based science objectives."

The Administrator noted appreciation for Lucid's leadership and work with Mary Kicza,assistant administrator for Biological and Physical Research, in developing a compre-hensive plan for prioritization of research onboard the International Space Station.Lucid also updated NASA's science policy, which had not been done since 1996. Thepolicy stipulates that science grants will be peer reviewed, and NASA scientists mustcompete for research funding. �

Bluford said his goal was never to be thefirst African-American in space. "I recog-nized the importance of it, but I didn'twant to be a distraction for my crew,"Bluford said. "I felt I had to do the bestjob I could for people like the TuskegeeAirmen, who paved the way for me, butalso to give other people the opportunityto follow in my footsteps."

A veteran of four space flights, Blufordretired from NASA in July 1993. In thelast 10 years he has managed the con-tracts of several companies supportingGlenn's microgravity research andtechnical development activities. He is

currently president of the AeroSpaceTechnology Group, a business consultingorganization specializing in aviation andspace-related technology development.

In addition to his affiliation with numer-ous professional organizations, Blufordalso serves on the Board of Directors ofthe Western Reserve Historical Society,the Great Lakes Science Center, and theNational Inventors Hall of Fame Founda-tion. He has frequently lent his supportto NASA Glenn educational programsand given inspirational talks for variousevents throughout the Cleveland metro-politan area. �

s I look back over the last 9 plus yearsas director of Lewis Research Center andnow Glenn Research Center at LewisField, it seems like only yesterday when Ileft Washington to come to Cleveland.The most fulfilling experience has beenassociation with people who workvery hard to make this one of the bestCenters in the Agency. The dedicationand commitment of personnel to themission, vision, and core values of theCenter has been the foundation for all ofour achievements. Memories of myassociation with all of you willremain with me forever. Myprime objective throughoutmy tenure has been the wel-fare of the workforce. My goalhas been to continue to haveat least 3500 employees comethrough the gates every dayto do meaningful researchand technology developmentfor NASA. I am very proud ofeach and every one of you.

While at Glenn, I have seenthis Center make great strides in propul-sion and power technology for aeronau-tics, aerospace, and space applications.Our gas turbine engine propulsion tech-

nologies, which were the foundation forthe creation of the Center, have resultedin significant advancements in engine

leveland's own Dr. Donald A. Thomas has become the newInternational Space Station program scientist for NASA. Thomassucceeds Neal Pellis, who became associate director, BiologicalSciences and Applications Office at NASA Johnson.

Based at Johnson, Thomas will work with principal investigators andthe station program office to ensure scientific and engineeringrequirements are clearly communicated among all participants andto the general public.

"Don has a unique and very diverse background, which makes him an excellent choicefor this position," said Mary Kicza, associate administrator for the Office of Biologicaland Physical Research at NASA Headquarters. "His experiences as a materials scienceresearcher in industry prior to joining NASA and his scientific and managementaccomplishments since becoming an astronaut will serve the Space Station Programextremely well, as we optimize the available research opportunities and move forwardtoward assembly and completion of the station." �

s Administrator O'Keefe has pledged,we will not only implement the ColumbiaAccident Investigation Board's (CAIB) rec-ommendations to the best of our ability,but we will also seek ways to set the bareven higher as we emerge from theColumbia accident as a safer, strongerand smarter Agency.

To do this, the "NASA ImplementationPlan for Return to Flight and Beyond"outlines the path that NASA will take inimplementing and building upon theCAIB's recommendations. The plan willalso address the activities necessary tosustain safe flight operations for as longas the space shuttle's unique capabilitiesare needed in the future. Both the CAIBreport and the Implementation Plan canbe found on the NASA Web site athttp://www.nasa.gov. Our Plan is notsome kind of sacred text whose words areset in stone. It is a 'living document' thatwill be continually updated to reflectyour good ideas for how we may bestaccomplish our return to flight goals, aswell as to record our tangible progresstoward safe return to flight.

