ெமய எ�த்�க் | Literally the body letters | The Consonants
In the third lesson we will start to learn the consonants. In
Tamil, as we saw in the
first two lessons, the vowels are called soul letters and we now
learn that the consonants are
called the body letters. So when you combine the soul and body
i.e., vowels and consonants
one forms the language or life of the language (pretty neat,
isn’t it?). In Tamil the consonants
I am introducing in this lesson are slightly different from the
consonants you know in English.
The English-equivalent consonants will be introduced in the
fourth lesson. I will now introduce
all eighteen (18) consonants in this and next pages with columns
for the Tamil letter, its
English pronunciation, Tamil word, the same word transliterated
in English, word equivalent in
English, and a picture of the word. In Tamil language words can
start words, verbs, and
nouns with vowels but not with these consonants, more about this
in the fourth lesson. If you
