The 40-year-old Bilambil Heights resident recently accepted the position, shortly before travelling to the US where he successfully defended his world title in the Olympic distance championships.

Murwillumbah’s main street drainage upgrade continues this week, with crews working to complete all work to the Queensland Road intersection and in Police Lane.

Then, they will resume laying the last 20 metres of drainage and water reticulation pipes up main street to just shy of the pedestrian crossing near Mt St Patrick’s College.

Some water reticulation pipes need to be replaced and optic fibre conduit laid in Queensland Road and Bent Street. These works will be undertaken with traffic management in place.

Weather permitting, the upgrade is on track to be complete by mid November.Last week crews focused on constructing several pits on the southern side

of Murwillumbah Street and at the northern end of Police Lane. They also constructed the kerb, gutter and footpath up to the Fire Station and began preparing the road for resurfacing.

Changed traffic conditions remain in place. Main Street, from Brisbane Street to Queensland Road, is one-way westbound with stop / slow flagmen managing traffic around the worksite at the Queensland Road intersection. Police Lane is closed except to police traffic. When work starts in Queensland Road and Bent Street, stop / slow flagmen will be in place to manage traffic.

Ganger Stephen Day (left), plant operator Steve Chapman, Wayne Cotmore and Rowan Wilson prepare a temporary surface at the northern end of Police Lane in preparation for opening the lane to traffic.

Healthy AGEING INFOOLDER ROAD USERS - NRMA YEARS AHEAD PROGRAMThe road ahead can be less daunting for older road users in the Tweed, with a free program being offered to provide safe driving tips, explain commonly misunderstood rules and provide information on licensing legislation.

A presenter from National Roads and Motorists Association (NRMA) will discuss issues affecting older drivers. This free program has been delivered across NSW over the past 10 years, where it has been recognised for being highly relevant, informative and reassuring.

The key to staying on the road is self regualtion and awareness of the factors that can impact driving. Changes to health that can come with age, such as vision impairment, dementia and increased medications can affect the abilities of road users.

Self regulation can include adjusting your driving patterns to avoid situations where you feel unsafe. This may include not driving at night, in poor weather or during peak times.

All drivers over the age of 75 must pass yearly medical checks to continue driving. Drivers aged 85 can choose to retain an unrestricted license by taking an on-road driving assessment every two years or obtain a modified license without a formal test.

The modified license allows driving at certain times and distances in a local area to access the services needed, such as shopping, community activities and medical appointments.

The older driver’s session will be held at the Seniors Information Hub at Banora Point Community Centre on Monday 23 November 1:45-2:45pm. Topics covered include:• Changes to NSW legislation • Vehicle safety• Pedestrian safety • Mobility alternatives• Safe driving tips and commonly misunderstood road rules • Physical fitness and driving

A state-of-the-art adjustable change table has been installed at Murwillumbah’s Tweed Regional Aquatic Centre (TRAC), further improving accessible facilities for patrons.

Aquatic centre users with restricted mobility will now be able to change in comfort because of the new table, which will also benefit carers and family members who assist with changing.

The change table was purchased using Tweed Shire Council’s Access Funds, following advice from Council’s Equal Access Advisory Committee, and is in line with Council’s Access and Inclusion Plan.

Council’s Community Development Officer - Ageing and Disability, Karen Collins, said the change table would make a huge difference for people with significant disabilities and chronic conditions.

“The table is height-adjustable and designed for showering as well. This means people who need assistance to change and shower can use the pool facilities like anyone else,” Ms Collins said.

“For some people, aqua therapy is essential for physical and mental wellbeing.”For more information on accessibility visit www.tweed.nsw.gov.au/Disabilities
