We follow an equal opportunities employment policy. We are committed to recruiting, appointing and employing staff in accordance to all relevant legislation. We are proud that most of our staff have been members at Wizz kids for many years and we can therefore provide a mature and experienced team at all times.

educationand care. We receive all the latest information on relevant training opportunities. All training undertaken is with OFQUAL.

All our staff are trained in First Aid , which is updated every 3 years, have an Enhanced Police Check ( DBS ) when employed and are fully trained in Safeguarding issues.

EnvironmentOur rooms are organised in a way that the children can become familiar and confident in their surroundings. We have found that the sooner this happens, the quicker they settle and begin to enjoy nursery.

We organise the time the children are with us so that they can take part in a variety of child-chosen and adult-let activities. These take account of children’s changing energy levels throughout the day. The setting caters for the children’s individual needs for rest and quiet activities throughout the day.

They have free flow access to outside play areas. The children benefit greatly from free flow play and being able to mix with older or younger children so we have times when this is accommodated, always taking into account the safety needs of all children.

Our environment allows children to re visit activities and enhance on them at their own pace. It doesn’t rush children along but identifies when a child is ready to take further steps.

We plan activities based on the children’s interests and abilities and this is made possible by staff undertaking informative observations and understanding the importance of valuing the child within group time. We show the learning to the child but the child shows us the way.

This way all the children are learning and developing in the best possible way, a happy, confident way which will hopefully stay with them throughout their lives. There is more information about the Early Years Foundation Stage in the `WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN` brochure found in your starter pack.

Links with Totley PrimaryWizz Kids is positioned in the grounds of Totley Primary School. Although we are completely independent from the school, the excellent logistics mean we can give the children opportunities to learn about a school environment, whichever school they will attend. Please note attending Wizz Kids does not mean you will automatically be granted a place at Totley Primary and it will not influence any admission decision.

Starting School   Options By law a child must be in full-time education from the beginning of the term after their 5th birthday. For more information on how to register for starting school please visit the Council’s web site:- www.sheffield.gov.uk/education/information-for-parents-primary.

Parents do have some flexibility in deciding when their child will start reception. The options are as follows;  All 4 year old children can start in reception class in the September after their 4thbirthday. Parents may defer their child’s admission into reception until the January or April, depending on their date of birth. If you choose to defer, your child continues to be entitled to free early learning (15 hours per week term time or upto 30 hours for working parents) at a childcare provider of your choice.

Please speak to us if you wish to discuss your options further and please advise us when you have made your decision.

Record Keeping and Key Person SystemWe use a computer software system called TAPESTRY to compile and store all children’s learning journeys. TAPESTRY is completely secure and is used in many schools and early years settings. This system allows greater efficiency in both time and presentation. We download photos, assessments and observations onto each child’s learning journey. We can store text, videos, audio and photos to provide evidence on your child’s progress. When you are registered you will be asked to set up your own access code for TAPESTRY allowing you to securely view your child’s progress and learning.

4

Page 5: Address: Wizz Kids, Totley Primary School, Totley ...€¦  · Web viewSing and tell nursery rhymes. Talk about the numbers, colours, words and letters you see when you are out and

The way the system works should be explained to you on your settling in visits prior to starting nursery, but should you have any questions before, or after, please do not hesitate to contact us. You will be asked to fill the `About Me` page on your child`s profile which will allow us to gain vital insight into your child`s routines and hobbies. We ask all parents to add photos and details of any achievements their child makes at home or on outings as this helps provide a greater depth of knowledge and understanding for their key person.

Information gathered and inputted into the child’s learning journey does depend greatly on how often they attend Wizz Kids. A child who attends only two sessions per week will not have as many observations as a child who attends 5 sessions.

When a child also attends another child care provider we liaise once a term with them to gather their input on your child’s development.

If your child is coming to us from another provider they should supply you with a transition form please can you let us have a copy of this as soon as possible.

Our key person system gives each member of staff particular responsibility for just a few children within the group. You will be informed of your child’s key person on your first settling in visit. Each key person has a `buddy` to work alongside and help manage shift patterns.

