ayhem A Get Up and Move Game

~ Adding Common Denominator Fractions Edition

One of the hardest things in elementary and middleschool is making computation practice fun. I use this gamewith all sorts of topics in my class. This product contains thegame procedure, 1 set of Adding Common DenominatorFraction problems ready to print and use, and answer keys for

    all.

Directions:1. Set up the desks so that they are in pairs. Students areworking individually, not together. My desks are facing twodifferent directions so that both students can easily get in andout of their desks, if your chairs are attached.

    2. Have students take out a white lined piece of paper andnumber it 1-30. Have students skip lines between numbers toallow them room to work. I typically have student fold paperin half so that they can use both columns and the back.

    3. While students are numbering paper, place problem cardson a table or desk in two/three locations around the room. Itypically use a spare desk in the front and one in the back. I

suggest printing problemcards on cardstock or oak tag so that they stand up to theabuse. My favorite sets are actually laminated. If you haveclose to thirty students in your class, it may be helpful to havemultiple copies of a couple of problems. This will increase thenumber of cards available to choose from without increasingthe number of problems.

    4. To start the game, have half the students (one per pair) puttheir hand on their head. Flip a coin. If the result of the flip isHeads, the students with hands on heads go first. If the result ofthe flip is Tails, the students with hands on their heads gosecond.

    5. Only one student, from a pair of desks, is allowed to be awayfrom their desk at a time. This cuts down on the number ofstudents moving in the class, and it creates a littledrama/excitement.

    6. When they are able to, students rush to one of the card centersand choose a card. They are not allowed to look at it until theyreturn to their desks. Once at their desks, open the card andcomplete the problem listed. Remind students to match thenumber problem with the correct number location on theirpage.

    7. When the student completes the problem, they get up andtrade it with another card. Remind students again that they cannot get up until their partner is seated.

    8. Have the students work for a predetermined amount of time,10-20 minutes depending on the level of the students. I do notanticipate that they will be able to complete all of the problems.

    9. Go over the problems as a group, answering questions when

necessary. I typically award the student with the most correctanswers a prize. Sometimes I will also award any student thatgot a predetermined number of problems correct. This giveseveryone a manageable goal even if they know they will not bethe ultimate winner. Easy prizes: homework passes and smellystickers.
