ABSTRACTS Therapy of verrucosis generalisata with interferon and Tigason (German text) Thiele B, Mabrle G, Schuff-Werner P, et al: Z Hautkr 60:929-937, 1985 A 17-year-old female patient with generalized verrucosis showed immunologically reduced numbers ofT lymphocytes, particularly helper T cells. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analysis demonstrated an infection with HPV type 2. Three brothers of the patient also showed a slight reduction of helper T cells. Treatment of the verrucosis with topical retinoic acid was ineffective. Treatment with et-interferon intramuscularly and intralesionally showed an improvement only within the first 14 days of treatment. Subsequent treatment with etreti- nate (Tigason, Europe; Tegison, USA), 50 and 75 mg on alternate days, achieved flattening but not healing of warts. The flattened warts still showed virus-DNA. Retinoids seem to influence only the virus-caused acanthosis and hyperker- atosis. For 10 months he received etretinate, 0.8 mg/kg daily, and oral pho- tochemotherapy three times weekly. Thereafter, he was treated with etretinate only, 0,3-0.8 mg/kg daily. This main- tenance treatment kept the patient almost free of manifes- tations.