Your child’s key person will work with you and any other childcare provider involved with your child, to collect information about your child’s needs, activities, interests and achievements, this will ensure we offer the appropriate learning opportunities to each child individually and how to help them move on to next steps confidently

When your child first starts Wizz Kids you will be asked to provide some photos of significant family members, friends, pets and favorite places etc. We have found that having this link with home really helps with the settling in process. We will ask you to add to these books with photos or comments on a frequent basis. (Don’t forget you can add photos to the TAPESTRY system)

For older children we do not send home daily written feedback sheets, unless specifically requested as we strongly feel that having a conversation about your child’s day with a member of staff is much more constructive, feedback sheets often become just a tick sheet. Please feel free to talk to us about your child’s time with us at any time. We do provide a home/nursery diary for children under 3.

As a mum or dad, how can you help with your child’s learning? All the fun activities that you do with your child at home are important in supporting their learning and development, and have a really long lasting effect on your child’s learning as they progress through school.

Even when your child is very young and is not yet able to talk, talking to them helps them to learn and understand new words and ideas. If you make the time every day to do some of the following things with your child it will make a real difference to your child’s confidence as a young learner.

Sing and tell nursery rhymes Talk about the numbers, colours, words and letters you see when you are out

and about Allow your child to cut out and stick pictures from magazines Cook/bake together On a trip to the supermarket, talk about all the different packaging shapes

5

Page 6: Address: Wizz Kids, Totley Primary School, Totley ...€¦  · Web viewSing and tell nursery rhymes. Talk about the numbers, colours, words and letters you see when you are out and

Plant seeds or bulbs in a pot or garden patch Talk to your child at every opportunity e.g what you are doing that day Share a book Explore the park at a different time of the year, go off the beaten track Use the weather, shadows, rain, puddles, snow, wind, mist and sun- to extend

your child’s vocabulary

If you're looking for new ideas for things to do then find out what is on offer at your local children’s centre. Many offer ‘messy play’ activities which you and your child can join in with, and many of the activities they provide are free. Staff can also give you advice about the kinds of books or other activities your child might enjoy at different ages.

Nappies and Toilet Training Nappies etc. must be supplied if your child is not yet toilet trained. This includes Nappy Rash Creams, Wet Wipes, Nappy Sacks as well as the nappies themselves. You may be asked to fill out a medication form for us to apply any nappy creams. Each child has a named box/drawer in which their supplies will be kept for their sole use. We will inform you you when any supplies need to be replenished. Please note there will be a charge of 50p per nappy if we have to use one from our stocks. We also charge 50 pence per day for baby wipes.

For children who are new to toilet training we offer support and advice and will operate various methods of encouragement to make this a positive development. If you require further information regarding toilet training please speak to a member of staff.

Sleep and rest zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzWe will gather information from you on your child’s sleep or rest needs and will endeavor to accommodate these where ever possible. We have a designated room in which children can obtain a sleep away from the main play areas. This room is equipped with cots and mattresses or cushions. To ensure good posture development, we do not recommend that children sleep in a buggy or car seat.

Sheets and blankets will be supplied by nursery for your child’s sole use. Alternatively, you can supply blankets which will be returned to you for laundering.

What to wearIn order to feel free to explore and experiment with all kinds of materials, including messy ones! it is best to send children dressed in clothes which are easily washable and not too new. Simple clothing which the children can handle themselves will enable them to go to the toilet when needed and to put on and take off their outdoor clothes, without being too dependent on others. It is good for children to practice the skills which will make them independent.

We do go outside a lot so do make sure that your child comes appropriately dressed for the weather. We recommend our Wizz Kids sweatshirts and polo shirts which can be ordered , there is an order form in your starting pack.

Please provide a pair of wellies for outdoor play. These should be kept at nursery and named. We will always have spare pairs but with hygiene in mind it would be best if they brought their own.

6

Page 7: Address: Wizz Kids, Totley Primary School, Totley ...€¦  · Web viewSing and tell nursery rhymes. Talk about the numbers, colours, words and letters you see when you are out and

Please ensure that all your child`s possessions are clearly named. It is very important to name all loose items of clothing and any footwear. You can purchase name labels using the NAMETAGS form in the starter pack. We can`t stress enough that naming every sock, shoe and glove will really help staff keep track throughout the day.

