Notes:Elegant: to be graceful, refined and dignified in tastes, habits, style or design
Fencing: the art or practice of defense and attack with a sword
Jigging: a quick dance with leaping and kicking motions
Kale: a form of cabbage, which can be green or purple
Karate: a type of Japanese martial art
Limboing: a type of dance where the dancer leans backward and dances under a horizontal pole without touching it or the floor
Meditating: To keep the mind in a state of contemplation; to think seriously
Queasy: to feel unwell
Quiche (keesh): a baked dish made from eggs and milk in a pastry crust often including meat, vegetables, or cheese
Serenading: to sing, specifically to someone
Udon (oo-don): a type of thick wheat-flour noodle popular in Japanese cuisine
Vaudeville: a theatrical genre of variety entertainment in the United States and Canada from the early 1880s until the early 1930s.
Xocolatl (sho-ko-laht): the Aztec word for chocolate
Ziti: a type of pasta
Simple Quiche
Ingredients:3 eggs1 ½ cup 2% milk1/4 tsp. salt1/4 tsp. black pepper6 oz. shredded cheddar cheese1 cup chopped onion1 pie shell
Directions:Lightly beat eggs then add the rest of the ingredients. Mix and pour into pie shell.Cook at 325 degrees for 30-45 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
Udon Noodle Soup To make the noodles:1 cup rice flour 1/2 cup tapioca starch 3/4 cup warm water
1. Combine rice flour and tapioca starch in a bowl and mix thoroughly. Gently pour hot water onto the flour and mix until it’s thoroughly combined (if using an electric mixer, mix at high speed for 2-3 minutes). On a flat surface, dust with tapioca starch and flatten the flour mixture with a rolling pin. Cut into 1/4 inch wide noodles (a pizza cutter works well).
2. Bring water to a boil in a soup pot and cook the noodles for 4-5 minutes (the noodles will float when they’re done). Lift noodles out with strainer and set aside.
To make the soup: 4 cans chicken broth (or use homemade) 1 cooked chicken breast, shredded1 stalk green onion (sliced) 1/4 cup sliced cilantro 1 teaspoon fried garlic (optional) 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
In a soup pot, add the chicken broth and bring to a boil. Stir in the cooked chicken, the noodles, and the rest of the ingredients and ladle into bowls. Serves four.
Italian Fig CookiesIngredients:1 cup white sugar1/2 cup butter1 egg2 cups all-purpose flour1 teaspoon baking soda1 teaspoon baking powder1/2 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon ground cloves1 cup chopped fresh figs1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Directions:Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream sugar and butter and add beaten egg. Sift dry ingredients and blend with creamed mixture. Fold in figs and nuts. Drop cookie by tablespoonfuls on greased sheet. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Yield: Two Dozen (if you drop with a tablespoon)