Air show extravaganza

Team NASA recently participated in the 2003 Cleveland American HeartWalk. This year, approximately 20 team members (civil servants and supportservice contractors) raised a total of $2,311.50 for heart disease and stroke.This helped contribute to the $223,853 that the greater Cleveland area raisedfor the American Heart Association. Team NASA came in 11th out of 98teams in the Heart Walk. The Cleveland National Air Show, NASA Glenn, and presenting sponsor ParkerHannifin Corporation presented the 2003 Centennial of Powered Flight Gala at theRenaissance Cleveland Hotel on August 29. John Stossel of ABC-TV hosted theprestigious event. The two keynote speakers were Astronaut Jim Lovell and former

NASA Flight Director GeneKranz, both of Apollo 13 fame.They remained in Cleveland forthe air show, which took placefrom August 30 to September 1at Burke Lakefront Airport.Glenn played a major role in theproceedings with former CenterDirector Larry Ross (1990 to 1993)who was air show chairman.

From August 31 to September 5, Glenn hosted prestigious guests atthe Sixteenth International Symposium on Air Breathing Engines(XVI ISABE) at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. The event wel-comed aviation scholars and business leaders from around theworld. Twenty-six countries were represented and over 350 parti-cipants shared the history of and future vision for air-breathingengines. performance, noise, and emissions tech-nology, and a reputation in the nationaland international propulsion communityas a leader in civil aircraft propulsion. Wehave made significant progress in ad-vanced material and structures technol-ogy to make engine componentsstronger, lighter in weight, and able towithstand high temperatures, resultingin more fuel-efficient aircraft.

The Deep Space I satellite was poweredby a Glenn-developed ion engine. Theengine was originally conceived at theCenter in the 1960s, and diligent effortsbrought this innovative tech-nology tomaturity from a prototype on the testbench to a fully operational system. TheAdvanced Communications TechnologySatellite, for example, demonstrated thatwe are fully capable of taking a technol-ogy program from concept to fully op-erational hardware. Icing research atGlenn is world class, and other aeronau-tics safety efforts at the Center have madeaviation safer. We also have a long his-tory of successful microgravity flight ac-tivities. This is only a thumbnail sketchof the numerous success stories of thisCenter.

I am grateful to all the people who workbehind the scenes in the test cells, mak-ing sure these top notch facilities areoperational and in excellent condition atthe Cleveland campus and Plum BrookStation. Without you, we could not havemet our commitments to our manyinternal and external customers. Also,the Center's other support organizationshave been vital in helping us accomplishour mission as well, and I am gratefulfor your contributions.

Also, I am extremely proud of the re-wards and recognitions this Center hasearned. Glenn continues to lead theAgency in the number of R&D 100 andTurning Goals Into Reality awards.Awards such as these reaffirm that ourefforts are valued both inside andoutside of NASA.

This past decade has been one ofchange, and I anticipate the next decadewill bring even more. For us to remaincritical and relevant, we must acceptthat the Agency will continue to evolve.The Center has to beproactively prepared tomeet the needs of NASAand the Nation's aero-nautics and space initia-tives and goals with em-phasis on Return to Flight.In the future, our aero-nautics program can de-velop the propulsiontechnology to powersupersonic civil aircraft,and microgravity pro-grams that will evolveinto bioscience and bio-engineering. The space nuclear powerand propulsion programs are the key forrobotic and human space flight to theouter planets. And last but not least,continued development of the Glennworkforce will be important to meetthese future challenges.

As stated above, during mytenure I have gotten to knowmany of you personally andhave enjoyed working witheach and every one of you.Please know that I will alwayshave fond memories of thegood people of this Centerand of your outstandingcontributions.

I am confident that Glenn Research Cen-ter is in good hands under the capableleadership of Dr. Julian Earls. Julian iscommitted to the Agency, and I know hewill have a positive impact on the Center.

Glenn's Wright connection

lenn employees may not be aware that Orville Wright was a guest here at the 1943dedication of NASA Glenn's predecessor—Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory (AERL),only 40 years after the Wright Brothers' first successful airplane flight at Kitty Hawk, NC.

