The Desert

A desert is very sandy land. Deserts are all over the world. Plants and animals live in the desert. Barely anything grows in the desert. The desert is sweet! The desert can be both hot and cold. It gets less than 10 inches of rain a year. Deserts in America can get snow! Not all deserts are hot, but most are.

Many animals live in the hot, dry desert. Rattlesnakes and bobcats are meat eaters in the desert. Elf owls are small birds that inhabit the desert. The elf owl lives in the cacti.

Even though it is hot and dry in the desert, there are some plants like cactus, sagebrush and rabbit bush. Those are some plants that don’t need much water so they can live in the desert.

Elf owls nest inside big cactuses. The cactus is cool, shady and safe from predators. It is very thorny and other animals stay away from it. The desert is very interesting and we enjoyed learning about it.
