What is ECE R90?

ECE R90 is a European Standard which ensures compliance of brake pads, linings and (since 01/11/2014) brake discs, manufactured for the aftermarket for many commercial vehicles (categories M, N & O). To gain approval under these standards “interchangeable parts” must be put through a series of tests and perform to similar levels as the Original Equipment.

Winnard braking products are classed as “interchangeable”, defi ned by the ECE R90 regulations as a replacement with the same interface dimensions as the original, but which may differ from the original in terms of design, material composition and mechanical properties.

The ECE R90 standard for brake discs requires dynamometer testing along with on-vehicle testing to include:

- geometric, material & balancing provision checks- wear condition marking- integrity tests (thermal & high load)- service brake vehicle performance tests

European Member States determine individually whether & when to adopt UN ECE standards. R90 has been adopted already by Germany.

An ECE R90 standard for brake drums is anticipated later this decade.
