A Mission to Israel I f not now when? Celebrating lifecycle events is a long standing Jewish tradition. We have specific practices acknowledging births, reaching the age of maturity, joining people together and death. Acknowledging a milestone birthday has become a common tradition in our society. We celebrate the bar mitzvah at 13, driver’s license at 16, 21 is a big celebration for some. Hitting the half century mark, I was fortunate to take a milestone trip to Israel in 2015. As this was to be my first trip to Israel, I chose to travel with Temple Solel. Traveling solo is something that I have always enjoyed but this time I elected to join my community on this adventure. From the first meetings discussing the logistics of the trip and the sites we were going to visit, my enthusiasm continued to grow. At each meeting our group formed a tighter bond as we planned and reviewed the details of our trip. Arriving in Israel for the first time is very impactful, hitting all five senses at once and this impact continued throughout my entire trip. The experience of walking the streets of Jerusalem knowing the history alone can be overwhelming, even more so coupled with head turning views at every corner with people from all over the world coming to witness the confluence of the great religions of the world. It was on Ben Yehuda Street at Rabbi Linder’s favorite Kippah Man shop that I was asked why it took me so long to come to Israel and in the same breath, asking when I would be returning. The physical manifestations that you experience when taking in the Kotel for the first time are intensified with the hustle and bustle of prayer, magnified by historical significance of the surroundings. Shabbat services were a highlight as we were assigned to have Shabbat dinner with synagogue members and their families, incredible food and hospitality. A family bar mitzvah was held at the HUC Jerusalem campus on Saturday morning. A beautiful havdalah service capped our time in Jerusalem. Our visit to the Dead Sea was quite the event as we covered each other with the mineral rich mud and floated in the salt rich sea at a great spa. The beauty of Israel continued to amaze as we traveled along the Kinneret, I wanted to ask the coach to pull over and find a camping site for the night amongst the pines. With Kfar Blum as our base we traveled to the Golan and drove the abandoned battlefieldswe actually heard bombs going off in the distance as we stood in safety (thank you IDF) close to the Syrian border. An immersion in the century old mikvah at Safed was a refreshing experience literally and spiritually. Stopping briefly in Haifa to take in theBahá’í Gardens we continued on to Tel Aviv and beautiful beaches, the history of the founding of Israel at the Tel Aviv Art Museum and tour of the Ayalon Institute. Shabbat service was held on the Tel Aviv boardwalk with an impromptu Hebrew naming ceremony. On our final day in Israel we had morning Shabbat Services overlooking the Mediterranean Sea with Rae Rader reading from a beautiful Sephardic Torah. Following services I was fortunate to catch up with friends from Phoenix who made Aliyah just a few years ago and discuss their transition. Acknowledging a milestone birthday has become a common tradition in our society. We celebrate the

bar mitzvah at 13, driver’s license at 16, 21 is a big celebration for some. Hitting the half century mark, I was fortunate to take a milestone trip to Israel in 2015. A s I write this, we are still in the midst of Passover. Looking ahead in the Jewish calendar, I noticed that there is a Pesach Sheni, a second Passover, that happens during the month of May. As I dug a little further into why this would be the case, I found that our

tradition builds the opportunity for second chances right into the framework of our religion. Apparently, a year after the Exodus on the 14th of Nisan, the Israelites were commanded to bring the Passover offering just as they had done the previous year. There were some among the group who were unable to complete this commandment due to circumstances such as becoming ritually impure by coming into contact with a dead body.

Rather than miss out on this opportunity, these individuals approached Moses and Aaron and asked for a second chance, a chance to redeem themselves. In response, Pesach Sheni was created on the 14th of Iyar (the following month). According to our sages, this means that through the process of teshuvah (returning) it is never too late for one to complete one’s responsibilities and that we are never ‘lost cases’ in the Jewish community.

This year, Pesach Sheni takes place on May 10. We get another chance to eat matzah and to reflect on how fortunate we are to be part of such a wonderful tradition.

Blooms with

ample sunlight and water.

Y om Ha’Atzma’ut, Israel Independence Day (also known as Israel’s birthday in the preschool world) is May 2. This is one of our favorite days at The Solel Preschool! This year we are bringing the holiday to life for our

students with a week of joyous celebration and activity. Our goal is to build a connection to Israel for our students and help them to learn about the country and experience a taste of Israeli life here at Solel.

We will start our week with boarding an imaginary flight to Israel, complete with an in-flight movie and snack. We will go through Passport Authority and get stamps in our passports. When we land, we will hear HaTikvah, Israel’s National Anthem.

Upcoming Dates to Remember: May 1-5: Yom Ha’Atzma’ut Celebrations at The Solel

Preschool May 5: Tot Shabbat & Dinner with Special Guest, Billy

Jonas (Twos Performance) 5:30 pm May 10: Volunteer Breakfast 9:15 am May 18: Pre-K Aliyah (Graduation) & Dinner 5:30 pm May 19: Last Day of School 12:00 pm Closure May 30: Camp Begins!

Throughout the week, we will visit different sights in Israel... We will visit a Kotel (Western Wall) made by our Pre-K students and place notes in the wall. We will also create a beautiful Hamsa art project to take home. We will visit the Dead Sea to play in the salt water and rub mud from the dead sea on our arms and legs. We will taste pita, hummus, Israeli salad, and fresh orange juice. We will do army exercises just like the IDF soldiers and learn some joyful Israeli dances. We will end our week with a parade through the synagogue, waving Israeli flags and singing Israeli songs.

Happy Birthday, Israel! We love you!

