The Great Stensby Lesson Plan

OverviewIn this lesson, students look at how the prefixes bi, aqua, aero and audi can be added to a root word to changethe meaning of the word and create a new word.

Lesson Structure (30 Minutes)0-5 minutes With the students, look at the 4 prefixes bi, aqua, aero and audi. Discuss the meaning of each

prefix. Explain that when a prefix is added to the front of a root word, it changes the meaning of the word and creates a new word.

10-20 minutes • Put a list of root words on the board.• Students to read the words and decide which prefix to use.• Ask students to record each word in a table, either on paper or in books.

20-30 minutes Look at the board and add the appropriate prefix to each root word. Ask students to use a dictionary and locate examples of words which start with any of the 4 prefixes. Recordthese on their table, with a definition.

Materials• Whiteboard

Lesson PreparationPrior to the lesson:

• At the top of the whiteboard write the 4 prefixes as headings. Underneath write different examples of root words.

Clue’s in the Clause Lesson Plan

OverviewIn this 55 minute activity, the understanding of the positioning of a subordinate clause in the middle of a sentence is explained as is the punctuation required. Students then have an opportunity to write their own sentences.

Lesson Structure0-10 minutes Start by showing the students a simple sentence made up of a main clause, e.g. ‘Sam was too

busy.’ and explain to the students that we can add more information to it by adding a subordinate clause in the middle, e.g. ‘Sam, who wanted to go to the match, was too busy.’ Discuss the use of commas.

10-20 minutes Ask the students to work in pairs to think of as many subordinate clauses as they can to add tothe sentence, and then draw the class back together to share their ideas. Discuss how and why the meaning of the sentence may have changed.

20-30 minutes Organising the class into a circle, split the children into two and give half the class a subordinate clause each and the other half a main clause. Ask one of the students who has a main clause to read it out and then ask the others if they have a subordinate clause that would add detail to the sentence. Discuss if there are any alternatives and repeat this a few times.

35-45 minutes Working independently, ask the students to take their card with the clause on it and to includeit in a sentence; for example, if they have a main clause ask them to think of as many subordinate clauses as they can, and if they have a subordinate clause to think of as many main clauses as they can. Remind them to place the subordinate clause in the middle of the sentence for the purpose of this activity.

45-55 minutes Draw the class back together and ask them to share their sentences. Ask students to think ofother options.

MaterialsResources and organisation:

• Cards with clauses and subordinate clauses written on• Organise the students into pairs
