Automation solutions for high andmedium voltage substationsA typical ABB substation automation system forhigh or medium voltage includes substation con-trol, communication gateways, an inter-bay bus,bay control and protection. A total solutionwould be a system providing all protection, con-trol, monitoring, and local and remote commu-nication functions. At station level, it would alsoinclude independent operator workstations andremote control gateways. At process level, itwould include a process bus option for remoteI/Os and advanced sensors and actuators.
The communication gateway carries the in-formation exchange with the network controlcenter. The interbay bus conducts the dataexchange between station and bay levels andbetween bays. Bay level units communicate withthe process and perform control, protection,monitoring, and communication functions at theprocess level. Protection and control units can bemounted in cubicles or integrated directly intothe switchgear, thus saving engineering, space,and wiring.
Microprocessors enable several protection andcontrol functions to be combined into one intel-ligent terminal, while maintaining with the auton-omy of bay level functions and devices. Self-

supervision on all levels of all functions in-creases not only reliability and availability, butalso enables the maintenance of both primaryand secondary equipment to stage down tomaintenance on demand.
Moving intelligence closer to theprocessThe most recent developments in advanced sen-sor, actuator and process bus technology havestarted to replace the conventional current andvoltage transformers, drive mechanisms, statusindicators, and most of the electrical wiring atleast for new substations with advancedswitchgear.Moving the intelligence into the high voltageequipment creates a system in which processingunits at station, bay and primary process levelsmonitor the vital parts of the substation as closeto the process as possible.
