WelcomeWelcome to postgraduate study at Aberystwyth. The University is the oldest in Wales with a long history of academic excellence. We also pride ourselves on the quality of student experience regularly featuring at or near the top of national and international polls on student satisfaction. Aberystwyth is a vibrant university town in a stunning rural location, with a dynamic social and cultural life centring around the University. Our Arts Centre is nationally significant with live performances, exhibitions, courses and cinema, while the National Library of Wales, which is adjacent to the main University campus, is one of the great libraries of the world and is one of only five copyright libraries in the UK.

For postgraduates we offer a range of taught programmes building on our academic strengths. Some of these reflect traditional academic disciplines, but others offer new and sometimes unique combinations. All are taught to the very highest standards but also offer significant scope for students to develop independent and innovative ways of thinking. Postgraduate study at AberystwythExcellence in Research

Aberystwyth provides you with a well-balanced range of academic interests in three faculties: Arts, Social Sciences and Science. A myriad of individual research opportunities can lead to the award of an MPhil or PhD degree. We also offer an extensive selection of taught postgraduate programmes leading to certificates, diplomas and Master’s qualifications.

The University’s reputation for its research is greatly assisted by the location in the town of a number of national research facilities and organisations including: the National Library of Wales, the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies, the British Geological Survey, the Royal Commission for Ancient Monuments (Wales), and the Aberystwyth Science Park.

Research ExcellenceAberystwyth University was very successful in the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008. The results show that 85% of research activity submitted by the University is of an international standard, with world leading research identified in 15 of the 16 subject areas submitted. These mean that Aberystwyth is now second only to Cardiff University in Wales for quality of research according to two leading publications, the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) and Research Fortnight. The Research Fortnight RAE2008 Quality Index of University Research places Aberystwyth 41st out of 119 in the UK, and according to the THES Aberystwyth University has climbed 15 places to 45th out of a total of 132 Universities.

The findings also reveal that 48% of research activity at Aberystwyth University is rated as world leading or internationally excellent and 97.4% of researchers work in disciplines where world leading research is undertaken.

Five academic departments (1 in 3 of submissions) had over 60% of their research activity rated 4* or 3*.

The Department of International Politics has continued on from its outstanding result in 2001 when it secured the highest grade possible, 5*. With 40% of its research rated as ‘world-leading’, the Department is 3rd in the THES RAE Subject Ratings for Politics and International studies, ahead of Oxford and the London School of Economics. It is also the second highest performing social science department in the whole of Wales.

With 70% of research submitted being world leading or internationally excellent the Department of Computer Science is Wales’ leading department in Computer Science and Informatics. The THES RAE Subject Ratings place it joint 16th in the UK out of 81.

65% of the research submitted by the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences (IGES) is world leading or internationally excellent. According to the THES RAE Subject Ratings IGES is joint 11th in the UK out of 49.

Following its 5* performance in the 2001 RAE, and with 65% of research submitted being world-leading or internationally excellent in RAE2008, the Department of Welsh has retained its place amongst the top four in the UK.

5A 5 in the 2001 RAE established the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies as one of the leading departments of its kind in the UK. With 30% of research submitted being world leading and 30% being internationally excellent, the Department has underlined its reputation and to Research Fortnight’s ‘Research Power’ league table, is ranked 2nd in the UK.

The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences is joint 6th out of 30 in the UK. 95% of research submitted is rated as being recognised internationally with 45% being world leading or internationally excellent.

The Department of Information Studies is 11th out of 21 in the UK. 85% of the research submitted is rated as being recognised internationally with 50% being world leading or internationally excellent.

Submitted under the European Studies unit of assessment, the Department of European Languages is joint 8th out of 27 in the UK. 80% of the research submitted is rated as being recognised internationally with 20% being world leading.

80% of research submitted by the Department of History and Welsh History is rated as being recognised internationally with 45% being world leading or internationally excellent.

95% of research submitted by the Department of English and Creative Writing is rated as being recognised internationally with 40% being world leading or internationally excellent.

The Institute of Mathematics and Physics submitted research under two units of assessment, Physics and Pure Mathematics. 85% of research in Pure Mathematics is rated as being recognised internationally with 40% being world-leading or internationally excellent. 70% of Physics research submitted is rated as being recognised internationally.

65% of research submitted by the Department of Law and Criminology is rated as being recognised internationally with 35% being world-leading or internationally excellent.

Research from The School of Art was submitted under the History of Art, Architecture and Design unit of assessment. 65% of the work is rated as being recognised internationally with 25% being world-leading or internationally excellent.

60% of research submitted by the School of Management and Business is rated as being recognised internationally with 25% being of internationally excellent.

The Department of Sports and Exercise Science which was returned for the first time since its formation in 2001 performed very well with 65% of research submitted rated as being recognised internationally with 15% being of international excellence.

