DESCRIPTION
A representation of Abby Balik's work as a graphic designer and communications professional.

Abby Balik& communications
“design is so difficult because it is so simple.”
BEGINNINGS I was once told, design is so difficult because it is so simple. Understanding the power words and images can possess has been a driving force behind my ambitions. My evolution as a graphic designer and communicator is influenced by a combination of life and work experiences. The following is a representation of the skills, concepts and aesthetic eye I have developed as an emerging professional.
THE BASICS as a communIcatIons professIonal, learning to be direct, concise, and affective are essential characteristics that determine success from failure. The challenge of achieving affective communication with graphics, images and art became an interest that grew stronger through my undergraduate experience. During this time, I learned the importance of strategic planning and how to use industry standard software.

B. seLf Promotion PostcArDs (set of 7). Photoshop, InDesign. 7.2”x 4.5” Created 12.11.2007. The concept for this self promotion piece was to create a tangible representation of my skills that reflects my personality. Rather than leaving a business card with a potential employer, this set of postcards serves as a personal reminder of my work.

The challenge of achieving affective communication with graphics, images and art became an interest that grew stronger through my undergraduate experience. During this time, I learned the importance of strategic planning and how to use industry standard software.

over my last colllege semester, I worked with a team of my peers to develop and pitch a proposed social media campaign for a local chamber of commerce. I was appointed Creative Director to supervise the visibility initiatives. The planning involved a tiered system of development through three distinct phases.
i. monthLy mAiLer PostcArD. Illustrator, InDesign. 6”x4” Created 04.21.2009. In order to drive members to social media and Web 2.0 outlets, traditional mail newsletters were converted to an e-newsletter campaign. To inform members, this postcard was created and pitched as a“going green” effort.

ART ADMINISTRATION workIng for an art center, my visual communication skills and creativity are tested daily to produce marketing, promotional, and advertising materials at a grass-roots level. The area of non-profit art administration requires working with limited resources and relying on innovation; a lesson that cannot be taught in a classroom or found in a book.
