Schools and local authorities that get enough pupils filling in the survey will receive a detailed picture of the sporting opinions of their young people. The information will help them make informed decisions and improvements to their sporting structure and get more young people playing sport. The data will also be used by Sport Wales and the Welsh Government to inform decisions on policy and investment. The Sport Wales School Sport Survey is being completed this Summer term by schools. It was the biggest ever survey of children, young people and sport when it was last completed in 2011. Lisa Evans, PE Co-ordinator at Ysgol Llangoed said: “Completing the questionnaires is very important for our school as it will tell us what our children enjoy about physical education. It will benefit the school as we plan and asses Physical Education lessons and sport provision from year to year”. In 2011, headline findings included levels of club participation for primary school pupils being at their highest recorded level (85%) since 2000, while the gender gap between boys and girls taking part in sport was found to increase through secondary school years. All pupils in school years three to 11 are being asked to complete the survey by the end of term. Schools across Wales have received personalised instructions to access their own survey. A representative number of pupils need to complete the survey in order for a school to qualify for their own personalised report. Llangoed School lead the way for Wales

Ysgol Llangoed has become the first school, not only on Anglesey, but throughout Wales to complete the

national School Sport Survey for 2013.

Schools and local authorities that get enough pupils filling in the survey will receive a detailed picture of the

sporting opinions of their young people. The information will help them make informed decisions and

improvements to their sporting structure and get more young people playing sport.

The data will also be used by Sport Wales and the Welsh Government to inform decisions on policy and

investment. The Sport Wales School Sport Survey is being completed this Summer term by schools. It was the

biggest ever survey of children, young people and sport when it was last completed in 2011.

Lisa Evans, PE Co-ordinator at Ysgol Llangoed said: “Completing the questionnaires is very important for our

school as it will tell us what our children enjoy about physical education. It will benefit the school as we plan and

asses Physical Education lessons and sport provision from year to year”.

In 2011, headline findings included levels of club participation for primary school pupils being at their highest

recorded level (85%) since 2000, while the gender gap between boys and girls taking part in sport was found to

increase through secondary school years.

All pupils in school years three to 11 are being asked to complete the survey by the end of term. Schools across

Wales have received personalised instructions to access their own survey. A representative number of pupils

need to complete the survey in order for a school to qualify for their own personalised report. To find out more

FOOTBALL FUN DAY

Disability Sport Wales Development Officer for Anglesey, Karen Williams said: “It is always great to see the people of Amlwch get together to fundraise and play football. The Lions really enjoy the experience of playing against other teams and had a great day. A huge thanks to all who helped make the event possible, those who came along to watch and support the raffle and to the Adelphi Vaults for their hospitality after the game.”

My journey started in 2010, when I saw some adverts for free kay-aking lessons taking place with the Isle of Anglesey Council and Outdoor Partnership. It was something I had wanted to do since I did kayaking in my youth at school.

So after three freebies, I was advised by the Outdoor Partner-ship that a new club had been formed in Amlwch, so off I went to Amlwch Leisure Centre to see what was happening.

Amlwch Pool session was my first encounter, where Outdoor Partnership staff Simon Jones and Eila Wilkinson taught us some of the basic strokes.

Into 2011 and five of us set off on the journey towards becoming coaches. We were immersed in the freezing cold waters of Holyhead Harbour when we did our Foundation Rescue and Safety Training (subsidised by the Outdoor Partnership Coach Education Funding), and Level 1 Coach Assessment. Undeterred, the pool sessions continued until the spring of 2011 when the Amlwch Club, moved outside into open waters.

The coaching aspect was continual learning i.e. the technical aspect of the strokes, the names, acquiring other qualifications such as First Aid, 3 Star, Child Protection and more.

By 2012, the summer consisted of paddling to consolidate my own skills, as well as coaching other club members. By now I was coaching on the open water, in the pool, and under strict scrutiny on moving water, as well as leading certain elements of sea and river trips. By spring 2013, it was a case of ‘ready or not here I come’ and the fruition of all the training, courses, tears and laughter came with the Level 2 assessment. Phew, I passed it!

The journey continues. It is time

for me to take a step back, catch

my breath and then carry on

coaching and help to carry the

club and Paddlesport into the

future.

Volunteer Profile My Journey to BCU Level 2 Paddlesport Coach

By Claire Branston, Amlwch Canoe Club

Volunteers’ Week is an annual celebration of the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK – and it’s taking place from the 1-7 June 2013. This year’s Volunteers’ Week focuses on saying ‘Thank You’ to the millions of volunteers who regularly contribute to society, and to recognise the way that organisations celebrate the work of volunteers across the UK. Isle of Anglesey’s Sports Development Unit is looking to work closely with sport clubs on the Island to help them with volunteering issues, including promoting volunteering opportunities, training and retaining existing helpers. There will be a brand new Volunteer Database launching soon to match potential volunteers with sporting placements. To learn more about Volunteers’ Week 2012, visit www.volunteersweek.org.
