A Year of Health Literacy: One Organization Makes Awareness, Education, and Application a Priority Sydney Webb, Ph.D. and Erin R. King, Member Communications & Engagement Team, Nurtur Health, Inc. Starting in 2012, the Member Communications and Engagement Team at Nurtur made a concerted effort to make health literacy a priority. To do this, the team conducted extensive research on the topic by reviewing academic, trade, and government publications. This research led to the development of a best practices guide, perspective paper, and checklist to test all Nurtur-produced member materials. Additionally, we recognized a need to train our colleagues across the organization on the subject, which was done via webinar. As a result of the webinar, health literacy has become a necessity at Nurtur. As an organization we work with our members to ensure they not only understand difficult health information, but can act on the information by making small behavior changes that lead to big results. We have gained momentum over the years in creating awareness and educating colleagues about health literacy, as well as applying health literacy concepts. Our progress in the field is evidenced by the increased number of projects planned in 2014. Likewise, the culmination of efforts has not only ignited interest, but has contributed to a number of employees championing health literacy as a means of better supporting Nurtur’s members.
