Preface The Harvard University Library (HUL) is pleased to publish the Directory to Photographs at Harvard, an online guide to the photograph collections held in libraries, archives, museums, and teaching hospitals throughout the oldest university in the United States. The Directory serves as a general reference for students and researchers intent on exploring the collections. Important publications record Harvard’s efforts over the course of more than 160 years to make, collect, and document photographs, including Photographs at Harvard and Radcliffe: A Directory,1 published by the Harvard University Library in 1984; and The Invention of Photography and Its Impact on Learning,2 published by the Library in 1994. When, in 2001, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded the University Library’s Weissman Preservation Center a grant to assess the preservation needs of Harvard’s photographs, the 1984 Directory served as the Center’s map to the collections. An important product of the Mellon preservation assessment is this updated version of the Directory. It offers readers a bird’s-eye view of research resources that span more than a century and a half, from the dawn of photography to the present day. It is estimated that 51 repositories at Harvard hold approximately 7.5 million photographic images. The collections are described in brief directory entries, which can now be updated readily as more accurate data are gathered, new discoveries are made, and new images are acquired. Printed copies of the directory can be made for personal use. We are fortunate that growing appreciation and use of photographs has been accompanied at Harvard by overall advances in stewardship of the collections. With the implementation of VIA, Harvard’s online “Visual Information Access” catalog, the ability of librarians, archivists, and curators to catalog visual objects; and of students, scholars, and researchers to find them, has been enhanced dramatically. The development

of the Harvard Depository, which opened in 1986, affords opportunities to store collections under conditions that promote the longevity of paper, plastics, and other substances of which photographs are comprised. Now, with a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Weissman Preservation Center has established a photograph conservation program to preserve the collections and to contribute to ongoing cataloging and rehousing initiatives. As the historical and contemporary role of photography as a vehicle for recording and interpreting our natural and built environment is increasingly understood and appreciated, it is hoped that the outcome of these efforts will be to ensure that photographs survive and can be located, identified, and replicated for very long-term use. We would like to acknowledge the contributions of Weissman Preservation Center staff members: Melissa Banta, Curatorial Associate, who conducted the 2002 Mellon preservation survey of photographs and edited this Directory; Stephen Chapman, Preservation Librarian for Digital Initiatives, who oversaw production for the online directory; Jane Hedberg, Preservation Program Officer, and Thea Burns, Helen H. Glaser Conservator, who assisted with the survey and helped with the final editing of this publication; Barbara Movius, Staff Assistant, who helped with the gathering of information and preparation of the Directory; and Sergey Trishin, Database Specialist, who assisted with the design of the survey project database. We are also grateful to Paul Messier, founder of Boston Art Conservation, who with Ms. Banta conducted the 2002 Mellon preservation survey and developed the project database from which the Directory was produced. We are most appreciative of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Angelica Rudenstine, Program Officer, Museums and Conservation, for their championing of the field of photography and for their support. Finally, we are indebted to, and would like to thank, the many librarians, archivists, and curators at Harvard who work so closely with the Weissman Preservation Center and to such good ends, and who supplied the collection descriptions and digital images that follow. Introduction: “Photographs at Harvard” Technical details about photography came filtering through the Boston newspapers and bookstores in 1839, and the seemingly wondrous invention seized the imagination of the Harvard community. Edward Everett Hale, a Harvard student and later noted theologian and author, began experimenting with the Talbotype, the first negative-to-positive photographic process, and the daguerreotype, a direct-positive process that yielded a single, unique image. A few years later, Josiah Parsons Cooke, a student who went on to become professor of Chemistry at Harvard, created Talbotypes of Harvard Yard from his dormitory window. His original paper negatives recording those graceful views now reside in Houghton Library. From the beginning photography assumed a vital role in the college curriculum. In the 1850s, Harvard received a gift of 4,000 photographic reproductions of European paintings from Francis Calley Gray. In 1860, Professor Cornelius Conway Felton underscored the medium’s value to academic studies. “Photographs of works in every department of art serve an excellent purpose in lectures upon these subjects, and in general teaching,” he said, “and as they can be easily and cheaply produced, there is no reason why this kind of illustration should not be extensively used.”1 From the mid to late 1800s the sciences and humanities branched into formalized disciplines—disciplines that required the analysis of data based on observation. In the 1850s, when the Harvard College Observatory undertook experiments to photograph the moon, Harvard President James Walker noted that these trials had “opened a field of extraordinary interest, inspiring the hope that they will ultimately lead to new and better methods of determining the relative magnitude and position of the stars.”2 The observatory would go on to create, over the course of a century, more than half a million photographs—a record of the night sky that is studied to this day by astronomers around the world. 1 C.C. Felton, Thirty-Fifth Annual Report of the President of Harvard College to the Overseers, Exhibiting the State of the Institution for the Academic Year 1859-60 (Cambridge, MA: Welch, Bigelow and Company, Printers to the University, 1860), p. 19. 2 James Walker, Thirty-Fifth Annual Report of the President of Harvard College to the Overseers, Exhibiting the State of the Institution for the Academic Year 1856-57 (Cambridge, MA: Metcalf and Company, Printers to the University, 1857), p. 7.

