Founded by altruistic physicians in my hometown of Brunswick, Oasis has served hundreds of our Midcoast neighbors over its 24 years of service. Most of our patients are unable to afford insurance despite being employed, who don’t qualify for Medicaid, and simply can’t afford care. Unless and until Maine has a governor and legislature who will expand Medicaid benefits― as most states have done under the Affordable Care Act― the working poor in our community will continue to need our support to get the primary care, dental care, mental health services, and prescription drug assistance Oasis provides. We have built this organization on the foundation of generously donated services from area primary care providers, dentists, and other clinical and administrative volunteers, as well as the substantial in kind support of MidCoast-Parkview Health. These volunteer providers are the most admirable of professionals. After caring for patients all week in their own practices, they acknowledge that there is an unmet need and find a few extra hours to care for those who would otherwise go without. Our patients tell us how impactful this care is for them. Addressing dental pain and injury can mean the difference between getting to work or not. Managing a chronic disease, or helping a patient navigate the treatment necessary for a cancer diagnosis, can mean helping people get the care that they need without financial ruin. In the past year, Oasis has taken stock of its history and has planned for the future. With a generous grant from the Next Generation Foundation of Maine, we renovated our practice space and built two new state- of- the-art dental operatories. We conducted a thorough organizational assessment and added a full-time Executive Director, Anita Ruff. Anita is leading our efforts to deliver on our mission as well as to engage with the community, tell our story, and raise revenue to support our mission. We have grown our Board of Directors to gain new expertise in strategic planning, law, nonprofit management, and public health. We have built a development plan to ensure the sustainability of our organization. We are now poised with the leaders and the plans needed to assure that Oasis continues to deliver great healthcare to those most in need well into the future. It is with sincere gratitude and admiration that I thank our scores of volunteers, patients, our generous donors and grantors who have made our work possible this year. We will be challenged in the years ahead to adapt our services as the healthcare environment and our communities’ needs change. But we should take tremendous pride in the accomplishments of the past year and a half, which have strengthened Oasis, and prepared us to face the future. Founded by altruistic physicians in my hometown of Brunswick, Oasis has served hundreds of our Midcoast neighbors over its 24 years of service. Most of our patients are unable to afford insurance despite being employed, who don’t qualify for Medicaid, and simply can’t afford care. Unless and until Maine has a governor and legislature who will expand Medicaid benefits― as most states have done under the Affordable Care Act― the working poor in our community will continue to need our support to get the primary care, dental care, mental health services,

and prescription drug assistance Oasis provides.

With a generous grant from the Next Generation Foundation of Maine, we renovated our practice space and built two new state-of- the-art dental operatories.

On May 12th, the Oasis Free Clinics opened its new and expanded medical and dental clinics at 66 Baribeau Drive in Brunswick. By adding two in-house dental suites to its medical facility, Oasis is increasing free dental services for uninsured, low income adults. Currently, the dental clinic is available only to Oasis patients. We hope to include low income, non-Oasis patients later this year. The Oasis Dental Clinic specializes in urgent adult dental care.

During the opening, Andree Appel, Oasis’ Clinical Director, and Frederick Elsaesser, DDS, an Oasis dental volunteer, spoke about the Oasis history, its services and the increasing need for dental services. Bethany Beausang, a representative from U.S. Congresswoman Chellie Pingree’s office, read a letter from the Congresswoman, which expressed her appreciation for the work Oasis does. Madeline Morrison, an Oasis patient, spoke of the impact of Oasis on her health. “If it wasn’t for Oasis, I wouldn’t be here today. I didn’t know how sick I was before I came (to Oasis). They saved my life,” said Morrison.

In 2015, Oasis provided over $134,000 in free dental services to 166 patients through its bi-weekly dental clinic. With the expansion of the dental clinic, we will be able to help more people and prevent unnecessary visits to the emergency department.

The Oasis Free Clinics is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing free medical, mental health and dental care, as well as prescription assistance for uninsured, low-income residents of Freeport, Durham, Brunswick, Harpswell and Sagadahoc County (except Richmond which has a federally qualified health center). In 2015, Oasis helped 751 uninsured adults receive comprehensive primary care, mental health, and dental services. We also secured $1 million in free or reduced cost prescriptions through our Community Prescription Assistance Program.

* Oasis converted to a July-June fiscal year effective July 2016.** In addition to paid staff, Oasis benefits from nearly 7,000 hours of volunteer Physician, Dentist, and other clinical and administrative labor.*** Oasis Board of Directors made a strategic decision to invest in expansion of dental services and professional staff by using the organization’s reserves in 2016. We anticipate returning to a break even budget in FY17-18.

OUR GENEROUS DONORSThanks to the generous support of individuals, churches, businesses, foundations and the United Way, Oasis is able to provide free medical, dental, mental health and prescription assistance services to those most in need. We are humbled by and grateful for the financial support we received from Jan. 2015 ― June 2016.