Snack time Fresh fruit, milk and water are constantly available to the children. The children have a choice on the kind of other snack they would like. Children are offered healthy snacks and water and milk are available throughout the day.

We celebrate any birthdays at work. If you wish to send anything special to eat when it is your child’s birthday you are welcome to do so. Please make all ingredients known to the supervisor i.e. nuts/nut oil, incase we have any children with specific dietary needs or allergies. The snack table is always supervised by a member of staff who will ensure the safety and dietary needs of all the children.

Lunch and tea timeOn the `About Me` page on TAPESTRY , there is a section to complete bout your child’s individual feeding patterns and dietary needs. This information is continuously updated as appetites and routines develop. Lunch time is between 12p.m-1p.m.

If your child is staying for lunch you can send them with a lunch and drink in a suitable container which clearly shows their name. Alternatively, you can buy a hot dinner from the school kitchen. There is a menu and form to sign in the reception area on a daily basis. These meals are not suitable for children under the age of 18 months. Please note that we can only reheat pre-cooked food at Wizz Kids, we do not have the facilities to prepare and cook any types of food on the premises. If your child will be eating tea with us, we would prefer that you purchase them a hot school meal at lunch time so that they can have sandwiches etc at teatime.

All chilled or fresh products will be stored in the fridge until required.

Bottles, cups and formula milk must be supplied by you and clearly named. Formula milk must be in an air tight sterile container. Feed bottles will be sterilized, stored and made up following advice set out by the Department of Health and the Food Standards Agency.

There is always an additional snack served at about 4p.m for those staying for the longer day.

It is always useful to know what you expect your children to eat and any family rules or routines during meal times, this is so we can reflect and enforce your family values. For example some parents will over fill the lunch box just in case but do not expect the child to eat everything, others will prefer the child to try to eat all the contents provided.

Illness/accidents If children appear unwell during the day-have a temperature, sickness, diarrhoea or pains, particularly in the head or stomach we will contact you to collect you child. If you cannot

do this,7

Page 8: Address: Wizz Kids, Totley Primary School, Totley ...€¦  · Web viewSing and tell nursery rhymes. Talk about the numbers, colours, words and letters you see when you are out and

yourselves you must send a known carer to collect your child on your behalf asap. If your child

becomes ill and no contact can be reached we will make your child comfortable in the quiet room

and attend to them until they can go home. If a more serious incident occurs and you cannot be

contacted in time, if staff ratios allow one member of staff will accompany your child to the

doctor/hospital and another member, based at Wizz Kids will continue to try to contact you.

After diarrhoea or sickness, parents are asked to keep children home for 48 hours

(or in the case of diarrhoea until a formed stool is passed). This table shows the recommended minimum period for staying away from nursery should your child suffer from any of the illness below (There is a more extensive list obtainable from www.hpa.org.uk/webc/HPAwebfile/HPAweb_C/1194947358374 )

Please note this is only a guide and medical advice should always be sort. Children must never be

sent to nursery if they are feeling unwell or have a high temperature regardless of them being

infectious or not: Please note we can and will refuse admittance to children who have atemperature, sickness and diarrhoea or a contagious infection or disease.

Administering MedicationWhile it is not our policy to care for sick children who should be at home until they are

wellenough to return to the setting, we will agree to administer medication as part of

maintainingtheir health and well-being or when they are recovering from an illness.

In many cases, it is possible for the GP to prescribe medicine that can be taken at home in the

morning and evening. As far as possible, administering medicines will only be done where it would

be detrimental to the child’s health if not given in the setting. If a child has not had a medication

before, especially a baby/child under two, it is advised that the parent keeps the child at home

for the first 48 hours to ensure no adverse effect, as well as to give time for the medication to

take effect. Children taking prescribed medication must be well enough to attend the setting!

Only medication prescribed by a doctor (or other medically qualified person) can be administered

by us. It must be in-date and prescribed for the current condition. Parents must give priorwritten permission for the administration of medication.

NB Children’s paracetamol (un-prescribed) is administered only for children under the age of one year with the verbal consent of the parents in the caseof a high temperature. This is to prevent febrile convulsion and where aparent on named person is on their way to collect the child. If your childrequires this kind of medication they should not be at nursery as they are obviously

unwell8

If your child has a non-serious accident at nursery i.e. falls and grazes their knee it will be dealt with by one of our first aid trained members of staff. The nature of the injury and treatment given will be recorded on an accident form and shared with you when you pick up your child. It is important you sign any such forms to show that we have passed on the correct information.