Modes of Postgraduate StudyFull-timeAberystwyth offers an exceptional residential academic experience if you wish to pursue full-time study. Students with study leave from employment or considering higher education as part of a career change will find it easier to devote themselves to their studies in Aberystwyth’s academic environment.

Part-timeMany of our postgraduate courses may be studied on a part-time basis so that you may continue your career and studies. Part-time research students (LLM by research, MPhil, and PhD) do not normally have to be resident in Aberystwyth. Attendance requirements are determined by the relevant Head of Department. Where feasible, part-time research students are encouraged to attend the University’s Research Training Modules.

Distance Learning[Information Studies and Law only]Distance Learning is a term used to describe an alternative method of delivering taught courses through study packs and study schools as opposed to the traditional lecture or seminar-based method.

Our distance learning courses allow you to study for higher degrees without leaving your job or home, except to attend short residential study schools. This approach to learning encourages students to be highly motivated, to take responsibility for their own learning, and to manage their time effectively.

External or Split Research DegreesWe can be flexible to enable you to carry out research at your place of employment, either because you want to examine a subject with particular relevance to your career or employer, or to access specialist equipment or resources (for example corporate archives) that the University does not have.

This sort of programme is often particularly attractive to overseas academics who want to upgrade their educational qualifications without leaving their university posts.

Visiting Students and Non-qualification Postgraduate StudyThe University takes a very pragmatic approach to requests by individuals to attend the institution as visiting students. Consequently, all requests are welcomed and details will be finalised by the Postgraduate Admissions Office and the relevant Department.

Many of our taught courses are designed with a view to meeting current employment needs. The different modes of study described above exist to accommodate and complement individual career paths. Research students may have external supervisors in addition to those in the institution. This will ensure that you will receive advice and direction relevant to a future career.

As there is no airport in the town of Aberystwyth itself you are advised to try and fly into Birmingham or Manchester International Airports. There is a direct train service linking Birmingham International airport with Aberystwyth which takes approximately 3 hours. There are also regular train and bus links from London to Aberystwyth.

In addition, a special international induction week is organised for international students at the start of the academic year. Here you will meet staff, students and other new international students.

Academic support is provided for each student by a research supervisor or course coordinator. Many departments also have a director of postgraduate studies.

International Pathways/English Language CoursesTarget English www.aber.ac.uk/en/international-english/courses/ipp/teThis full-time course is designed for students who have not yet fulfilled the language requirements for university entry. Students can join for three, six or nine months in order to increase their English language level before starting their postgraduate degree course.

Pre-Masters Programme www.aber.ac.uk/en/international-english/courses/ipp/pm This one-year postgraduate foundation programme prepares international students for entering a taught Masters degree at Aberystwyth. It is available for many different subjects, including Art, Law and Management. Please enquire about other subjects. The course consists of 20 hours per week of English language and academic subjects. Students who submit an application for their taught Masters at the same time as the one-year Pre-Masters will be entitled to a reduction in the standard tuition fees of the taught Masters on successful completion of the foundation programme and registration for their Masters programme.

Supporting your StudiesDuring the academic year, language and learning support can be provided for registered students. This consists of short courses, e.g. study skills, academic writing, language fluency, examination skills, and grammatical accuracy. Writing workshops are offered on a regular basis, where students can obtain individual advice on their work in progress. Personal consultations can also be arranged to help students with particular language and study difficulties.

Finance and FundingTuition Fees and Maintenance CostsFees cover the cost of your tuition, registration, examinations (but not resits) and graduation. Living costs are additional but very affordable in Aberystwyth. Use the following information to help plan your finances for postgraduate study.

How much will my course cost?The University’s tuition fees are normally fixed at yearly intervals. The 2012/2013 fees will be confirmed in March 2012. As a guide only, the normal fees for full-time postgraduate students (home and EU) for 2011 are stated below. UK Island residents (Isle of Man, Guernsey, etc) do not pay the same level of fees as other UK students and should refer to the website for further details.

International students are required to pay the full costs of their tuition in the UK and each university sets its own international fees. Aberystwyth aims to set its fees at a very competitive rate. Fees for most of Aberystwyth’s postgraduate programmes for 2011 can be seen in the table below.

Additional Course FeesOn some courses there are additional charges for field trips and use of additional resources, these are in line with the practice of departments in other UK universities. Further information can be found on our departmental web pages, or by contacting departments directly.

Research Support FeesSome MPhil/PhD projects at the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences use animals and/or large amounts of materials or ‘consumables’. In these cases you may be charged a supplementary fee of up to £3000 per annum to help cover these costs. The fee will normally be stated in your offer letter. Where the cost of materials is exceptional, your department will contact you to outline the costs.

