ACL tip: Unfreezing ACL

Occasionally when usingACL, t he applicat ion appears to freeze wh en I open a dialog box. So I restar t A CL and it

works fine u nt il I repeat th e act ion th at froze i t in the fir st pla ce. For m e, it al way s ha ppen s when I open th e

Edit Lay out dialog box to create a com puted field. Never any other window.

Or in ACL terms, also known as What happened to the Edit Layout screen?

Note to non-A CL users: This problem isnt particular to ACL, so you might want to read the Finding the

Cause topic below before you blow off this post entirely.

Iv e noticed th at t his only occur s after I last used ACL on a 2-monitor system . The setup I norma lly use is my

laptop screen plus an additional m onitor. But w hen Im at home or on the r oad and only hav e my laptop, fire

up ACL, and go to Edit, Lay out, th e problem occurs: apparent ACL freeze with ev ery oth er application working .

Youll kn ow y our e hav ing this pr oblem when y ou n otice t he following :

You ca nt do an y thing in ACL.

The m ain A CL screen is gr ey ed out (in other w ords, its not activ e because anoth er screen/dialog box is

activ emore on that la ter).

Checking Task Manager indicates that A CL is Runnin g instead of Not Responding .

You hav e an urgent ACL project in process th ats past deadline alr eady .

We first l ook a t th e fix , th en th e cau se

Fixing the Freeze

1 . Click the icon in y our t askbar (bottom of window) to activ e the frozen applicat ion (in this case, ACL).

2. From y our key boar d, hold ALT and press th e SPACE BAR.

3. Then press M once.

4. Using y our cur sor key s, press the LEFT and UP arrow key s a dozen or so tim es (alter nat e between LEFT

and UP). A t t his point, a portion of th e Table Lay out w indow should show up on y our screen. If it does not,

keep pressing LEFT an d UP ar row key s a dozen m ore tim es.

5. Once the Ta ble Lay out dialog box appears on screen, pr ess ENTER. You should now be able to use y our

m ouse to drag the Ta ble Lay out dialog box back in full v iew so y ou ca n see it.

6. Close the Table Lay out dialog box and sav e y our pr oject. Then open Edit, Lay out again t o ensure the Table

Finding the Cause

When Im using m y 2-monit or sy stem , I keep m y la ptop screen as t he pr im ary m onit or, sta rt ACL, a nd then

drag it to my secondary monitor, w hich is larger tha n m y laptop screen. So when I click Edit, Lay out, t he

Table Lay out dialog box pops open on m y prim ary m onitor.

I dont like to split an a pplication between 2 m onitors, so I drag t he open dialog box from m y prim ar y monitor

to my secondary screen. Because my secondary screen is NOT m y desktop (again, I could configure th at way ,

but I dont for r easons that arent relev an t here), I just cr eated m y freeze pr oblem . Th e next tim e I use ACL

on m y laptop without t he secondar y m onitor, th e dialog box pops onto my non-existent secondary m onitor an d

I cant see it. Becau se the dialog box is open, A CL appears frozen, becau se you ca nt do any th ing else before y ou

close th e dialog box.

This occasionall y happens wit h applications besides ACL, so th e fix abov e wil l w ork for th ose application also.

The r eason I positioned this issue as an ACL freeze is because I orig inally th oug ht th at t his was an ACL-

specific problem a nd figur ed all th ose frustr ated ACL au ditors and u sers would google ACL Edit Lay out Freeze

like I did.

I realize that m ost people arent going to use m y stra nge 2 -m onitor setup and hav e these issues, but for th ose

5 or 7 others out t here in t he blogsphere w ho hav e a tw isted intellect like m ine, I found a fix. For all th e rest of

y ou, hopefully y ou fou nd this in teresting an y way or y ou g ot a good giggl e at m y expense.

As a lw ay s, i f y ouv e ex per ien ced this issue w ith ACL or a nother applica tion and this fix helped y ou, let us
