Introduction

Additional Skills Training Programme: Term 1

For 2013-14, Bucks Students’ Union is happy to announce the extension of our Additional Skills Training Programme; and this is just the beginning with more coming in the second term! Using a combination of in-house trainers, external specialists and guest speakers, we have put together a broad range of sessions to help you develop as many and as wide a range of skills as possible during your time at university, increasing your employability upon graduation.

We are always looking to expand our offering further and are constantly investing in your future employability, so let us know what you think of the sessions on offer and what you would like to see in the future.

Public Speaking Masterclass

Summary:In this workshop you will receive practical tips and advice from Alan Elston - a public speaking expert - on how to develop confidence, address nerves and deliver engaging speeches in a friendly environment that will enable you to try out techniques and develop your own personal style. Whether you will be speaking in front of a lecture theatre, as an election candidate, or are an experienced public speaker looking to refresh your skills, this session is a must for anyone who wants to develop this crucial life skill and great graduate prospects.

Suitable for:Our members who want to be more confident speaking publically, those thinking of running as Sabbatical Officers or anyone who wants to improve their presentations.

Recognise Your Skills

Summary:This session will help you to identify the skills you have been using and developing while volunteering in one of the Students’ Union departments. You will also have a chance to look at the JobSavviGrad tool to record your experiences and apply them to job searches. For more information please go to bucks.ac.uk/careers.

Suitable for:Reps, volunteers, sports and society committee members, student trustees, any student who wants to increase the profile of their extracurricular experience.

Advanced Public Speaking

Summary:This session is for students who have already attended the Public Speaking Masterclass and are keen to challenge themselves to go beyond the basics. With public speaking expert Alan Elston, you will polish and perfect your presentations - whatever the topic - looking at how you develop a relationship with your audience, what happens when it all goes wrong, and how to maintain control for an engaging, professional piece. Not for the feint hearted!

Suitable for:Students who have attended the Public Speaking Masterclass and want to polish their own five minute speeches.

Student Rep Training

Summary:This training day will provide you with all of the information you will need for the year ahead as student rep. This includes: what to expect in your programme committee meetings, how to find out what the students you represent think, and how to make sure you get paid for your work! This is a great way to get to know reps from across the University and gain some valuable skills for your CV.

Suitable for:A compulsory session for all student reps, the first step to earning your £100 reward payment.

Summary:This workshop will raise your awareness of the telltale signs of abuse and poor practice, and give you the tools you need to deal with any issues sensitively, appropriately and effectively should the need ever arise in your coaching career.

Validation & Periodic Review Training

Summary:Courses at Bucks are reviewed every six years to ensure that they are moving with the times, lecturers are engaging with current research, and the department is meeting the needs of students. Every course at Bucks has to be validated before it can commence, proving that the department and University is ready to provide for students in this area. Every Periodic Review and Validation Panel requires a student member to ensure that student views and needs are being considered throughout. This training will give you all the background you need to make a meaningful contribution to periodic review and validation panels and improve the experience of those who follow you.

Suitable for:Reps, members considering standing for election, any student who wants to ensure a quality education for all Bucks students.

Activities Week

Summary:During Activities Week we have almost 200 sessions running. These range from guest speakers to industry panels with lots of skills workshops, enterprise and employability sessions to boost your CV. This is a years worth of training and development all rolled into one week. Be sure to make the most of it.

Suitable for:Every student will be able to find something they are interested in or would like to try.

Effective Chairing Masterclass

Summary:Vice Chancellor Prof. Ruth Farwell Chairs some of the most important committees in the institution and also Chairs meetings for a number of national education bodies such as Guild HE. This session will provide you with expert tips on how to ensure you make things happen within committees, how to draw a line under controversial debate and deal with troublesome committee members.

Suitable for:Sports and society chairpersons, student and senior reps, student trustees, any student interested in taking on such a role in the future.

If you are struggling to fit things such as studying, a part-time job, rehearsals, sports training, volunteering, sleeping and partying into the 168 hours of a week, then this session is for you. This interactive session looks at the best ways to manage all of your work load and still find time for those extracurricular activities.

Suitable for:Members who have lots of things to do and seemingly not enough time in which to do it.

Cultural Awareness Training

Summary:Out of our total student body we currently have around 250 international students from over 50 countries around the world. Their backgrounds, cultures and views can be very different to British culture and it can be useful to have a greater understanding of these differences; a relevant and interesting session that will benefit all.

Suitable for:Any members who wants to improve their understanding of diverse cultures.

Summary:This four hour course is suitable for any student involved in coaching any sport at club level. Areas covered include crisis management and dealing with respiratory and circulatory arrest, fractures, bleeding and thermal injuries.

Places on all of our training sessions can be booked online through our website at: bucksstudentsunion.org/events. This calendar displays all of the events planned by Bucks Students’ Union and you can filter the events available to find just the training sessions on offer. Once you have found the session you are after, simply click on the tickets to book your free place. You may be asked for a delivery address or contact details but don’t worry; you won’t need any physical tickets and it won’t cost you a penny.
