February 4: Arusha / Eastern Serengeti Nature RefugeAfter breakfast, fly to the Eastern SerengetiNature Refuge, 12,000-plus acres of wildernessdeep within the Serengeti eco-system and exclusively for Thomson Safaris travelers. Explore its diverse wildlife and stunning savanna for mammals and birds by foot andvehicle. Amongst other species this is a greatarea to see Fischers Lovebird, Red-throatedTit, Buff-bellied Warbler, Marico Sunbirdand Usambiro Barbet. Along the way, visit anauthentic Maasai village. February 5: Eastern Serengeti Nature RefugeContinue to bird and wildlife view todaywith time for your new Maasai friends tovisit you at your Nyumba (camp). February 6: Serengeti National ParkAfter breakfast, drive inside Serengeti National Park, where you will take a breakfrom your active pursuits and enjoy more traditional wildlife viewing drives. The varietyand quantity of animals on these plains is incredible: impala, topi, crocodile, hippo, giraffe, hyena, wildebeest, lion, ostrich, andso much more. In addition, there are a numberof bird species that only occur in westernSerengeti, these include; Darn-chantingGoshawk, Grey-backed Shrike and in thewestern corridor; the colorful Black-headedGonolek, Eastern-Grey plantain eater, andthe exceedingly rare Karamoja Apalis.Thomson Serengeti Nyumba at Elmakati (All meals included)

February 7: Serengeti National ParkSpend another day exploring the greatSerengeti. Beyond the heralded migration ofwildebeest and zebra, the Serengeti is bestknown for its predators, including cheetahand leopard, as well as large prides of lionand clans of hyena. February 8: Oldupai Gorge & Ngorongoro HighlandsAfter an early wake-up call, stop at the famedOldupai Gorge, where some of the earliest remains of the human species were unearthedby the renowned Leakey family. Marc Baker is a professionalnaturalist with a broad under-standing of Africa’s environ-ments, wildlife, people, andhistory. Born in England in1970, Marc first came toAfrica in 1977 with his familyto live in the Wadi Kuf Na-

tional Park, Libya. It was here in the mountainsof the Al Maj that his love of open spaces andwildlife began. Returning home to Tanzania,Marc took up a position with the United Nations conservation project, working through-out East Africa. Then, as a private consultant,Marc became involved in a variety of projects,ranging from aerial surveys over the vast wet-lands of western Tanzania, to the ecology of forest birds in Zanzibar’s Jozani forest. Marc isnow a member of the Professional Safari Guides,an association of the best safari guides in Tanzania. Marc is also an executive committeemember of the Wildlife Conservation Society ofTanzania, the African Bird Club and TanzanianAssociation of Foresters; he has published several scientific papers and popular articles on travel and wildlife in Tanzania. When he’s not guiding, Marc is a regular contributor to the Tanzanian Bird Atlas, Tanzanian Ringing Scheme and the recently formed CarnivoreMonitoring database.

Wayne Petersen is MassAudubon’s director of theMassachusetts Important BirdAreas (IBA) program. He hasled trips and tours, lectured,and conducted birding work-shops across North Americafor over 35 years. His tour

leading experiences have taken him from arcticCanada to South America, Antarctica, Iceland,Africa, Madagascar, and New Zealand. Waynechairs the Massachusetts Avian Records Committee, is a New England Regional Editorfor North American Birds, and serves on the advisory committee for the Massachusetts Nat-ural Heritage and Endangered Species Program.His writing projects include co-authoring Birdsof Massachusetts (with Richard Veit), co-editingthe Massachusetts Breeding Bird Atlas (withRoger Meservey), contributing to The AudubonSociety Master Guide to Birding, and The SibleyGuide to Bird Life & Behavior, and writing the National Audubon Society’s Pocket Guide toSongbirds and Familiar Backyard Birds (East), andBirds of New England (with Roger Burrows).Wayne is especially interested in seabirds andshorebirds and he derives great satisfactionfrom sharing his knowledge of the natural worldwith his fellow traveling companions.

