This PDF features a selection of black and white photographs I made on two trips to the Hawaiian Islands in Novem-ber 2010 and then again in May 2011. The first was to The Big Island where I circled the island on the Hawai‘i Belt Road, photographing in rain forests, on the coast, in cemeteries, and in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. The Big Island was the most recently formed of all the Hawaiian Islands and is thus the most volcanic and rocky, with lava fieldseverywhere. Typical mornings wereovercast and rainy, but great clouds would form later in the afternoon.

The second trip started on the Big Island, where I revisited some places from the first trip, and then moved west to O‘ahu and Kaua‘i. The light and clouds were even more beautiful than on the first trip because I was following a very severe weather system that dumped a lot of rain on the islands. I arrived on each island just as the rains had moved off to the

west, leaving skies with great clouds as the weather system broke up.

I decided to include captions with theimages because many of the places I went to have interesting histories.Honohina Cemetery, for example, which I photographed on both trips, is an old cemetery established in the early 1900s to serve the Japanese community in a now vanished sugar cane town. South Point on the Big Island is the site of the ruins of World War II Army barracks, now covered with artwork. And the Thurston Lava Tube in Hawai‘iVolcanoes National Park was formedby a lava flow hundreds of years ago.

When photographing in Hawai‘i I tried to avoid the typical clichéd palm-trees-on-the-beach-at-sunset shot. Even though I did in fact take some pictures like that, the images presented here are intended to reveal more of the mystical and historical aspects of Hawai‘i.

Lava tubes are formed when the outer surfaces of a lava stream cool and solidify. The still molten lava in the interior continues to flow, eventually draining out of the tube leaving a cave like shell. This lava tube was formed between 350 and 500 years ago and is named for Lorrin

Thurston, a newspaper publisher who played an instrumental role in creating the park.

Surrounded by breaking waves, La‘ie Point lies on the tip of a sandstone peninsula jutting out into the Pacific Ocean on the northeastern coast of O‘ahu. According to Hawaiian legend, a giant lizard, or mo‘o, once patrolled this section of land. The lizard, Laniloa, battled a man named Kana. In spite

of the lizard’s reputation for taking the lives of passersby, Kana easily won and divided the bodyof Laniloa into five pieces, which are now the five offshore islands near La’ie Point.

Kane‘ohe Bay, O‘ahu

Kane‘ohe Bay is the largest sheltered body of water in the main Hawaiian Islands. This reef-dominated bay constitutes a significant scenic and recreational feature along the windward (northeast) coast

of the Island of O‘ahu. Mokoli‘i, also known as Chinaman’s Hat for its likeness to the straw hatsChinese immigrants wore, is a volcanic remnant at the very north end of the bay.

Seaside Memorial, Puna, Hawai‘i

Many families in this area have long, established histories here. This memorial, dedicated to four members of the Kuamoo and Kuahiwinui families who have passed away, was

placed in a favorite spot where the families would fish, picnic, and hang out. The families still go there, and when they do, it’s as if these departed loved ones are still with them.

Lava Stone Altar, The Saddle Road, Hawai‘i

Mauna Kea is a mountain sacred to native Hawaiians. This ceremonial altar is one of three on the mountain, and was constructed here in 1999 on the saddle-shaped plateau between Mauna Kea to the north, and Mauna Loa to the south. At one point it had to be rebuilt after

being destroyed by vandals. Ho‘okupu, or offerings to deities, can be seen placed on the altar.

Honohina Cemetery, Hawai‘i

This cemetery was established in the early 1900s to serve the Japanese community in Honohina.Because Honohina was occupied by mostly sugar workers, the town disappeared with the demise of the

sugar industry in that area in the 1970s. A Buddhist temple located on a hill above the cemetery was relocated to the nearby town of Ninole, from where it administers and maintains the cemetery today.

Due to their unusual prehistoric appearance, these giant Moreton Bay Fig trees (Ficus macrophylia) were featured in the film Jurassic Park. Their roots are over four feet high.

I’m a life-long New Yorker who was born in Brook-lyn in 1951. Through my interest in science in high school, I became interested in the technical as-pects of developing film and making prints. I went on to attend the School of Visual Arts in New York City where I earned a BFA in photography in 1976. After graduating, I worked in the audio-visual field for several years, during which time I became interested in video and pursued a career in video editing.

Once my career was launched, my photographic interests were set aside until 1988, when I began to travel to different parts of the country, espe-cially to the Southwest and Southeast. Soon the fire for photography was rekindled.

While I used two medium format cameras, shoot-ing color film in one and black and white in the other, my printing was entirely in color since my darkroom was primarily set up for that. In 1994 I became interested in the options that digital technology offered, and set up a dry darkroom.

Once I had a computer, scanner, and a working knowledge of Photoshop, I started working on my backlog of black and white images. And as soon as the technology allowed it, I began producing black and white prints using carbon pigment quad tone inks on rag paper. In 2003 I got a digital SLR and stopped using film, and now make my land-scape photographs in color as well as black and white by shooting and printing digitally.

In 2006 I bought a Canon 5D digital SLR and had it modified to shoot only in infrared. I’ve added this to my photographic arsenal, and now shoot landscapes in infrared as well

Today, I continue my professional work as a vid-eo editor, editing documentaries for independent producers. I also do color correction work on the documentaries as well, aided by the knowledge I’ve gained from years of color printing, and my Photoshop skills.
