A Message from the CEO

Dear Donors, Friends, Volunteers and Supporters:

On behalf of all of us at WINGS, thank you for your support over the past year. 2016 was definitely one for the record books, propelling us into new territory and allowing us to serve more people than ever before.

With the completion of the Safe House at WINGS Metro, WINGS is serving individuals and families in our northwest suburban Safe House as well as on the southwest side of Chicago. With an increase in capacity in our emergency shelters coupled with our expansive housing program, we were able to provide more than 62,000 nights of shelter to victims of domestic violence and their children.

Sadly, we must continue to grow to meet the demands of those calling for help. Our community of donors and volunteers, alongside our hard-working staff invest time, talent and personal treasures to ensure that WINGS will not only sustain this growth, but will also continue to implement innovative partnerships and solutions to address the complex needs of our families.

We are grateful to possess a committed Board of Directors, suburban and city Leadership Boards and an Associates Board who give tirelessly of their time and expertise to make WINGS a premiere organization that provides the best in care and advocacy to those most vulnerable. We are blessed to have friends such as Pat and Vince Foglia who have given so much to WINGS and to so many organizations serving people in need.

In 2017, we will continue on the road of ensuring that our day-to-day operations are operating efficiently, that we are staying true to our vision, mission and core values. We believe that everyone has the potential and strength to overcome difficult life circumstances and to accomplish goals that will lead to an enhanced quality of life. Our goal is to give adult and child victims a pathway to independence and a way out of a life of chaos, violence, abuse and fear.

Every day we are making a difference and we are thankful to each and every one of you for helping us to give flight to hopes and dreams!

Sincerely,

Rebecca Darr

CEO

The mission of WINGS is to provide housing, integrated services, education and advocacy to end domestic violence. We deliver on our mission through a number of programs and services, all designed to protect and transform the lives of victims of domestic violence.

Our goal as an agency is to provide all the tools and support that is necessary to ensure that victims do not need to return to their abusers. Housing and supportive services tailored to the needs of each family promotes healing from the emotional trauma and affords time for recovering financially.

TWO SAFE HOUSESWINGS operates two Safe Houses – one in the northwest suburbs and one on the southwest side of Chicago, with the capacity to house 85 people each night. Both Safe Houses are open to victims of domestic violence who are actively fleeing a violent situation – with or without their children. While living there, WINGS meets their basic needs including food and clothing and offers counseling and legal assistance through our sister agencies.

TRANSITIONAL and PERMANENT HOUSINGFamilies who enter transitional housing receive assistance with housing costs, counseling, employment assistance and tools to empower them to move forward with their lives. Residents may stay up to two years in one of our 31 houses or apartments located throughout the Chicago area. If residents are disabled, WINGS can provide long-term permanent housing options beyond two years.

OTHER COMMUNITY SERVICESWINGS provides outreach services for community members who are not living in WINGS housing. ALAS (Advocating for Latinas Achieving Self-Sufficiency) is a culturally specific mentoring program for Latina women, providing support and parenting groups, English classes and other activities that emphasize self-development and self-sufficiency.

Project Lifeline mentoring program links community members and WINGS graduates with women who have completed WINGS Housing Programs, or received outreach counseling through WINGS. Mentors provide one-on-one support to women who are seeking an enhanced quality of life and financial stability.

Hospitals: WINGS maintains offices at both Northwest Community Hospital and St. Alexius Hospital, training hospital staff on identifying patients experiencing domestic violence and providing immediate crisis counseling and resources.

During its first 4 ½ months of operation, WINGS Metro served 82 adults and children, representing nearly 4,000 nights of shelter.

The project began in 2013 when WINGS and our partners, Greater Southwest Development Corporation and Metropolitan Family Services received a grant from the City of Chicago and Mayor Rahm Emanuel to build the first new domestic violence shelter in over a decade. The city donated the land and WINGS Metro was born.

WINGS worked with Greater Southwest Development Corporation, Ujamaa Construction and several City of Chicago departments to develop and construct the beautiful facility.

Together, everyone worked to convert a former Police District facility and construct a new annex to the building. Incredibly, the Police District building was the precinct assigned to Police Officer Brenda Sexton, who was murdered by her boyfriend in an act of domestic violence in 2000. The meditation garden at WINGS Metro is named in Sexton’s honor.

WINGS Metro features 40 shelter beds, the Verizon Café and Career Center, the Chicago Bears playground, the Allstate multi-purpose rooms, The Hearst Foundation conference room, Land of Nod playroom, laundry facilities and on-site counseling. Residents live at the Safe House at WINGS Metro for up to 120 days and can transition to an on-site apartment funded by the Chicago Low-Income Housing Trust Fund.

A special thanks goes to Jennifer Welch, First Deputy Commissioner, Chicago Department of Family and Support Services and Cary Steinbuck, former Executive Director of the Chicago Low-Income Housing Trust Fund and currently Director, PRA Acquisitions and Special Initiatives, Chicago Housing Authority.

With the new shelter up and running, WINGS has increased the number of shelter beds in the City of Chicago by 36%.

Three Resale Stores and a New Logistics Center

RESALE STORES

WINGS operates three resale stores in the northwest suburbs that generate critical funds for our operations. Located in Arlington Heights, Schaumburg and Niles, these stores stock high-end donated merchandise for our customers. The stores sell men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, along with accessories, housewares, and furniture. WINGS strives to maintain the highest quality merchandise and to provide the very best in customer service. In 2016, our resale operations accounted for approximately 25% of our agency’s income. Stores are open Monday – Friday from 10 – 6; Saturday 10 – 5; and Sunday 11 – 5.

