    Summary of Achievements

    1: Latrines Installation.

According to planed activity for latrines installation each school and health unit had to

facilitate with two latrines and we had to install 244 latrines in all schools and health units

in targeted area, but after specific criteria for latrines from UNICEF the number of targeted

latrines increased from 244 to 290 in 105 Schools and 5 Health Units.

We installed latrines, which is fit for the tough and hard environment of targeted area in

Schools and Health Units. All latrines are 2 X 3 X 6, feet (width, length and depth

respectively). These are pet latrines made of CGI sheets.

We achieved the target and the detail is as under.

    Total Latrines installed= 290

No. Of schools facilitated with latrines=105

No. Of health Units facilitated with latrines=5

    No. Of beneficiaries= 10358

    2: Water Supply.

Our target was to provide water to schools and health Units in 5 Union councils. We fixed

water tanks (UNICEF Supplied) and Stands and connected these water tanks to the main

source of water. We completed 113 water supply

schemes in 105 schools and 8 Health Units. The water

Tanks that have been fixed is made of Fiber Glass and

we used GI and HDP Pipes while connecting it to the

    main water Source.

The detail of Completed water supply schemes is.

    3: Dustbins installation

Along with installation of latrines and provision of water

We had to install Dustbins in schools for Hygiene Promotion. We installed the dustbins and

    the detail is:

    Total Dust bins installed= 110

    No. Of schools=105

    No. Of Health Units= 5

    4: Teacher Trainings

For the Hygiene promotion in schools training for schools teachers was very necessary,

because teachers have more interaction with students. We trained the schools teachers on

SSHE through CTC approach in targeted area in 5 trainings. The purpose of these trainings

was to aware the teachers about Hygiene, how different diseases spread and how to prevent

from these diseases. These teacher trainings were very helpful for the sustainability and

continuation of Hygiene promotion, as after the completion of the project, these teachers

will continue hygiene promotion in their schools.

    5: Pre and Post-Kap survey

Salik Foundation conducted KAP survey, which clarify the things like Hygienic condition,

usages of latrines and knowledge regarding diseases in percentage form.

This Kap survey has been conducted in 15 schools in which three schools has been selected

from each Union council. For this Kap Survey a Pre-developed questionnaire was used

    containing a list of questions.

The pre kap survey was conducted for the following three project components.

    6: Hygiene sessions with students

For Hygiene promotion in schools Hygiene sessions with schools students were very

necessary and this was a very vital component of the project. These Hygiene sessions

created awareness among the students. Salik Foundation conducted Hygiene sessions

regularly in schools of targeted area and completed 660 Hygiene sessions. These sessions

  • Salik Development Foundation (SDF) 16

were about Personal Hygiene, Latrine usage, Food Hygiene, Domestic Hygiene,

Environmental Hygiene and Water born diseases.

    The topics of hygiene sessions were;

Usage of latrine & its advantages

    Harmful effects of open defecation

Importance of clean & safe drinking water

    Water born diseases

Water purification methods on local household level i.e boiling and through sunlight etc

    Prevention & Control of diseases

Protection of environment & Natural resources

    Personal hygiene especially hand wash

    7: Competition Ceremonies:

We arranged 5 competition ceremonies in 5 union councils to encourage the students and to

aware the students about the importance of hygiene. In all competition ceremonies students

and teachers participated very actively and took part in debates and skits (stage drama) etc.

8: SEC (School Environmental Committee Formation:

School Environmental Committees were formed to take care of WES Facilities in Schools

and also to be involved in Hygiene promotion activities. These environmental Committees

consist of two teachers and 4 students. These members check the cleanliness of other

school children‟s as well as convey Hygiene messages.

Case study of Adil (GGPS Bandi Shora)

Bandi Shora is a small village in UC Heer Kutli District Muzaffarabad of almost 56

Households. It is 15 Kilometer away from Muzaffarabad and takes one and half hour. Most

of the people are engaged in agriculture and few of them are working as labor in different

    cities.

The massive earthquake of October 2005 badly affected this village. Schools and houses

became collapsed. Because of this the growth of hygienic atmosphere has been slow down

and people suffered from different diseases like diarrhea, hepatitis and scabies etc.

