Introduction

Taman Negara, the largest national park in Malaysia is

well known to the phanerogamic botanist for its rich and undisturbed tropical lowland evergreen and montane

rainforests (Soepadmo 1971). However, to the cryp

togamic botanist the park is a terra incognita

bryophytica. In July 1978 while accompanying the Honors Field Trip of the Botany Department of the

University of Malaya, I collected bryophytes in the lowland evergreen forests near park headquarters at

Kuala Tahan. The mosses collected are reported herein

while the hepatic collections are being worked up by Dr. H. Inoue of the Tokyo Science Museum and will be

reported on at a later date.

A total of 59 species were collected of which 13

species were previously unknown for the moss flora of

Peninsular Malaya. Twenty state records for Pahang were also found. Among the 13 species reported as new

to the peninsula, Aerobryidium crispifolium (Broth. &

Geh.) Fleisch., Fissidens elmeri Broth., Pyrrhobryum

longiflorum Mitt, and Taxithelium alare Broth, are

westward range extensions from Borneo, Celebes, and

the Philippines whereas the remaining nine species are common to areas surrounding Peninsular Malaya, i.e.

Java, Sumatra, Thailand, and Indochina. The large number of state records for Pahang is to be expected

considering that most mosses reported for the peninsula are known from only one to two stations.

Collections and list of localities

Voucher specimens are deposited in the Bryophyte Herbarium (KLU) of the Botany Department, Univer

sity of Malaya with occasional duplicates deposited in other herbaria as noted. A list of collection sites by collection numbers follows:

2504-2539 Pahang. Bukit Teresek Trail, elev. 200-1000 ft., 14 July 1978.

2540-2581 Pahang. Lata Berkoh area on Sungai Tahan, elev. 200-300 ft., 15 July 1978.