Social reformer and professor Francis Peabody understood the value of the medium for the social sciences as well. “The eye,” he reasoned, “is the primary organ of scientific knowledge. . . . Is not this familiar method of the naturalist equally available for the sciences which concern themselves with human history and conduct?”3 Harvard’s Social Museum, which Peabody established in 1903 “to collect the social experience of the world as material for university teaching,” accordingly housed thousands of charts, graphs, and photographs illustrating social conditions in America and abroad.4 By 1900 Harvard was emerging as a modern research institution, and continued throughout the century to amass collections of specimens, artifacts, and photographs in its newly established and expanding libraries, archives, museums, research departments, and teaching hospitals.

Efforts to create an inventory of this enormous and scattered body of photographic work date to the 1960s, when Oscar Handlin, then Director of the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History and later Director of the University Library, began a survey of photographs that related to American history. Several years later, the wealth of materials inspired Davis Pratt, the first curator of photography at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts and first

curator of photography at the Fogg Art Museum, to create detailed listings of a broad range of collections and related subjects. By the early 1980s, as the 150th anniversary of photography approached, institutions across the country began to reassess their photographic holdings with new appreciation. At this time, the Harvard Photo Curators Group was established under the auspices of the Harvard University Library. In one of its first collaborative efforts, the group conducted a systematic survey which identified an estimated four million photographs at the University. It was twenty years ago that the results of the survey, Photographs at Harvard and Radcliffe: A Directory, was published. Today, as this updated on-line edition reveals, the number of photographs has grown to approximately seven-and-a-half million images housed in 51 repositories. As a whole, these materials rival other major collections in the United States and elsewhere, and their increasing use reflects a growing appreciation of photographs as primary source materials. The collections span the history of the medium in all its facets, from daguerreotypes to digital images, and document an encyclopedic range of subjects from art history to zoology. In general, photographs have remained in their original repositories and are often part of larger archival collections that describe and illuminate their context. Scholars can mine a wealth of supporting material that includes journals, research logs, albums, scrapbooks, letters, and diaries. 3 Ibid., p. 1. 4 Francis G. Many collections document research undertaken by the University. The Peabody Museum, for example, holds the original collection of glass-plate negatives, corresponding prints, and field notes from the museum’s seminal archaeological expeditions into Central America. Harvard’s photographs illustrate inventive uses of the medium as a tool for science, as revealed in the first photomicrographs at the Mineralogical Museum illustrating the crystalline beauty of a snowflake, or in the stirring early pathology views at the Countway Library of Medicine. Photographs from the papers of professors and alumni associated with the University are found in the majority of repositories. The Theodore Roosevelt Collection holds documentary, journalistic, and family photographs of the well-traveled president and his family, friends, and associates. The papers of e. e. cummings, Emily Dickinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, T. E. Lawrence, William James, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Alfred Tennyson at Houghton Library also include rich caches of images. Some collections, while they may not relate directly to Harvard’s research or history, have been