According to historical accounts, this was the first time that members of the NationalAdvisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) visited the Cleveland laboratory. Wright wasa NACA member from 1920 to 1948. In addition to participation in the dedicationceremony, Wright and other distinguished guests met with AERL Manager Edward Sharpand toured six major facilities within the laboratory.

In the May 21, 1943, edition of the AERL's newsletter, Wing Tips, Wright expressedhis support of the laboratory. In the newsletter article, Wright was described as agracious and friendly person, who, though "elderly now," was still very much in tunewith progress in aviation.

When asked what the Cleveland facility meant to him, Wright said, "I am most interestedin the laboratory. The work you are doing is important—vitally important. There is a greatneed for improvement of motors—which can only be accomplished by working outexperiments. It calls for exact mathematical formulas and scientific study."

Later that year, Wright returned to the laboratory when the National Inventors' Council metto discuss the best inventions and ideas submitted during the past month toward thewar effort. Wing Tips reported that Wright was "very impressed with the develop-ments being carried to completion at AERL." When asked about the helicopter, hesaid that he believed it "was slated to advance to outstanding usefulness."

While archival records do not indicate how many times Wright visited the Clevelandlaboratory, retiree Irene Guy, who served in the Executive Engineer's Office andlater as Sharp's secretary, recalled that Wright visited the lab at least once a yearfor NACA meetings.

It is evident that Wright's support and presence were a great inspiration to thisCenter's founders. �

Furnas linked to"first passenger"

fter nearly a year of activitiescommemorating the Centennial of Flight,most people know that the WrightBrothers were responsible for the firstpowered, piloted airplane flight. But whatabout the first airplane passenger? Thatdistinction is proudly preserved in thehistory books under the name of CharlesW. Furnas, a distant cousin to RandallFurnas, Glenn's Director of Engineeringand Technical Services.

"Charley and my father were secondcousins—their grandfathers werebrothers," Furnas explained. "I learnedabout Charley 20 years ago, after myfather became interested in the Furnasfamily genealogy and shared informationhe recalled from his youth and from oldnewspapers he had saved."

From published accounts of Charley's life,his return to Dayton in 1908 proved to bethe opportunity of a lifetime—for all.

Charley had been a machinist mate in theNavy and in January 1908 took a job in amachine shop within walking distance ofthe Wright Brothers' bicycle shop. Most ofCharley's spare time was spent doing oddjobs at the Wrights' shop in hopes ofconvincing them to teach him how to fly.This was 1 month before the WrightBrothers won a bid submitted to the U.S.War Department under Specification No.

Well-wishes for Whitlow

NEXT system integrated at Glenn

components of a next-generation ion propulsion system. The NEXT system falls withinthe NASA In-Space Propulsion Technology Program, which is managed by MarshallSpace Flight Center.

The system consists of three main components: engineering model thrusters, a bread-board propellant management system, and a breadboard power processing unit.

"While the two breadboard units were constructed offsite by Boeing and Aerojet, thethrusters were designed and built in-house at Glenn," said Project Manager ScottBenson, Space Flight Project Branch. "The entire system was integrated at Glenn."

Benson explained that the Glenn technology team, led by Michael Patterson, OnboardPropulsion Branch, met all the Phase 1 objectives to build, demonstrate, and evaluatethe technology.

This validated system technology enables the project to move forward into Phase II,which will advance the NEXT ion propulsion system technology to the next level ofmaturity through increasingly complex design, fabrication, and testing. Phase II isplanned for a duration of 2 1/2 years, with a total award of over $20 million.

"The concerted efforts of engineers and technicians from 5000, 6000, 7000, and 8000directorates provided the foundation for our Phase I accomplishments," Benson said. �

486, for a "heavier-than-air flying machine"able to carry two men. This design re-quired considerable work and adaptationof their 1905 Flyer to their new Flyer Aconfiguration. The brothers were also undercontract to deliver another plane to a Frenchbusiness group, La Compagnie General deNavigation Aerienne, which plannedto manufacture and sell Wright Aircraft.

