I was born in Nigeria in Africa on September 2, 1974. My father was a civil servant, now retired. My late mother was a teacher. I have one sister and five brothers. It’s a large family, isn’t it! I am the fourth child (the man in the middle) and I entered the seminary as a teenager. The desire to be a priest came alive when we spent our weekends working for our parish priests back home in Nigeria. I attended Bigard Memorial Seminary in Enugu, Nigeria from 1994 to 2003 and was ordained a priest for the Awka Diocese on August 16, 2003. In Nigeria, I worked for ten years in various capacities: As parochial vicar, parish priest, teacher and instructor. In terms of hobbies and activities, I love playing soccer and running. I enjoy travelling and I love to engage people of diverse cultures and ethnicities. I have been to Israel, Portugal, Spain, Germany, London, Italy, Cameroon, Morocco and Ghana. Most of my family is back home in Nigeria. I have my father, my sister and two brothers in Nigeria. My youngest brother is in Australia working with the World Health Organization. My elder brother lives in Cameroon. My eldest brother died thirteen years ago and I lost my mother five years ago; may their souls rest in peace. My father is 82 years and I love spending time with him for he always has many words of wisdom and encouragement. He also loves my company! He was not particularly happy when I told him of my desire to travel to America, but I promised to always remember him in my prayers. I arrived in the US last September and I am enrolled in the master’s program at Santa Clara University. My last ten months were spent in residence and serving the St. Clare Community in Santa Clara. I am very happy and blessed to be among you. I request your prayers for my journey and I will keep you in my prayers as well. God bless you all! Fr. Gerald Nwafor

If your anniversary is coming up, please let us know!

Stand and be Counted

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part

of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions

brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds.

Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time

for infant Baptism, weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or

Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals.

We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and

Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member.

So, are you a registered parishioner?

If not, please consider registering. Registration forms are available in

the Parish Ministry Center or online at www.st-justin.org

INFANT BAPTISM TEAM FORMING! As we transition our infant baptisms to our weekend masses, Fr. Chris has asked us to create a comprehensive infant baptism team. The infant baptism team will:

♦ Lead the parent catechetical preparation sessions.

♦ Arrive early to prepare for the baptism and greet the families as they arrive at mass.

♦ Assist the presider during the baptism, as necessary.

♦ Continue the active connection with the young families afterwards with baptismal anniversary greetings and other support, as the team discerns.

We are very excited to re-energize this ministry to the young families of our parish. If you are interested in being a part of this process, please contact the front office to arrange an appointment with Tracy to begin the conversation.

MINISTRY NEWS

Community Ministry

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent weeks, we have looked at the evolution of how Roman Catholics initiate children into the life of the Church. How did customs evolve in the Eastern Church? At one time, Christians in both East and West preferred to celebrate baptism in a community setting, with large numbers of adults and children initiated at Easter. The two branches of Christianity began to split on the proper time to do this. In the East, water was blessed in abundance on the feast of the Epiphany, which marked, among other things, the baptism of the Lord. Once infant baptism was fixed on that day, local customs marking a birth began to evolve. One celebration was the giving of a name on the eighth day, another was the “purification” of the mother on the fortieth day after birth. In that blessing, re-enacting Mary and Joseph’s journey to the temple, the priest took the baby in his arms and placed the child before the altar. Just as Simeon received the child Jesus, so the priest received the new Christian while chanting Simeon’s prayer. Later, normally on Epiphany, the priest would baptize, chrismate (confirm), and give a few drops of the Precious Blood to the child in a joyous celebration of the whole community. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