After earthquake SDF started work on water supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion in

schools. For the Hygiene Promotion the Hygiene promoters used to visit different schools

on daily basis. GGPS Bandi shora is one the school where our promoters visited and

experienced and analyzed both individual and collective level problems related to Hygiene.

Promoter experienced a boy name Adil of Class 5th

on individual level, in a very bad

Hygienic condition. He was separately appointed because of his outlook and health

condition. He was sick and suffering from Flue.

  • Salik Development Foundation (SDF) 17

For the improvement of Hygienic condition SDF

    Team took the Following steps.

    Stage 1:

I: Observed general environment inside and

    outside the school.

II: Took Hygiene session in class.

    Stage 2:

I: Hygiene Promoter met the teachers and did brain storming.

II: Ask the questions to find the reason of bad hygienic condition. They were told that

After the earthquake their parents are in economic crises, because of that they are disturb

and not paying attention to their children‟s. Due to lake of attention became careless about

    Hygiene.

    Stage 3:

    SDF Hygiene Promoters started Hygiene

sessions with students regularly, while taking

session‟s changes in students were noted. Adil

adopted the phenomena of Hygiene rather

quickly compare to other students. He felt

    ashamed initially, but Hygiene promoters

noticed that he was more efficient towards the

lecture and adopting the change day by day.

    Stage 4:

He started coming to school in neat and clean clothes. Adil not only came out from

bad hygienic condition but he used to discuss about hygiene at home and in village.

Stage 5: When SDF team visited again to form School environmental committee (SEC) they found

that Adil was teaching about Hygiene to his fellows in school. Adil attracted the teachers

and SDF staff members so much that he was chosen as a member of SEC.

    Output

Adil became a member of SEC and now he is checking the cleanliness of school students.

He is taking care of latrines cleanliness and also teaching to his fellows about hygiene.

„„Adil is living 1 km away from school in village Bandi shora. He has two brothers and two

sisters. His father is 35 years old and agriculture is the main source of earning. Adil wants

to become a doctor to help others.‟‟

    Success story GBPS Chowki

After the earthquake SDF started School Wes Project in 5 UCs of District Muzaffarabad.

UC Bhari was one of them. The prolonged disastrous conditions of earthquake in UC

Bhairi effected the flows of products and destroyed also the physical assets of the poor

household especially schools of the mentioned UC. GBP School Chowki which is situated

in the very start of valley Bhairi.

What was the big issues in GBP school Chowki was to install latrines, distribute soap, jerry

cans and provision of water, though it is the routine work of Salik Foundation as they were

doing the same activities in all schools in the project area but especially here in this specific

school doing all these activities were really a challenge, because in this school there were

two teachers and both belongs to two different races, “Sardar” and “Meer”. Teacher belong

to sardar family always wanted to let down the teacher belong to Meer family and it was

    the case with other.

They had harsh political, social, cultural and racial grudges between them, and another

problem was that the community had also harsh political clashes with the Meer family

teacher. As the old school building was completely collapsed so because of these clashes

the community was openly exposed to unawareness and unfavorable to social mobilization.

  • Salik Development Foundation (SDF) 19

What SDF did to adjust the issue?

SDF‟s social Mobilizers started the process of social mobilization to over come the

vulnerability, lack of flexibility and established social safety nets in order to adjust the

prescribed project activities within a reasonable coverage.

SDF did it in the following stages.

Stage-1:- In the first stage SDF‟s change agents initiated a dialogue with local

community and sensitize them over the following discussion.

Bhairi has been deserted and it is impossible to rebuild without community cooperation.

It is impossible to guide/train the students without community cooperation.

If local community doesn‟t want to mitigate the vulnerability no one can mitigate.

Satge-2:- They were effectively sensitized which created a congenial atmosphere for

open discussion and SDF change agents realized their mitigation over harsh political, social

    grudges.

Stage-3:- In this stage three visits of SDF change agents pushed a conceiving ideology

of conceptualization regarding project activities and the above mentioned issues.

