The complex geography of the region combined with climatic factors has lead to the evolution of many diverse habitats, which support a staggering diversity of birds including many endemic species. Some 1,600 species have been recorded for the eight political departments of the northern route, including 75 globally threatened species and 140 restricted-range species from 10 endemic bird areas.