It is also important that you inform us of anything that has happened whilst not in our care. You will be asked to fill out a form describing the circumstances of the accident/incident and any further action that is needed such as any medication to be administered.

childcare vouchers scheme. More information at the government site `Childcare Choices `

Ofsted Registration NumberOur Ofsted Registration Number is 300784 - you may need this for Working Family Tax Credits or Childcare Vouchers.

Two full calendar months notice must be given if you decide to leave nursery or alter any session leading to a loss of income for Wizz Kids. This also applies to those granted a place who are currently waiting to start. Fees can be paid by Internet Banking i.e BAC’s Cheque or Childcare Vouchers. Our details to pay by BAC’s are Sort Code: 60-83-01, Account no. 20332907, please use your child’s name as a reference. In exceptional cases cash payments are accepted by Key Holder staff only, Alison Vickers, Jane Preston and Gill Oates. Wizz Kids takes no responsibility for unaccountable cash payments.

15 Hour FEL for Three year olds and the 30 hour top up for working parentsEvery child will receive Free Learning Entitlement (Nursery Grant) the term after they are 3 years old. This entitles them to up to 15 hours per week, 38 weeks a year completely free. Please note that you can only claim the Grant from a maximum of 2 different settings. For further details please ask. From September 2017 there is a new childcare grant aimed at helping working parents access more top up hours from providers of Free Learning Entitlement. Wizz Kids aims to provide top up hours for working parents and applications are welcomed. We will look at every case individually as places are limited and will be granted only if we have sessions available. All children on FEL placements will need to start nursery placements in September – January. Children with Easter eligibility will need to pay from January beforehand or delay their start until the following September. This is to minimize the huge loss in revenue by `holding` places until April.ContractsAll parents will be required to sign a contract outlining agreed hours and start date, before their child is allowed to start at nursery. There are terms and conditions alongside this contract detailing the nursery procedures regarding cancellation or alteration of sessions, FEL entitlement, offers of a place , fees and health and saftety protocol. You must agree to the terms and conditions before your contract is valid and a place secured. More information on eligibility for the top up hours can be found on the Sheffield government website` Childcare Choices`

To be able to maintain a suitable staffing ratio, for children attending Wizz Kids in term time only there can be no refunds for illness or holidays etc. Refunds will only be given if the nursery should fail to open i.e extreme weather conditions. It is recommended that you contact the nursery to confirm a situation.

For children attending all year round, there is 3 weeks holiday allocation, not including the 2 weeks we are shut during the Christmas period. Holidays must be booked with a half terms notice. Subsidized places are available for families who find the fees too high. Please do not hesitate to ask about these places and other forms of funding such as the Family Tax Credit, which can be used to pay up to 70% of your childcare costs.

11

Page 12: Address: Wizz Kids, Totley Primary School, Totley ...€¦  · Web viewSing and tell nursery rhymes. Talk about the numbers, colours, words and letters you see when you are out and

If your invoice is in arrears by more than 7 days we will speak directly to you regarding the matter and either a payment plan will be implemented or we will expect to receive payment within the next 7 days.

Accounts on a payment plan must be cleared one month before the child is due to leave.

If payments are not maintained there will be a £20 late fee charge for the first day and £2 daily charge there after until the amount due has been paid.

In the event of non-payment Wizz Kids reserve the right to:-

Withdraw your child’s fee-paid place and offer it to another child.

Recover monies owed by the use of debt collection agencies or by means of civil action. In the event of costs incurred by Wizz Kids in the pursuit of outstanding debt, any additional legal/administrative costs will be added to the original arrears. This could substantially increase the amount of monies owed to Wizz Kids.

Non-AttendanceYou must inform us as soon as is possible if your child is unable to attend nursery for any reason and we will fill out an absence form. These will be kept with your child’s records for auditing and health and safety purposes.

The forms also ensure we comply with Sheffield’s ‘Children Missing from Pre-school’ policy which the nursery is obliged to follow. As part of this policy if your child does not attend nursery for more than 3 weeks without any form of notification we will begin our Missing Children’s checklist.