If you need information about donating to or shopping in our resale stores, please call Diane Coverstone at 847-519-7820, ext. 356 or e-mail her at [email protected].

LOGISTICS CENTERThe WINGS Logistics Center, located in Elk Grove Village, officially opened in May 2016. Donations of clothing and furniture are sorted at this location to maintain uniformity of pricing and distribution to the three resale locations. Since the Logistics Center opened, WINGS has seen increased efficiencies and cost-savings in its resale stores.

Logistics Center hours are Monday – Saturday from 9 – 4:30.

If you need information regarding the Logistics Center and its operations, please call Erick Dahl at 847-519-7820, ext. 350 or e-mail him at [email protected].

“When you give us good stuff we can do GREAT things”

Denise Owens and her children began their amazing journey with WINGS in 2008 when they entered our Shared Housing Program.

While there, Denise became ill and was in kidney failure. Denise’s health condition qualified her for WINGS Permanent Supportive Housing Program, allowing her time to focus on her health.

While at WINGS, Denise engaged in case management services such as counseling, financial management and parenting.

“WINGS helped my life by giving me a second chance,” Denise said. “I received housing and counseling for myself and my children, classes to clean up my credit, holiday gifts and recognition for academic achievements made by both me and my children,” she said.

Denise received The Alliance to End Homelessness Housing Voucher which is awarded to clients who are viewed by WINGS Program as being independent, self-sufficient and engaged in their community. With this voucher, Denise was able to secure a townhome for her family. Denise has three children who have graduated from Hoffman Estates area schools.

Denise is a graduate of the Rita and John Canning Women’s Program at Harper College and is continuing her education to pursue her dream of becoming a probation officer.

Denise considers herself blessed with opportunities afforded to her during her stay with WINGS. Denise is a member of the WINGS Alumni Association, which allows her to mentor others who are navigating their courageous journey. When called upon by WINGS, Denise has selflessly accepted many opportunities to speak at events in hope of inspiring others.

Donor Recognition Pat and Vince FogliaPat and Vince Foglia have been committed supporters to WINGS since 2005, when we opened the first domestic violence shelter in the northwest suburbs. Since then, they have given generously to WINGS, which has allowed us to provide critical services to the victims of domestic violence.

Since the Foglias first became involved with WINGS eleven years ago, their commitment has been unwavering. When our resale store in Palatine burned to the ground in 2010, the Foglias invested in WINGS future by providing funds to rebuild.

In 2013, WINGS, in collaboration with the City of Chicago, made the decision to build a shelter on the southwest side of Chicago. The Foglias once again provided invaluable seed money to jumpstart the project. When the shelter opened in 2016, their support continued with an additional pledge of $1 million to challenge others to donate to WINGS.

In 2015, the Foglias were instrumental in donating the Wellness Place building to WINGS when that organization closed its doors. WINGS is considering a number of options for utilizing the facility.

“We are so proud to support the incredible work that WINGS does for the victims of domestic violence,” Vince said. “The organization is saving and transforming lives every day and we are proud to be a part of it,” he said.

The Chicago BearsThe Chicago Bears made a huge commitment to WINGS in 2016 when they dedicated time and resources toward the new Safe House at WINGS Metro. Not only did they pay all the costs associated with the installation and equipment of the playground just prior to its opening, they also helped with a number of projects during construction.

George H. McCaskey, Chairman of the Chicago Bears said, “Obviously, there’s a need in all areas of the city. Domestic violence goes across socio-economic lines, across racial lines, so we thought it was the right thing to do and we contributed to the playground.”

How You Can Help

WINGS has been successful in its efforts to assist the victims of domestic violence due only to the generosity and commitment of others. Everyone – from our financial donors to our volunteers to our in-kind donors – has given WINGS the ability to grow and serve more people than ever before. When victims need us, we are there to provide them with a way out and a path to a safer future.

Here are some ways individuals, groups and companies can help:

VOLUNTEERVolunteers are always needed to assist in our resale stores, Logistics Center, and Safe Houses. Contact Bruna Srb at [email protected] to get involved.

DONATE WINGS needs your gently-loved clothing, housewares and furniture to benefit our clients. WINGS accepts these items and sells them at one of our three resale stores, where all profits benefit our programs and services. Clients in our programs receive vouchers to “purchase” items to help them regain self-sufficiency within their newly changed lives. Donations can be dropped off at any of our three resale stores or at the WINGS Logistics Center in Elk Grove Village.

Financial donations are also necessary and much-appreciated. One of our newest giving programs is the Circle of Hope Giving Society, where donors who contribute year-round receive benefits for their support. Please contact Terri Channer at 847-519-7820 ext.210 or at [email protected] to make a donation or to learn more.

ATTEND EVENTSWINGS hosts a number of exciting fundraisers throughout the year, many of which feature graduates from our programs. If you would like to learn more about attending or sponsoring one of our events, please contact Nikki Katrodia at 847-519-7820 ext. 233 or at [email protected].

BECOME A MENTOR TO A SURVIVORWINGS relies on community members to provide a lifeline to graduates of our programs as they move forward with their independence. Mentors provide support, friendship, and a shoulder to lean on to survivors. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact April Brayton at 224-225-9690 or [email protected].

Purple Purse ChallengeIn fiscal 2016, WINGS was especially proud to win first place in the Purple Purse

Challenge, a fundraising initiative sponsored by the Allstate Foundation. WINGS was awarded $100,000 as the overall winner of the Challenge, which allowed us to meet the growing needs of our clients.

We hope you support us next year!