M ay 2 0 1 7 / I ya r - S i va n 5 7 7 7 5 Message from Our Director of Education

T he partnerships between the lay leadership and the professional staff is a very important relationship in the congregation. For me as the Director of Education, it is based on trust, friendship and lots of laughter. We have to have each other’s backs

and build a strong foundation. We must keep the needs of every congregant at the forefront of what we do, and have the best interest of the congregation always in our hearts and minds.

From the very first interaction I had with Bettina Chow, it has been perfect. A relationship based on mutual respect, a passion of Judaism, admiration and a love of the Northwestern Wildcats. There is an inherent understanding that the goals in temple life must be the same for lay leaders and professional staff; we just come at it from different angles. As Bettina moves forward with her roles on the board of trustees, I have grown to respect and admire the work of Lauren Brown who has been named the new Chair of the Education Committee.

Lauren Brown is the New Way Academy’s Director of Support Services and is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. Lauren received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Rutgers University and her Master’s degree in Education from Teacher’s College, Columbia University. She has worked as a School Psychologist in both Arizona and New York and has worked in a public

school’s alternative education program, a therapeutic support program, and in the private day school of a residential treatment center. Lauren trains graduate students, educators and individuals in the education and behavioral health fields in topics including positive behavioral interventions and supports, teaching students with emotional disabilities, and suicide prevention and assessment.

Lauren brings her expertise to our community and I am blessed to share a passion for music, education and a love of children that makes the ease of our conversations and our deep commitment to all the families at Temple Solel our number one priority.

It is always exhilarating to have partners to work closely with that share a passion and love for temple life. I have already been so fortunate to have so many lay leaders that share a commitment to the health and well-being of the congregation. If you are ever in need and want to reach out to Lauren, please do not hesitate. We all want to make improvements and work together to make positive changes in our community. Each of our lay leaders spend their time and expertise to make Temple Solel the very best that it can be and we all are the beneficiaries of that.

May all our leaders go from strength to strength!

Susan Beiner Ceramics Show Continues in Temple Lobby

Susan Beiner, a world renowned ceramicist, temple member since 2013 and a Joan R. Lincoln Endowed Professor in Ceramics at Arizona State University, gave an informal lecture about her work on Sunday, April 2. For those of you who missed it, this was one of the most captivating art discussions in the four years of ART SHOWCASE receptions. Her work is incredible as indicated by the presentation and the fact that her pieces are in museums around the country and abroad. And the passion and commitment to her work inspired all of us who heard her speak.

A few of her exquisite pieces continue on display in the window boxes in the temple lobby until May 31, 2017. A free portfolio brochure is available there. For additional information and possible purchase, please contact Susan at 951.805.4567 or [email protected]. Her website is: www.susanbeinerceramics.com.

“Magic Power” at Torah Study Last month, I compared Harry Potter to Hebrew wizardry. Since this is a fun topic, I decided to write more essays about it. So what exactly is a “wizard?” In “Magic of the Ordinary” (2003), Rabbi Gershon Winkler explains that a wizard is a person who facilitates supernatural events in daily life. Wizards use spells, charms, and rituals to address human needs, such as healing and protection.

Wizards perform those feats by channeling the power of God. Hebrew names for this power include Ruach Elohim (Divine Spirit), and Chai Ha-Olamim (Life Force of All Worlds). As Rabbi Winkler notes, “Good wizardry involves the channeling of supernal power to heal and to uplift, knowing that the Creator is the ultimate source of all those feats.”

God’s power is all around us, and anyone can use it. But training to be a wizard takes time. At Hogwarts, Harry spends several years learning magic, as well as developing his moral character—a requirement of legitimate wizardry. Likewise in Jewish tradition, magic and morality merge together in the holy path of teshuvah, tefillah, and tzedakah—Torah study, prayer, and good deeds. Such practices strengthen our character, and lift us up from mochin d’katnus (limited mind) to mochin d’gadlus (infinite mind), where all things are possible.

“Historically,” writes Rabbi Winkler, “Hebrew wizards were humble, pious individuals, knowledgeable in Jewish faith and observance. These wonder-working men and women dedicated their lives to helping their communities.” In short, the job of a wizard involves more than knowing spells; it also requires a willingness to assist people with everyday concerns. Such kindness is the “magic of the ordinary” that Winkler celebrates—the magic of living in the ordinary world while fulfilling our role as agents of love and peace.

Torah study meets every Saturday morning at 9:00 am in the library. Please come!

Social Action Community-Co-chairs: Rae Rader and Lauren Brown

Our first annual Interfaith Seder, held on Sunday, April 9 at Temple Solel, was led by Rabbi Linder, Raker Religious School Director Alissa Zuchman and Cantorial Soloist Todd Herzog. Pastor Ryan Hersch from Ascension Lutheran Church offered the Benediction and Deacon Jayne Baker, also from Ascension, offered the closing prayer. The Seder was attended by Temple Solel congregants, members of Ascension Lutheran Church, folks from several other churches and a mosque. Our Interfaith Haggadah, written by Alissa Zuchman, emphasized social justice themes with the four cups of wine representing modern plaques. The first cup, presented by Tara Ijai, represented Islamaphobia which Tara addressed with a discussion of her organization Love Glasses Revolution (www.loveglassesrevolution.com). As Tara says, you can’t see hate when you are wearing your Love Glasses.

Deacon Jayne Baker and Alissa Zuchman

The second cup of wine, presented by Karen Olsen, a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, represented Ascension’s program of feeding the homeless by creating care packages of snacks to keep in your car to hand out as needed.

The third cup of wine was presented by Alissa Zuchman who described how she repairs the world in her own way one Sunday per month by driving three children to see their mother who is in a detention facility in Eloy.

The fourth cup of wine was presented by Temple Solel’s Sam Banen who spoke about his experience with a homeless man in his neighborhood and how important it is to treat those in need in our community with respect and kindness.
