Who are we? San Antonio College (SAC) is one of five colleges of the Alamo Colleges Where are we? CELL @ SAC is one academic discipline in the Languages @ SAC (Oppenheimer #119) Mission statement; vision and goals (See: CELL @ SAC homepage—on the bottom) Accreditation: SAC (accredited since 1972) has regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges; CELL at SAC has national accreditation from the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation.

Student Complaint about a class: Go to OP #119. Ask for the Complaint form. You must fill out the form there. Leave it for the Department Chair.

Grades: Grading Scale:

ESLA and ENGA (credit): “A” (excellent), “B” (good), “C” (average), “D” (below average/pass), F” (failure), “I” (incomplete), “IP” (in-progress), “W” (withdrawal), and “AU” (audit).

ESL (non-credit): “A” (excellent), “B” (good), “C” (average), “F” (failure), NR= in-progress OR withdrawal

Your instructor gives you a midterm grade and a final grade. Credit students get progress during the second week of classes and during mid semester as well. Ask your instructor for more information about them.

Passing to the next level You must receive at least a C grade to take the next level. For example: You finish GRAMMAR 0332 Grade C, B or A Register for Grammar 0342. You finish GRAMMAR 0332 Grade F, IP (NR) or W Register for Grammar 0332 again. You don’t finish GRAMMAR 0332 Grade I Speak with your professor.

Student Appeal (Complaint) -- about a final grade: Ask for the student appeal about a final grade form in OP #119.

Course survey (evaluation forms): Toward the end of each term, students receive a course survey (evaluation) form in their ACES email account for each of their courses. PLEASE COMPLETE THE FORM FOR EACH OF YOUR COURSES ELECTRONICALLY.

Computer lab: Oppenheimer #120 Information for students currently taking ESLA or ESL classes: The advisement process:

• All new students may speak with CELL@SAC Full Time Faculty.

• Group advisement takes places in YOUR class during the sixth or seventh week of each 8-week session. You learn about the classes you need for next semester.

• All level 4 students receive advisement from their level 4 professors

about the TSI exam requirement for ENGA classes. For personal advisement, go to: Services for Women & Non-Traditional Students

English for Academic Purposes (ENGA):

Qualifying: ESLA students qualify for ENGA after they pass ESLA level 4; new students qualify for ENGA by their placement score.

The TSI Referral • Ten Steps for CE ESL Level 4 Students Who Wish to Take ENGA • Determining College Readiness

At the end of each ENGA course, all ENGA students receive advisement about their college-ready status from their ENGA professors. To become college-ready, students must meet ALL requirements for ENGA Composition and Grammar and Reading and Vocabulary. Read your syllabi. Speak with your professor.

When you have completed all requirements for ENGA, you have completed the highest level at CELL @ SAC.

Go to Oppenheimer # 119. Ask for a certificate of completion (see p. 28) For information about college courses, go to Counseling and Advising.

Example of flyer for F-1 Visa Compliance Seminar held by the International Student Services. For more information about being an F-1 visa student at SAC @ CELL, contact: International Student Services

Information during the seminar includes: F-1 student responsibilities, how to maintain F-1 visa status, types of employment under USCIS, obtaining a social security card, things to do in San Antonio, etc. The seminar is planned for Thursday, January 9, 2020 at the Alamo Colleges District Operations.

The seminar will begin at 9 AM. (Additional information forthcoming)