February 9: Ngorongoro CraterSpend the whole day exploring the remark-able crater floor, which lies an astounding2,000 feet below the rim. Look for massivebull elephants roaming the plains, hipposwallowing in their shallow pools, ostrich running across the savanna, and much, muchmore. The variety and sheer number of animals who inhabit this beautiful oasis areastounding. After wildlife viewing, return toyour lodge for dinner and a relaxing evening. February 10: Lake Manyara National ParkAwaken to the dawn chorus of local birdlife,with tea and coffee served on your private verandah. After a leisurely breakfast, visitLake Manyara National Park, which is hometo spectacular wildlife where you can spotelephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, giraffe, andbaboon. At the lake, watch for hippos and anarray of birds, including hundreds of thou-sands of Flamingos, huge flocks of Pelican,Stork, Duck, tern, gull, heron, egret, Wader,and Ibis. The woodlands and the grassy plainssupport many coursers, such as Pratincole,pipit and swallow. The late afternoon is yoursto explore the gardens, drink a cup of tea orcoffee and take advantage of the spa servicesat Gibb’s. Tonight, enjoy a freshly cookedmeal from the organic garden and farm. February 11: Tarangire National ParkThis morning, depart for Tarangire NationalPark, where giant baobab trees and umbrellaacacias dot the rocky hills and verdant valleys.Watch for elephant, lion, cheetah, buffalo, as well as a variety of colorful birds. Morethan 300 species have been recorded in thepark, including green wood hoopoes and greenand yellow parrots. Later this afternoon, arriveat your camp for dinner. February 12: Tarangire National ParkToday enjoy your final day of wildlife viewing in Tarangire. Often known as one of the best birding destinations in EastAfrica, you will also observe some of thenearly 490 bird species in the park. February 13: Tarangire / Arusha / DepartHead back to Arusha, where you’ll visit afantastic arts center with boutique Tanzanianjewelry and crafts created by handicapped artisans using recycled materials. February 14: West Usambara MountainsAfter an early breakfast, drive to the UsambaraMountains past Lake Nyumba ya Mungu.The dry scrub land surrounding the lake isclassic Somali-Maasai Acacia-Commiphorascrub land that attracts species such as theScaly chatterer and vulturine guinea fowl.After a long drive, stretch your legs in theMkuzu forest reserve nearby your lodge inhopes to spot a Yellow throated woodlandwarbler, mountain and Shelley’s greenbul, bar tailed trogon, forest batis and mountain wagtail and, in the evening, the eagle owl andUsambara Nightjar. February 15: East Usambara MountainsEarly this morning, continue exploring thewell-forested West Usambaras followed bylunch. Then, continue onto the lowlandforests of the East Usambaras and into itscenterpiece known as the Amani Nature

Reserve, which supports a large number ofexciting forest birds including the East CoastAkalat, Chestnut-fronted Helmet shrike,Red-tailed Ant-thrush, Kretchmer’s longbill,Usambara Hyliota, and the stunning Green-headed Oriole. The area is also populated bythe gracious Angola Pied Colobus monkeys.Tonight rest your eyes for tomorrow is another busy day of wildlife viewing. Emau Hill Forest Camp (All meals included)

February 16: East Usambara MountainsContinue to explore Amani, which is themost underrated reserve in northern Tanzania,

offering an abundance of wildlife, beautifulforest scenery, and extended areas for walking. Emau Hill Forest Camp (All meals included)

February 17: PanganiStarting early, depart on the main road toDar Es Salaam, continuing onto Pangani.With its superb location, Pangani exists at themouth of the forest-fringed Pangani River,from where a scenic beach extends northwardas far as the eye can see. Spend the afternoonswimming, snorkeling or relaxing at yourbeachfront chalet. Emayani Beach Lodge (All meals included)

February 18: PanganiAfter a leisurely morning, take a canoe tripinto the mangroves of the Pangani River inhopes to spot the Mangrove Kingfisher,Malachite Kingfisher, and White BackedNight Heron. February 19 & 20: Dar Es Salaam / U.S.Have the morning and early afternoon withyour guides for one final wildlife viewing ex-cursion. CONDITIONS OF TRAVEL: Travelers will be provided an itinerary and pre-departure information. It is expected that travelers read this information prior to trip departure. Travelerswill be responsible for completing a reservation form, a personal information form, a release of liability form and a trip expectations form. Travelers will be expected to abide by the terms set forin the invoice. During the tour, travelers are asked to respect and follow the directions of theirguide and leader.

PLEASE NOTE: Thomson Safaris (TS) and Massachusetts Audubon will attempt to adhereto this itinerary as much as possible. However, certain conditions (political, climatic, environmental,cultural, or wildlife migrations) may necessitate changes in the itinerary. TS reserves the right toalter any itinerary at any time, if necessary. We will attempt to notify participants of changes asfar in advance as possible. Costs incurred by such changes will be the responsibility of the participant.