formed on the basis of the collecting interests of a particular repository. The Harvard Theatre Collection at Houghton Library, for example, holds approximately one million photographs documenting the history of the performing arts, one of the largest collections of its kind in the world. The Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library, houses 75,000 images relating to the history of women, and the history of photography itself is well documented in the Harvard University Art Museums. Photographs relating to a subject of research sometimes surface in a surprising number of repositories that scholars may not have thought to approach. Images of Asia, for example, are housed not only in the extensive collections of the Harvard-Yenching Library, but also in the Andover-Harvard Theological Library, among the papers of missionaries who traveled in Asia throughout the 19th-century; and at the Schlesinger Library in early 20th-century photographs illustrating conditions of women in Asia. The Arnold Arboretum, Botany Libraries, Museum of Comparative Zoology, Peabody Museum, and Tozzer Library of the Harvard College Library all hold images documenting botanical, natural history, and anthropological expeditions to Asia. Photographs of Asian art and architecture reside in the Biblioteca Berenson, Fine Arts Library of the Harvard College Library, Fogg Art Museum, and Frances Loeb Library in the Harvard Design School. Depending on their context, these holdings are valued as primary sources in the sciences and humanities, as well as artistic images having high intrinsic value. In the 1880s, Harvard botanist Asa Gray collected Carleton Watkins’s magnificent oversized prints, taken on a California State Geological Survey, to augment the Gray Herbarium holdings (now part of the Botany Libraries). The aesthetic value of Watkins’s images, formerly acquired as botanical illustration, was recognized by Davis Pratt who transferred two photographs by Watkins from the Harvard College Library to the Fogg Art Museum in 1976. The long list of noted 19th- and 20th-century photographers whose work scholars may find throughout the collections includes, among others, Eugène Atget, Felix Beato, Felix Bonfils, Margaret Bourke-White, Samuel Bourne, Mathew Brady, Julia Margaret Cameron, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alvin Langdon Coburn, Edward Curtis, Walker Evans, Roger Fenton, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, David Octavius Hill, John K. Hillers,

Lewis Hine, William Henry Jackson, Frances Benjamin Johnston, André Kertész, William Edward Kilburn, Eadweard Muybridge, Nadar, Timothy O’Sullivan, James Robertson, Eugene Smith, Southworth and Hawes, Alfred Stieglitz, William Henry Fox Talbot, Adam Vroman, Carleton Watkins, Edward Weston, John Adams Whipple, and Minor White. Photo historian Beaumont Newhall recalled taking art history classes as a Harvard under- graduate in the late 1920s. “The Fogg Art Museum had a huge collection of photographs of architecture, painting, and sculpture from all over the world,” he remembered. “The photographs were . . . excellent, and many of them had been made by photographers who are noted today as masters. . . . We students memorized them . . . with no idea whatsoever that fifty years later those very prints would be rare and valuable collectors’ pieces.”5 Indeed, researchers might not think to go to the Cabot Science Library to find striking examples of New England landscape photography or to McLean Hospital to find images of Italian immigrant workers, who were constructing the hospital in the early 1900s. Over a century and a half since the invention of photography, we are just beginning to explore the depths of our photographic heritage. Scholars will come to learn that the University’s collections document nearly every aspect of human endeavor, holding meaning and value that we have yet to apprehend. In this spirit, we encourage researchers to use this Directory as a portal into an extraordinary visual legacy. Melissa Banta Curatorial Associate Weissman Preservation Center