Pinched for time to meet the two flightdemonstration deadlines, the Wrights seizedthe opportunity to hire this energeticyoung man as a part-time assistant to CharlesTaylor their full-time mechanic. Then, toget away from distractions, and regaintheir flying skills, the Wrights decided toship their Flyer to Kitty Hawk in April 1908.Furnas followed his dream and the WrightBrothers to Kitty Hawk to help rebuildthe neglected test camp, even though theWright Brothers were on a tight budgetand couldn't afford to pay his travel.

On May 14, after numerous runs, Orvilledecided "it was time to replace the bag-of-sand passenger with a real one," Furnasexplained. "Because they were concernedthe engine might overheat under theweight of two people if allowed to run along time, they offered the passenger seatto Charley who could also monitor theengine. So, Wilbur operated the airplane andCharley operated the engine, making himnot only the world's first airplane passenger,but also the world's first flight engineer."

Charley's contributions to flight werememorialized on a 6-cent air mail en-velope issued by the U.S. Post Office inMay 15, 1938, and more recently on aplaque to be placed along the NationalAviation and Space Exploration Wall ofHonor leading to the National Air andSpace Museum, Udvar-Hazy Center, atDulles International Airport.

While Furnas has been a longtime model-rocket-building enthusiast, he says that henever had aspirations to be a pilot, eventhough his sister has her pilot's license andhis dad was a fighter pilot in World War II."Though my brief tenure as a researchengineer for Zero-G flights onboard theLear Jet was much safer than what Charleydid, I am confident that Charley wouldfind my career as a NASA engineer andmanager to be quite exciting as well." �

Crowds of well-wishers fromnear and far gathered at theVisitor Center to acknowl-edge Whitlow's contributions—as a colleague, a mentor, and a friend—duringhis 5-year tenure at Glenn.

Center Director Donald Campbell gave a heartfelt welcome speech, which wasfollowed by some fun-loving comments by Deputy Director Dr. Julian Earls,who served as the master of ceremonies. A series of presentations by NASApersonnel, industry and academic associates, and personal friends providedhumor and sentiment to the well-attended event.

In closing remarks, Whitlow thanked everyone who attended, along withspecial thanks to those who had been particularly important in his life. Theformer R&T director expressed the feelings that his achievements were dueless to what he knows, than to the talented people he knows who can get thework done. �

r. Jayanta Panda, Nozzle Branch, andDr. Richard Seasholtz, Optical Instrumen-tation Technology Branch, both membersof the Research and Technology Director-ate, have been awarded the 2003 GlennDistinguished Publication award. Theirpublication is entitled Experimental Investi-gation of Density Fluctuations in High SpeedJets and Correlation with Generated Noise.

One of the critical issues for supersonic transport is the high noise level produced byengine plume. The precise source of this noise is a debated subject primarily due to alack of reliable experimental data. In this work turbulent density fluctuations in modelsupersonic jets were measured using a novel Rayleigh scattering based technique,developed at Glenn. The turbulent fluctuations were then correlated with the emittednoise to determine the noise source. The results should lead to an enhanced under-standing of the fundamental physics of noise generation and mixing. They should alsoprovide aeroacoustics researchers more accurate and comprehensive experimentaldata to calibrate and validate their analytical and computational models. �

CFC 2003 campaign hopesto accomplish great things

ach year Federal employees and military personnel raise millions of dollarsthrough the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), which benefits thousands ofnonprofit charities. Last year, the NASA family at Glenn donated over $385, 000to the needs of many—in our city, nationally, and around the world.

This year's CFC theme is "When caring hearts meet willing hands, great thingsare accomplished." The campaign runs through October 31 and hopes to raise$362,000.

"The 2003 Glenn CFC committee would like to thank employees for yourgenerosity in the past and we look forward to your continued support in thisyear's campaign," said CFC Chairperson Robert Everett, Research Model Tech-nology Branch. "Your contributions mean meals for hungry children, relief forfamilies in need of counseling, further work on cures for diseases, comfort for thedying, environmental protection, and better lives and renewed hope for millionsin our global community."

