ÂC5 Building Cornerstone Laid Time capsule sealed during brief ceremony, move to new quarters to start in January 1 H E COHNERSTOXE of the new ACS headquarters building in Wasliington, D.C., was slipped into place Saturday, Dec. 5, in a brief, informal ceremony. The headquarters staff will start mov- ing into the new building early in January (C&EN, Dec. 7, page 25). Presiding at the ceremony was Dr. Wallace R. Brode, chairman of trie ACS Committee on Building, and science adviser to the Secretary of State. After the ceremony, Dr. George B. Kistia- kowsky, President Eisenhower's Special Assistant for Science and Technology, spoke at a luncheon at the Mayflower Hotel. (Dr. Kistiakowsky, on leave from Harvard, has just been named winner of the ACS Chicago Section's Willard Gibbs Medal—see page 102.) The cornerstone covers a time cap- sule—a thin copper container—which was prepared in the lobby of the new building. Dr. Brode handled the dis- position of documents to be included in the time capsule. He was assisted by Robert V. Mellefont, ACS Treasurer, and Dr. Bradford R. Stanerson, Director of Membership Activities. Included in the capsule: • Representative articles of the ACS Bulletin Service—placed in the con- tainer by Dr. John C. Bailar, Jr., Presi- dent of the ACS. • Histories of the Society at 25, 50, and 75 years, plus a copy of the latest annual report—placed by George Tay- lor, recently retired Assistant Secretary. • Photographs of the old head- quarters building—AI den H. Emery, Executive Secretary. • List of Society officers—Lucy M. Massey, head of the Records Depart- ment • Board Authorization for the new building—Dr. Arthur C. Cope, newly elected President-Elect for 1960. • Copy of plea to the ACS Council for the new building—Dr. Ralph Con- nor, Director. • Promotional literature—John H. Murphy, who, as Editorial Director of the Applied Publications, had been extremely active in the build- ing fund campaign. ) • Register of persons who attended the cornerstone laying ceremony—Betty Ch^ «e, administrative assistant to Alden H. Emery. • A penny for good luck—Robert Gould, Jr., son of C&EN's Managing Editor, Robert F. Gould.