Center Archives Description: In 1902 a store front clinic called Mount Sinai opened in the west end neighborhood of Boston. It was an answer to the need for health care for a burgeoning population of Jewish immigrants flooding in from Eastern Europe. It was so successful in its mission that it was forced to move to larger space within a year of its opening. However, the persistent need for in-patient facilities remained. It was the women of the community who propagandized for a hospital that would be more inclusive of all their needs. By 1916 enough money had been raised to purchase and equip a mansion on Townsend Street in Roxbury. In 1917, the first patient was admitted. In 1928, the Beth Israel relocated to its present location, and was able to formalize a relationship with Harvard Medical School. A portrait file contains photographs of administrators, physicians, trustees and philanthropists; views of building exteriors and construction scenes; Nursing school photographs, 19l6-present, show student nurses in training and informal scenes of student life; images also document fund-raising efforts from 19l0 forward. In 1996, Beth Israel and the Deaconess Hospital merged. The archives acquired a large number of photographs pertaining to the organization and activities of the Deaconess from its founding in 1896 to the present. Many of these images are uncatalogued at this time. Arrangement: Corresponds with the organization of the hospitals. Finding Aids: Indexed according to subject.

Description: The photograph collection of the Fototeca Berenson consists mainly of images of Italian paintings, drawings, and miniatures from the thirteenth through the sixteenth centuries, plus significant but smaller groups of photos of Italian sculpture, architecture, and other art forms. There are also sizable or important sections on the painting, sculpture, and architecture of other European countries, on classical art, on east and south Asian art, and on Islamic art and architecture. The Berenson Archive contains photographs of Villa I Tatti and of the family, friends, and household of Bernard and Mary Berenson. Recent significant acquisitions include 1,500 photographs of the frescoes in the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi taken before the 1997 earthquake, and 900 images of Giotto’s frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. Since 2002 we have been carrying out a specially commissioned campaign to photograph the entire collection of the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence. Arrangement: There are several different systems of arrangement depending on the subject. Italian paintings and drawings, the largest category, are arranged by school of painting, as defined by Bernard Berenson (Florentine, Sienese – Pisan – Lucchese , Central Italian, North Italian, Venetian), and within school, chronologically by artist. Miniatures are organized by location. Non-Italian paintings and drawings are arranged by country and then alphabetically by artist. Other subject sections are organized by location and/or by artist. Finding Aids: A card file, arranged by location, for Italian paintings and drawings (1200-1600), incomplete and not kept current; Bernard Berenson's published lists of painters and their works. At present, the creation of an electronic finding aid to the entire collection is underway. A project to catalog approximately 12,000 photographs of so called “Homeless” Italian paintings and drawings, works of art whose current location is unknown, is in progress.

Archives of the Orchid Herbarium Description: The Botany Libraries houses the collections of five research libraries, which are managed collectively as the Botany Libraries. They include the Library of the Arnold Arboretum, the Economic Botany Library of Oakes Ames, the Farlow Reference Library of Cryptogamic Botany, the Library of the Gray Herbarium, and the Oakes Ames Orchid Library.

The Library of the Arnold Arboretum houses botanical images providing visual reference to type specimens of various herbaria, including about 4,000 photographs of woody plants from the Herbarium Leveillé in Edinburgh.

The Economic Botany Library collection is primarily a teaching collection containing photographs relating to plants and plant products and their uses in human affairs. With an emphasis on areas of food, drugs, and fuel, images show plants and people in native settings throughout the world and provide a visual history of farming and cultivated plants. Included are 2,500 prints of habitats, 1875-1920, and another 2,500, 1920-1950; about 1,200 lantern slides, many hand-colored; and nearly 1,000 35mm slides. About 100 prints of the Botanical Museum include views of exhibition installations and other interiors.