Payroll deductions make it convenient for employees to give by enabling themto spread their contributions across the entire year. Contributions are taxdeductible and begin in January 2004.

Magazine grants awards to Glenn n independent judging panel and the editors of R&D Magazine

named six new products developed at Glenn among the top 100 most technologic-ally significant products introduced into the marketplace over the past year. Theseinnovations and the pioneering efforts of the inventors and collaborators will berecognized during the 41st annual R&D 100 Awards program on October 16 atChicago's Navy Pier.

� The Microgravity Analysis Software System (MASS), developed by a team fromGlenn's Microgravity Environment and Telescience Branch, operates on a continuousbasis to receive the various streams of acceleration data generated onboard theInternational Space Station. The data is processed, tested for validity, and used forcalculating meaningful data plots, which are posted to the Web in real time for users.MASS team members include NASA's Kevin McPherson and Ted Wright with KenHrovat, Eric Kelly, Gene Liberman, Nissim Lugasy, and Tim Reckart of Zin Technologies.

� A high-temperature solid lubricant composite that provides low friction and wear tosliding contacts operating from subambient to 1500 °F was developed and tested byGlenn's Dr. Christopher Dellacorte (5960) and Brian Edmonds (7410). Available as aplasma spray coating (PS300) or as a freestanding powder metallurgy product(PM300), these lubricant products have been fully commercialized for high-temperature steam valves and as bushings for furnace conveyors.

� Pilots can retrieve weather information using the WSI InFlight system, whichgraphically displays both radar and airport condition data on portable or panel-mounted displays in the cockpit. The prototype hardware and software wasdeveloped by ViGYAN, Inc. of Hampton, VA, as the Pilot Weather Advisor™ (PWA).Development of this product from the PWA into the WSI InFlight system was facili-tated under the NASA Small Business Innovation Research Program and advancedto production with the aid of Glenn Lindamood from Glenn's Engineering Designand Analysis Division and Center funding.

� A new thermosetting polyimide resin, DMBZ–15, jointly developed by Glenn'sDr. Kathy Chuang with Maverick Corporation of Blue Ash, OH, may extend the lifeof aircraft engine components, space transportation propulsion systems, missiles,and hot airframe structures. The new resin exhibits better wear resistance than state-of-the-art PMR–15 and enables the development of fiber-reinforced polymer matrixcomposites with capabilities for use at temperatures as high as 650 °F—an increase ofmore than 100 °F above the state-of-the-art composites.

� A fault-tolerant, high-temperature, high-load radialmagnetic bearing that incorporates such innovative fea-tures as a modular C-core stator construction, optimizedrotor/lamination assembly, and new coil winding andcore manufacturing approaches has resulted in theapplication for two patents. The new bearing hasdemonstrated a static 1000 lb force at 25,000 rpmor while operating fault-tolerant, at 1000 °F. The awardwinning bearing was developed by a team from Glenn's Structuresand Acoustics Division supported by the Army Office and theUniversity of Toledo including Gerald Montague (0300), AndrewProvenza, and Albert Kascak (0300), Mark Jansen (UNT), RalphJansen (UNT), and Ben Ebihara (UNT), a NASA retiree, as well asDr. Alan Palazzolo, from Texax A&M University.

� The Hybrid Anti-Icing System is thefirst new form of ice protection for air-craft in 40 years and the first systemcertified by the FAA that incorporates anelectromechanical deicer and uniquelycombines electrothermal anti-icing withelectromechanical deicing to protectroughness-sensitive airfoils. The newsystem operates at 25 percent of thepower of current systems while provid-ing the same level of safety for opera-tions in icing conditions. Glenn's DeanMiller and Andy Reehorst (5840) werecollaborators on the system that wasmanufactured by Cox & Company, NewYork, NY, and is a hybrid using thermalanti-icing and mechanical deicing tokeep wings and other lifting surfacesclear of ice. The system is currently inproduction for Raytheon Aircraft's newPremier I business jet. �

Godfrey "Art" Anzic, 66, an electronicsengineer in the Antenna, Microwave andOptical Systems Branch, suddenly diedafter suffering a cerebral hemorrhage.

