FOREWORD

TheEuropeanCenterforAdvancedResearchinEconomicsandStatistics(ECARES)isaresearchcenterattheUniversitélibredeBruxelles(ULB).ThebroadobjectiveofECARESistofosterexcellenceinresearchandhigh-qualitygraduateeducationineconomics,econometricsandstatistics.Inauguratedin1991astheEuropeanCenterforAdvancedResearchinEconomics(ECARE),itstartedasa joint initiativeoftheInstitutd’Etudeseuropéennes(IEE)attheULB,andoftheCentreforEconomicPolicy Research (CEPR), a network of around 500 researchers in Europe. In 1999, ECARE wastransformed into ECARES, following the merger with the Centre d’Economie Mathématique etd’Econométrie (CEME) and the collaboration with statisticians from Institut de Statistique et deRechercheOpérationnelle(ISRO).ECARESfellowsareleadingresearchersinanumberoffields,includingthebehaviorandorganizationoffirmsandmarkets, international trade,politicaleconomy, theoryandempiricsofhouseholdbehavior,theoryandapplicationsofeconometrics,developmentofnonparametricandrobuststatisticalmethods.ManyofthemareveryactiveinCEPR(asResearchDirector,ProgrammeDirectors,ResearchFellowsorResearchAffiliates).SeveralhavereceivedgrantsfromtheEuropeanResearchCouncil(ERC)andotherprestigiousprizesandawards.Incloseconnectionwith its researchactivities,ECAREShasdevelopedaDoctoralSchool,whichoffersinternationallycompetitive,highqualityPhDprograms inEconomicsandStatisticsand inQuantitativeEconomics.TheECARESDoctoralSchoolattractsmanyfirst-classEuropeanandnon-Europeanstudents.TheoutstandingqualityofitsPhDprogramsisreflectedinthesuccessofitsgraduatesontheacademicjobmarket.ECAREScollaborateswithCORE(theCenterforOperationsResearchandEconometricoftheUniversitécatholique de Louvain) and CES (the Center for Economic Studies of KULeuven), with which it hascreated a common center of excellence, ECORES, integrating the research activities and doctoralprogramsofthethreeinstitutions.

It finds that theECARESDoctoralSchoolisamong thetop ten inEuropeand thethirdbest inContinentalEurope.Upongraduation,ourstudentsfindpositionsinacademia,centralbanksandotherinternationalorganizations,inEuropebutalsointheUSandLatinAmerica(seeourplacementpagefordetails)ThefirsttwoyearsofthePhDprogramsconsistmainlyofcoursework.Duringthefirstyearthestudentstake courses inmacroeconomics, microeconomics, econometrics, and statistics.
