NEIGHBORHOOD PROFILE

NEIGHBORHOOD HISTORYEATERIES COME AND GO over the years; some can last for generations and some are but a tiny blip on the city’s col-lective palate. As every good meal inevi-tably fades into a cherished memory, a legendary restaurant can also go gently into the mists of time. Fortunately, right now there’s plenty to eat in Portland. But there are a few places, long gone, that are worth remembering.

In 1973, Organ Grinder Pizza opened in a futuristic building on SE 82nd. Kids and their families delighted in the pizza and the entertainment—a huge Wurlitzer theater organ sat in the center of the res-taurant. Many a birthday was celebrated with Organ Grinder’s pizza, as music thun-dered out of the organ’s mammoth pipes. Organ Grinder shut its doors in 1996 after

many years of being one of the America’s premier “pizza ’n’ pipes” establishments.

A vacant lot sits there now, but at the corner of SE 10th and Belmont stood the Monte Carlo, an Italian restaurant that lasted for decades. In its heyday, it hosted dancing and live music nightly. Sadly the building, which also housed the Lido restaurant and an Italian mar-ket, burned down in 2002.

Genoa was long considered the acme of fine (and expensive) dining in Portland; it closed during the economic downturn in 2008, but it will be reopening with a slightly more affordable menu and a new addition in the form of Bar Accanto.

In the meantime, here are plenty of places in Southeast Portland at which you can eat right now.

Seated outside of the Lamp beside busy SE Milwaukie, ALIDA SAXON considers her last three months in Portland since returning from Pennsylvania.

Her orange VW bus has broken down, she lives in Moreland, and she has a new job cooking at Warner Pacific College. Taking everything in stride, she is quick to laugh and has an easy smile as she talks. In the bar behind her, patrons trickle into the adja-cent Aladdin Theater after a quick pre-concert dinner.

Saxon used to cook at the Lamp “for a hot minute” and she fondly remembers the intense two-hour pre-performance rushes.

“I love the whole restaurant scene,” she says, her eyes sparkling. “I love getting your ass handed to you, because when it’s done and there are no more tickets on the line I feel like I just climbed a mountain.”

She got her start cooking when she was 17 and told the chef at a country club she was working at that there were too many men in his kitchen. The next day she was working at the fryer. Now 25 years old, she’s been working her way up the line in one kitchen after another.

“It’s a love/hate thing,” she says. “But I don’t think I’ll ever stop doing it.”

Though she appreciates her collegiate cooking gig, she hopes to find herself cooking much more high-end cuisine, cooking plates that “people pay way too much for that are way too small.”

In the meantime, she’ll work on reviving her orange VW bus, while cultivating a cadre of friends and family from staff and other regulars at the Lamp. She still feels pretty new in town and claims she’d happily accept new acquaintances. A simple proposition, considering her winning smile.

Don’t fear bringing your veggie friends here: “Portland Wings,” AKA vegetarian “chicken” wings, or the “Vegeterranean” sandwich will fill them up. And if you happen to have a hankering for some old-fashioned sweet tea or state-fair-inspired deep-fried pickles or Twinkies, this would be your place.
