Regarding production, in view of the entry of new steel producers in the market and the achievement of the full rhythm of operation by CSP, the Brazilian steel industry should have record crude steel production (estimated at 36 million tons) this year. Imports are expected to increase by 2.6% compared to 2017, totaling 2.4 Mt and exports expected to fall by 7.2%, and should reach 14.2 Mt. Despite positive numbers for 2018, when compared to 2017, projections of domestic sales and apparent consumption still remain below the levels reached in 2013. The truckers' strike, which occurred in May, led to a further increase in steel sales in the domestic market in 2018, and US President Donald Trump's decision to restrict the US steel market (Section 232) triggered protectionist escalation by the other countries hindering the growth of the volume of the exports. With optimistic expectations about the measures being announced by the future Government, the forecasts of the Brazil Steel Institute for 2019 are an increase of 5.8% in internal steel sales, totaling a volume of 20 million tons. Apparent steel consumption is expected to rise 6.2% in 2019, going to 22.4 million tons. The Brazil Steel Institute, which integrates the business coalition of the industry alongside other 09 class entities (ABIMAQ, ABINEE, Abicalçados, ABIQUIM, ABIT, ABRINQ, ANFAVEA, AEB and CBIC), has talked with the government's transition team, defending an agenda that has as its first and essential priority the fiscal adjustment, associated with the approval of pension and tax reforms. Also included in the agenda of the coalition are the resumption of investments in civil construction and infrastructure and the promotion of exports. In relation to a greater commercial opening of the country, the coalition understands that only being done after the corrections of the competitive asymmetries. In this sense, the economic area of the future government has already signaled that the opening will be done in a gradual, safe and negotiated way. 42 42 42 DECEMBER | 2018 DECEMBER | 2018 DECEMBER | 2018

BRAZILIAN STEEL INDUSTRY CONFIRMS 2018 RECOVERY TRAJECTORY

ndndnd

The performance of the Brazilian steel industry in 2018 should conclude its recovery trajectory, with growth in domestic sales of 8.9% in relation to 2017, totaling 18.8 million tons, and of 8.2% in apparent consumption, which is expected to reach 21.1 million tons, according to a forecast by the Brazil Steel Institute.

Modular walkways on DNIT Highways is the theme that must be worked out by the participants of the 1st edition of the Engineering Students' Competition, a project developed by the Brazilian Center of Steel Construction (CBCA). Interested teams must enroll by 02/11/2019, with a minimum of two and a maximum of six students. Students, who must be tutored by a professor from the same school or college, are challenged to a competition that complements their training, with comprehensive experience in the design, structural design and assembly scheme of modular steel or mixed steel-concrete walkways. The jury will evaluate, in particular, the correct and appropriate use of steel, both in structural and aesthetic aspects, as well as in the constructive aspects of fabrication, transportation and assembly. One of the main highlights of this Competition is the fact that the winning project can be executed, making it a reality to build the walkway designed by the winning team, to whom will be awarded the respective credits and moral copyrights.

The winning team will receive R$ 8,000, distributed among the students responsible for the winning project and the professor adviser, as well as several manuals on steel construction of CBCA and free vouchers for the online courses offered by the entity. The announcement of the winner will be made on 04/19/2019 on the CBCA website. For more information on the competition go to: www.cbca-acobrasil.org.br/engenharia

Crude steel production reached 29.2 million tons in the period up to October 2018, which represents an increase of 2.6% over the same period of the previous year. The production of rolled products during the same period was 19.5 million tons, an increase of 4.7% compared to 2017. The production of semi-finished products for sales was 8.1 million tons in the period of 2018, which means an increase of 1.0% in the same base of comparison1.

Domestic sales were 15.4 million tons from January to October 2018, an increase of 9.5% when compared to the same period of the previous year.

Apparent domestic consumption of steel products was 17.3 million tons in the same period, which represents an increase of 8.2% compared to the period from January to October 2017.

Imports reached 2.1 million tons in the period from January to October 2018, which translates into an expansion of 2.9% over the same period of the previous year. In value, imports reached US $ 2.2 billion, up 18.7% over the same period of comparison.

Regarding exports, SECEX/MDIC changed the methodology for collecting data from the Portal Único de Comércio Exterior (Single Foreign Trade Portal, which could generate significant changes and revisions in the results accumulated until October, as occurred in August and September. Until the system is standardized, in order to continue the original trend of the data, Brazil Steel Institute opted, temporarily, not to publish the SECEX/ MDIC2 export indicators.

¹ Due to a loss that occurs during the steel production process, the sum of the production of rolled and semi-finished products for sales does not equal the total production of crude steel.² http://comexstat.mdic.gov.br/pt/informativo/25