Payment of FeesThe University has developed payment plan options designed to make thefeepaymentprocessassimpleandflexibleaspossible.Normallypayment of tuition fees is required in full, for the coming session, upon registration. However, arrangements can be made for self-supporting students to pay their tuition fees in instalments by Direct Debit, either by three termly payments or a maximum of seven monthly payments fromNovembertoMay.

Students starting part way through an academic year will pay pro-rata for that academic year.

Important note about feesWhen you accept the offer of a place, you are also accepting responsibility for the payment of your tuition fees, even if you are sponsored or in receipt of an award and the sponsor fails to pay. It is therefore very important that you have sufficient funds available to you. Financial SupportThe majority of students entering postgraduate study will be self-funding. The different ways in which you finance your studies is known as your ‘Funding Portfolio’. These can consist of earnings from full-time or part-time work, grants, bursaries, employer contributions and savings.

It is important that you have sufficient financial provision before you embark on your programme of study. You should consider applying for charitable trusts and grants a year in advance, research funding applications are usually due in early spring.

UK and other EU StudentsAberystwyth Postgraduate Research Studentships (APRS)These highly sought studentships provide for three years of UK/EU tuition fees, a yearly maintenance grant (approximately £13,590 in 2011) and access to a travel/conference fund. Applying for Research Council fundingBefore you apply for Research Council or DEFRA funding you must have an offer of a place at Aberystwyth. To be eligible you must be a UK or EU fee payer and have a first class or upper second class honours degree. If you are eligible you should first ask the department that you wish to enter whether it has any such awards allocated to it. Aberystwyth has a number of block grants and these are detailed on our website. If the department accepts you, the staff will guide you through the funding application procedure.

Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE Teacher Training)Unlike other postgraduate programmes, UK and other EU students on the PGCE may apply for a government loan to cover the cost of their tuition fees. Some of these students are also entitled to tax-free bursaries, which are known as training grants. In 2011/ 2012, in Wales, these are: Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Welsh £9,000; and French, German, Spanish, Biology, combined/general science £6,000. Self-funding your Studies – Professional and Career Development LoansProfessional and Career Development Loans are bank loans that can be used to help pay for work-related learning. You can borrow between £300 and £10,000 to help support the cost of up to two years of learning (or three years if it includes one year’s relevant unpaid practical work). The loans are interest free until up to one month after the end of the course but interest is payable after that date. They can be used to pay course fees or other costs such as travel and living expenses. You can also use the loan to supplement other forms of support such as grants or bursaries.

International StudentsAberystwyth International Excellence ScholarshipsThese awards are available for full-time international students on taught Masters courses. Up to 51 scholarships, each worth between £2,000 or £3,000 towards tuition fees will be available for courses commencing in September 2012. Employability and Careers The Careers Advisory Service exists to provide an excellent and supportive service which enables individual students and graduates to realise their aspirations, make informed life choices and achieve their potential. Careers staff work closely with all academic departments and participate in career development sessions scheduled into academic modules. You are entitled to use the Service both during and after your studies, but obviously the sooner you make contact the better – especially if you are on a one-year course.

Career PlanningWhether you have a clear view of your future or not, you may find that a confidential, unbiased discussion with a careers adviser will help you to move forwards in the right direction for you.

Skills DevelopmentA varied events programme offering practical workshops on skills development and career management, as well as talks about particular career opportunities, is offered in both semesters, and you may also find it useful to sit a series of online psychometric (aptitude) tests similar to those used by many employers as part of their selection processes. In addition to its own programme, the Careers Service also contributes to the Postgraduate Skills Training Programme run by the Office of Postgraduate Studies.

The Careers Service website has information on a wide range of events and services as well as vacancies for part-time, vacation and graduate jobs. It provides useful links to a number of employer and graduate recruitment sites, together with occupational information and useful advice on career management. You may also find it helpful to use Prospects Planner, an online careers guidance system with information on over 400 graduate occupations, which will help you to articulate your skills, interests and motivations and match them up with possible career options.

Researching Different Careers and EmployersA well-stocked Careers Library is also available, with specialist training videos and a series of free booklets covering a range of postgraduate options and other occupational and careers management information as well as a variety of other reference and publications. For graduate and part-time (including term-time) vacancies, register with JobLink (next to the shop in the Students’ Union) or search the on-line vacancy database.

Work ExperienceIt is increasingly important to obtain work experience during your studies – and work experience focussed on a particular occupational or professional area is even more valuable. In addition to offering advice on finding and applying for internships, help is available to find work placements and ‘tasters’ with Welsh businesses advertised through GO Wales.

As part of the Access to Masters (ATM) programme funded by the European Social Fund, Aberystwyth has a number of scholarships available for students embarking on taught Masters courses. Places are linked to an external partner company and each Masters student undertakes a placement and typically completes a dissertation project with the organisation.

Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS) also offer excellent opportunities for working with business and support research projects that match academic expertise with business-focused research needs. KESS Mini links a one-year research project to an MPhil qualification and KESS Maxi links a three-year research project to a PhD.

The Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) scheme is a programme supported by the government and run by the Technology Strategy Board. A typical KTP involves at least one Associate (a graduate), employed by the University, to work within a company on a specific project of mutual benefit. The Associate is supervised by an academic mentor from the institution as well as an employee of the company. The KTP may last up to 3 years and could lead to longer term employment.

Even with postgraduate qualifications, however, the process of identifying, finding and securing the right job can be far from straight forward. Careers Advisers are available everyday on a drop-in or pre-booked basis to help you make the most of your time at Aberystwyth. They will also help you to formulate a job-seeking strategy which will make the best use of your academic and transferable skills, your interests and motivations - and the time you have available.

AccommodationValue for money accommodation at Aberystwyth starts at £78 per week, and all study bedrooms have free internet connection. As all the accommodation is convenient to campus: there is no need for costly commuting. Also, there are flats and houses exclusively for postgraduates which will help you to have regular contact with other postgraduate students.

ResidencesWherever possible, we put postgraduate students together. The residences available to postgraduates are self-catering (one is en-suite) and range from town-based accommodation to houses adjacent to campus. Full details of the residences and the licence periods will be sent to postgraduates on application. The University’s Accommodation Office will assist you with any difficulties that might arise. The three main postgraduate residences are:

Clarendon HouseClarendon House is located on the seafront and is a postgraduate only self-catering residence. It has single en-suite bedrooms in flats of 4 to 10 people. There is internet access in each room and there are laundry facilities nearby. Kitchen facilities are shared. Some rooms have a spectacular sea view. Pentre Jane MorganPentreJaneMorgan,theStudentVillage,islocatednexttothemaincampus. It has single rooms in houses of 5 or 6 people, with the bathroom and kitchen areas shared. There is internet access in each room and there are laundry facilities on site. PJM Lounge provides computers, Wi-Fi access, group study areas, ‘easy’ furniture to chill out and a vending service. BrynderwBrynderw is located close to the town centre and offers self-catering single rooms in flats of 4 to 6 people. Bathroom and kitchen facilities are shared. There is internet access in each room. Fees for the year, based on 2011/12 prices, were £78.07 per week (rounded weekly equivalent).

Seafront ResidencesThe University-managed seafront residences - comprising Aberglasney, Balmoral, Blaenwern, Caerleon, Carpenter, Ceredigion, Glyndwr, Gwerin, and Pumlumon - have all been refurbished and offer well-equipped single room accommodation in self-catering flats of varying sizes. All rooms have computer network connections. Fees for the year, based on 2011/12 prices, were £88.96 per week (rounded weekly equivalent).

The Private SectorAberystwyth is a vibrant town throughout the year and offers students the opportunity to live in private accommodation in the town centre or in the surrounding villages. Family AccommodationIf you are planning to bring your family with you to Aberystwyth, it is recommended that you make enquiries as early as possible. Families and couples can find accommodation in the private sector and you can expect to pay from £150 per week and upwards for a two-bedroom house. The University owns and manages a few flats for student couples and these are let on a first-come first-served basis.

The TownAberystwyth has a population of about 13,000 people, but serves a wider local population of about 27,000. As the main market centre for mid and west Wales, it offers many modern retail outlets, and is easily accessible by road and rail. However, Aberystwyth is not just a pleasant market town, it is very much a university town too. The University has a long and fruitful relationship with the town and students are welcomed by residents.

Aberystwyth offers a variety of activities to suit every taste. If you fancy a quiet meal, why not dine in one of the variety of restaurants and cosmopolitan eateries in the town? Choose from French, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Turkish, Japanese, Italian, Greek, Spanish and Welsh cuisine. Don’t forget that there are plenty of pubs and clubs in town, to suit all tastes. Whether you’re after a quiet drink, or are out for the night, most of the pubs have late licences and many also have live bands playing regularly.

The unspoilt countryside around the University abounds in natural attractions with many opportunities for outdoor activities. The University CampusThe main campus, Penglais, is one of the finest and probably the most spectacularly located in Britain. Situated on Penglais Hill, it enjoys panoramic views of the coast and the Irish Sea. The Llanbadarn campusalsoenjoysanelevatedpositionoverlookingtheValeof Rheidol and the coast. On the seafront is the original home of the University, the Old College. This now houses two academic departments and some of the University’s administration.

The proximity of the town to the campuses means that everything is within walking distance. For students, it is only a short walk from the halls of residence, to their departments, to the sports facilities, and to the town centre without time-consuming and costly commuting.