Satge-4:- In this stage a warm processional meeting of fifty people was arranged.

This way both of the teachers and also the community members realized the problem, as

one of the teacher had also attended the teacher‟s training conducted by SDF on SSHE

through CTC, this training was also very helpful to change the old concepts, so finally both

the parties came together and came strongly that they not only helped themselves but also

made it easy for the SDF staff.

    What they contributed?

Removed the old school building‟s waste materials. Built shelter in that old place. Dug three pits for latrines. Took over the latrine sheets from road to school. Cooperated fully with technical staff during latrines installation Provided water source. Cooperated fully with SDF‟s staff during distribution of soap/jerry cans among the

    students.

It was a big success for the SDF change agents because at one stage it was impossible to

even talk about the project activities but after long talks, involving community and

  • Salik Development Foundation (SDF) 20

mobilizing them things went so smooth and SDF change agents successfully completed

    project activities.

Case study of Nasim Barkat GBPS Andher Bella

Andher Bela is a small village of UC Dudnial, Tehsil Athmuqam, Disctrict Neelum. There

are 60 house holds in the village. It is situated on a distance of 40 km from Athmuqam,

while its distance is 3 km from main road. Majority of the people are farmers while some

are employees and professionals. The said village was directly affected by Indian firing and

bombardment for the last 14 years. The social activities especially education and jobs were

badly effected. As after cease fire the people were satisfied and towards prosperity, then the

historic incident of Earthquake 2005 happened, which lead the people back once again. The

buildings collapsed especially schools buildings. Also there is no health facility. Similarly

there was lack of hygiene and healthy life practices due to unawareness and illiteracy.

Majority of masses were illiterate. In these circumstances, Salik Development Foundation

began the school WES program in UC Dundnial. In this connection the Hygiene promoters

visited GBPS Andher Bela. The status of cleanliness was very poor and bad. They took

hygiene session with students of this school. In this session the children were told about the

harmful effects of dirtiness and benefits and useful effects of cleanliness.

When they visited this school next time, they noticed some developmental changes in the

children. But the standard of cleanliness was still not improved in 100 percent children. In

these children there was a student “Nasim Barkat” of class five. He had skin infection. The

hair and nails were long, clothes and hands were also dirty. When they asked from Barkat

that do you have these problem in your home? Then he replied that his younger brothers

and sisters have the same problem. When asked about taking bath he replied that he used to

take bath once a month rarely.

    Success Story (GBPS Subhai story)

Subhai is a small village in Uc Dudhnyal District Neelum. It is 40 km away from Town

Authmaqam. This is near to loc and has been destroyed from India firing for 14 years. But

after truce since 2003 the people of this village saw a ray of happiness and they had

construed their village. But the earthquake of October 8, 2007 terrified the people of this

village and destroyed this village. The building of GBPS Subhai also destroyed.

When salik Foundation started work in District Neelum on school WES the Mobilizers

visited this school, they checked hygienic condition. The hygienic condition was not good

and also the students were looking very lazy.

When asked from the teachers about the amazing situation of children‟s, they replied that

with education it is necessary that the students must be engaged in some recreational

activities. But unluckily we have no sport ground.

We also observed that there were no furniture for the students to set in the class and they

sat in dust due to which their clothes were dirty and they were in bad hygienic condition.

The mobilizers started hygiene sessions with students regularly.

When the mobilizers went to the school to form SEC, at the occasion they invited the

parents of the students. They mobilized their parents that recreational activities are very

necessary for your children along with education. They were told that with these activities

the students would be fit and healthy.

They also took a hygiene session with the parents and then realized them that in this school

the students have no desks for setting and they set on earth in dust, due to which the

hygienic condition is very bad. Due to improper hygiene they would be ill.

activities are essential that keep children active so sport ground must be in school. So the

parents collectively prepared a sports ground for the school students.

2: Majority of the parents bought chairs for school.

After some days the mobilizers visited the school and found the students setting on chairs

    in a good hygienic condition.

    Output:

A ground has been prepared collectively and now the students play in the ground.

Due to the availability of Furniture the hygienic condition of students improved.