The Farlow Reference Library of Cryptogamic Botany materials relate to the study of lower (non-flowering) plants, including fungi, lichens, mosses, liverworts, and algae, and to botanists associated with the field. Included are individual and group portraits of cryptogamic botanists; photographs of field trips; and a group of negatives of the William G. Farlow home. Sets of teaching slides and negatives of plant specimens are among the holdings, but are not yet accessible. (continued)

Soviet Information Bureau/World News Service Photograph Collection

Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies Gelatin silver print

Description: The Soviet Information Bureau Photograph Collection of the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies is comprised of approximately 5,000 black and white photographs of everyday life in the Soviet Union at the very beginning of the Cold War, during an era that has come to be known as High Stalinism. Topics range from glamour shots of celebrities (famous doctors, scientists, artists, politicians) to photos of ordinary people from all parts of the Soviet empire (including from non-Russian-speaking republics and Eastern Europe) pursuing their occupations (industry, transportation, agriculture), hobbies, sports, and leisure activities. There are several series of photos of special historical interest (Battle of Stalingrad, VE-day parades, Stalin’s 70th birthday celebration) as well as such topics as idealized visions of Soviet motherhood. The uniqueness of this collection lies precisely in this variety of topics, as well as in its broad geographic coverage. Photographs have typed captions (mostly in English, ca. 1947-1949) and are stamped “SIB Photoservice, Moscow” and “World News Service, Toronto” and some “Approved by Censor” on the verso. The photos were originally taken by professional photojournalists employed by the Soviet Information Bureau (SIB), the main propaganda arm of the Soviet state during World War II. They were intended for distribution and publication in English-speaking media outlets as pro-Soviet propaganda. This particular set of photos appears to have served as the working collection of the staffs of the Moscow and Prague bureaus of World News Service, McGraw-Hill, Inc. Arrangement: Photographs are kept in four separate boxes, only two of which are arranged according to the topics devised by the staff of the Moscow office of McGraw-Hill's World News Service. Finding Aids: Brief provisional record (Number 008862577) in HOLLIS. Four boxes of uncataloged photos currently housed in the Davis Center librarian’s office and accessible for browsing only by appointment.

Description: In keeping with its mission, the University Archives holds photographs that document most aspects of University life. While at least half of the photographs are organized in three separate collections, many archival and manuscript collections contain photographs integrated with predominately textual materials. The three photo collections focus on portraits, subjects, and places. The portrait collection contains photographs of Harvard graduates, officers, and employees, as well as people peripherally associated with the University, such as honorary degree recipients and visiting lecturers. The subject collection includes student life, military training, athletics, commencement ceremonies, and club activities. Places include views of University buildings and environs including the campuses and the city of Cambridge. Archival and manuscript collections containing a high proportion of photographs include the records of the University News Office, the Athletic Association, the graduating classes, the Harvard College Observatory, and the Cruft Photographic Laboratory, which documented research in Department of Physics and Division of Applied Sciences. Some collections contain fewer photographs that are nonetheless noteworthy for their format or photographer. Class albums, 1852-1900, for example, contain original photographic prints by George Warren and the Notman Studios that help document the early history of photography in the Boston area.

Arrangement: Photo collections: portraits and subjects are organized alphabetically; places are organized geographically. The arrangement of photographs in record groups (e.g. Corporation Records) or manuscript collections (e.g. papers of faculty members) reflects the arrangement of the record group or collection as a whole. Attributed to the studio of Mathew BradyEdwin Forrest as King Lear

Daguerreotype Description: The collection represents all aspects of the history of performance with an emphasis on English and American theater. Dance, film, and popular entertainments are also well documented. Many important twentieth century photographers from Britain, Europe, the United States, and Canada, such as Cecil Beaton, Mathew Brady, Byron, Arnold Genthe, George Hoyningen Huene, George Platt Lynes, are all well represented, as are most commercial studios who specialized in theatrical photography, such as White and Vandamm. Most major commercial photographers in North America and Europe, including (for example) Nadar, Napoleon Sarony, and Mathew Brady, are well represented, although the collection is organized by subject for purposes of theatrical research and no indexes by photographer exist.