In accordance with the Code of Practice on delivery of Early Years Free Entitlement Funding, grants will be paid for entitled children who go on holiday for up to 3 weeks per academic year, any additional weeks will have to be invoiced for.

If a child receiving Free Entitlement is unable to attend due to illness their place will be held and funding will be claimed as long as they are likely to return before the end of term.

We can not hold places open for children that do not attend, unless we have been informed on the first day of their absence.

If a child receiving Free Entitlement Funding misses the same block of funded hours for 3 consecutive weeks we will speak to you regarding the situation to see if alternative arrangements need to be made, funding may be withdrawn. FireWe will hold regular fire drills ensuring all the children are familiar with the procedure. There is a fire notice in the entrance, please make it a priority to read this when first arriving at Wizz Kids. On discovery of a fire, an adult will blow a whistle. In the case of an actual fire, if we are unable to re-enter the building (which is likely) we will contact you from school to collect your child. Another reason to ensure that your emergency contact details are up to date.

Parking Due to the safety of the children, please do not park or drive in the area between the vicarage (large house on the corner) and the school gates. Please do not use the area inside the school gates as a turning circle. 12

Page 13: Address: Wizz Kids, Totley Primary School, Totley ...€¦  · Web viewSing and tell nursery rhymes. Talk about the numbers, colours, words and letters you see when you are out and

We are not allowed access up the school drive at any time and there is a barrier preventing vehicular access We appreciate that the walk up the drive may seem long but please add the extra time it takes into your schedule, allowing an extra 5 minutes will ensure the safety and maintain good relations with everyone.

Arriving and leavingAll children must be accompanied into the main area of the group and handed over to a member of staff.

You must sign your children in and out on our register showing actual times not time booked! Not only is this important for safety reasons it is also important as we are audited by Sheffield City Council yearly and they require actual times to enable Free Learning Entitlement (FEL) funding to be paid. Note: If a FEL place has been booked but your child has not been regularly attending, money may be claimed back by them and the nursery will then require payment direct from you.

If there is anyone other than the regular person or persons collecting a child, a member of staff must be informed beforehand and a pass word will be issued for them to identify themselves. If we have not been informed we will contact you before allowing the child to leave. We require name and address details of all persons picking up your child no matter how infrequently.

Please note that if a person has parental responsibility for a child, we cannot stop them from collecting their child. This is, of course, unless there is an order from a court saying the contrary. If you are at all concerned about any issues surrounding who can, or can not collect your child please talk to the manager about them.

Parental responsibility is defined by the Children Act 1989. The act grants the responsibility for safeguarding, care and education of the children to:

Birth mother (parental responsibility is only lost if the mother puts the child up for adoption)

Birth father who is married to the birth mother (parental responsibility is only lost if the father puts the child up for adoption)

Birth father who is not married to birth mother but has applied for parental responsibility either through a residency order or through the Family Courts.

How can I find out how my child is getting on?It is important that we work together in regard to your child’s development. You need to feel comfortable about exchanging information and discussing things that will benefit your child. These conversations will need to be with your child’s “key person” or buddy .

Speak to your child’s key person as often as possible about what your child has been doing, what they have enjoyed, what they need to be doing more of and what you can do at home. You can also log into TAPESTRY as this will give you photos and observations on your child`s development whilst at Wizz Kids.

Progress check at age 2. This check will highlight areas where your child is progressing well and any area they might need some extra help or support – and how mums and dads and other family members or carers can work with the nursery to help. You might find it useful to share the information from the check with other professionals such as health visitors (who can use it as part of the health and development review).

When your child is 5At the end of the EYFS – in the summer term of the reception year in school – teachers complete an assessment which is known as the EYFS Profile. This assessment is carried out by the reception teacher and is based on what they, and other staff caring for your child, have observed over a period of time.

Where can I go for further information? The most important place to find out more is us – do ask as many questions as you need to. We really do welcome speaking with you.

You may want to find out what is on offer at your local children’s centre. You can find the Early Years Foundation Stage which includes the early learning goals at www.foundationyears.org.uk. The foundation years website also includes a range of resources and contacts. 15
