Activity 2 Do you know Sunthon Phu?

Part 1: Read the passage and answer the questions below.

Sunthon Phu was born in Rattanakosin on June 26, 1786,

during the first reign of the Chakri Dynasty. Shortly after birth, his

parents split up. His father joined the monkhood in Rayong and his

mother became a milk nurse at the palace where Sunthon Phu grew up

and was educated. His early years in the palace brought him into

contact with nobles and royalty, who would help to secure his status as

a royal poet. It was here that he fell in love with Mae Jun, one of

King’s servants. Aside from the problem that Mae Jun was a direct

female servant of the King, Sunthon Phu’s womanizing was a constant

cause of irritation and led to many quarrels. It wasn’t only his love life

that led him to arguments; Sunthon Phu was also a heavy drinker and

often got into fights with others in the palace. At one point he was

even imprisoned for a short time in an attempt to calm down such

behavior.