The major general series of photographs are portraits, scenes, and subject collections. Special photographic collections include: Angus McBean Archive (London stage, opera, and portraiture, about 30,000 glass negatives and 25,000 proof prints of the London stage, 1937-1967); Alix Jeffry (Off-Broadway New York theater, 1952- 1967, and portraits of performing artists, 1968-1979, about 75,000 negatives, prints, and contact sheets); George Hoyningen-Huene (fashion and portraiture, about 15,000 prints and proofs); Monks House Albums (photographs taken and collected by Virginia and Leonard Woolf, about 1,500 images); George Platt Lynes (portraiture and fashion, about 400 prints and proofs); John Lindquist (Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, ca. 1940-1980, about 20,000 negatives, proofs, prints, and slides); Ark Smith (Boston Ballet, about 10,000 slides); Bernadette Gardella (Boston Ballet, about 20,000 slides); Richard Land (Loeb Drama Center, about 1,500 slides); Will Rapport (Boston theater and dance, ca. 1940-1960, about 50,000 negatives and proofs); John Thayer Collection (film stills and film star portraits, about 15,000 images); William Como/Dance Magazine collection (contemporary dance, more than 5,000 images); Loeb Drama Center Archive (Loeb Mainstage productions, 1960-1979, more than 1,400 images). Description (cont.): Subject collections include: theatrical portraits; theatrical scenes; film stills; pageants and outdoor drama; vaudeville; minstrels; magic; freaks; wild west, puppetry, circus and animal shows, Gilbert and Sullivan, and Shakespeare. Especially large groups of photographs exist for many prominent nineteenth-century performers, such as Sarah Bernhardt, Lillian Russell, Lillie Langtry, Lotta Crabtree, and Charlotte Cushman, theaters and producing organizations, such as the Abbey Theatre (Dublin), Brattle Theatre Company, Poet's Theatre, Cambridge Drama Festival, Provincetown Playhouse, Wilbur Theatre (Boston), and theater at Harvard University and Radcliffe College, including Hasty Pudding Theatricals and George Pierce Baker's 47 Workshop Other special collections containing numerous photographs include: Howard D. Rothschild Collection (Ballets Russes); Parmenia Migel Ekstrom Papers (Ballets Russes); George Pierce Baker Papers (47 Workshop); Stravinsky- Diaghilev Foundation Collection (Ballets Russes); H. W. L. Dana Collection (Russian theater); Feodor Komisarjevsky Papers; George Brinton Beal Collection (circus); Percy Mackaye Papers; Otis Skinner Papers; Burns Kattenburg Collection (contortionists and acrobats); Maryette Charlton Collection; Norma Maclain Stoop Papers; Frederick Kiesler Collection (visual art and design).

Arrangement: Special collections (archives or collections of the work of individual photographers) are kept separate, and have arrangements that are appropriate to each archive. General series (collections of photographs organized by subject or format and not by photographer or provenance) are arranged as follows: (1) Nineteenth century photographs - portraits and scenes; (2) Twentieth century photographs - portraits, scenes, and film stills; (3) Daguerreotypes and tintypes; (4) Lantern slides and stereographs. Portraits generally refer to photographs of a single person, or of groups not in dramatic scenes, and for each person portraits in costume are separate from portraits not in costume. Scenes include photographs of more than one person in dramatic scenes. In general, portraits are organized by name and production title. There are further subdivisions and refinements that can be explained by the Theatre Collection staff. Nineteenth-century photographs are stored by format, including carte-de-visite, cabinet, and larger forms of mounted and unmounted photographs; there are also several special subject categories including Minstrels, Freaks, and Circus. Some donated collections have also been kept intact and housed separately. Photographs will also be found in nearly every one of the hundreds of special collections (organizational archives and personal papers) in the Theatre Collection.

Finding Aids: Inventories of most special collections are available in the Theatre Collection reading room. Increasingly these inventories are available as finding aids in OASIS.