Anzic joined NASA Lewis in 1963 andmade noteworthy contributionsthroughout the years. He wasinstrumental in the design anddevelopment of the first U.S. high-powersuper-high-frequency ground terminaland the successful completion of theUnited States-Russia Telemedicine SpaceBridge. He was also responsible for theinitial design of NASA's AdvancedCommunications Technology SatelliteGround Terminal. In recognition of hisoutstanding contributions to NASA,he was recently awarded NASA'sExceptional Service Medal.

Anzic graduated from John CarrollUniversity in 1960, where he receiveda bachelor of science degree in Physics/Electronics. Prior to coming to NASAGlenn, Anzic served with the U. S. Armyas a Communications Officer in Fort

Eustis, VA, andCamp Casey, Koreauntil 1962.

Anzic, was an ama-teur radio operatorknown by the callletters K8BVI andS57BA. He designedan antenna circuit forthe Shuttle Amateur Radio Experiment(SAREX). He also played a critical role inthe transmission and reception of the firstamateur television signals between Earthand the space shuttle in low Earth orbit.

William Harris, 77, who retired in 1944with 33 years of service, recently died.While at Glenn, he worked as a plumberand pipefitter.

Edward Myslinski, 81, who retired in 1970with 25 years of service, recently died.He worked as an electrician at PlumBrook Station and received the ApolloAchievement award for his services asa member of the team culminatingApollo II's successful landing.

But now, we're quite happy to be closer to my hometown,where my mother and one of my brothers and his family live.Favorite food: I love to experience different types of food, and tend to really enjoyseafood, Thai, and Mediterranean cuisines.Favorite music: I enjoy all types of music but usually listen to rock or jazz.Favorite movie or play: My favorite seems to change with every movie I see,but the classic Gone With the Wind still ranks high on my list. I also enjoysuspense thrillers.Activities when away from NASA: I spend a seemingly endless amount of timeon "kid" activities, from baseball to dance recitals, which I really enjoy. ene Kranz, leader of the "tiger team" offlight directors who brought the Apollo 13spacecraft safely back to Earth in 1970,addressed Glenn employees on August 29.A man who has truly lived his motto of"Failure is not an option," Kranz mesmer-ized a packed audience in the DEB audito-rium with his memories as a flight director.His candid descriptions—along with the phi-losophies he lives by—of the early days ofhis 47-year career with NASA, were bothinspiring and challenging to the Glennworkforce.

At a time when the Agency is recoveringfrom the Columbia tragedy, Kranz urgedthat employees need to "take personal re-sponsibility for the failure and go aboutmaking things right." He called for eachemployee to go out into the communityand become a "foot soldier of space,"spreading the word of NASA's value. "Withevery catastrophe comes opportunity," hesaid. "This is NASA's opportunity."

In nearby Parma, James A. Lovell, one ofthe astronauts who survived the fatefulApollo 13 mission, endured a less thanlife-threatening thunderstorm that delayeda park dedication ceremony in his honor.

Ward 4 Councilman Tim DeGeeter whodiscovered that Lovell was born inCleveland but raised on FarnsworthAvenue in Parma for a short time. Thismotivated DeGeeter and his supportersto claim one of America's heroes as theirown Hometown Hero and to securefunding for the Captain James A. Lovell,Jr., Park adjacent to John Muir ElementarySchool. Lovell, accompanied by his wife,

Marilyn, admitted to being overwhelmedby the gesture and outpour of admiringcitizens and local dignitaries who cameto witness the dedication. The veteran offour space flights also reminded theaudience that he wasn't selected asan astronaut candidate the first timehe applied. ". . . Just shows, if you reallywant to do something, you keep at it."

During the ceremony local artist BarbMatthes presented Lovell with a plaqueshe designed showing him on the Moon,the destination denied him by the ill-fatedApollo 13 mission. �
