PREFACE

Why this Guide:

This guide covers the top 50 full-time MBA programmes in the UK market from an Indian

perspective. I have used the term ‘MBA programme’ in this guide to mean ‘full-time MBA

programme’.

After the USA, the UK is the second biggest international study destination for Indians wishing

to study on an MBA programme. The UK also offers the second biggest range of globally recognized

full-time MBA programmes for international applicants. Furthermore, compared to two years of full-

time MBA study in the USA, most UK full-time MBA programmes have programme duration of only

one year and do not require GMAT scores, thereby offering excellent value for money for Indian

applicants.

An MBA is an investment for life – an investment which pays back many times over the original

outlay. However, Indian students, especially those who are not familiar with the UK market, suffer

two distinct disadvantages when considering a UK MBA programme:

The relevant information for decision making – particularly in the Indian context – is not

easily available and requires a significant amount of research, which potential applicants may

not have time or resources for. My interviews with Indian students on the UK MBA

programmes suggest that a consolidated resource providing relevant information for decision

making could save up to two months of research time.

Even if the students find time to conduct their own research into the UK programmes, the

information available is not standardized across all programmes. This makes it very difficult

for students to compare one MBA programme with another in order to arrive at a suitable

shortlist for consideration.

Therefore, I have written this guide to serve as a comprehensive information resource for those

Indian applicants who want to study on full-time MBA programmes in the UK, but either do not have

time to conduct the research or do not have standardized information to compare the various

Page | 5

programmes. There is currently no other online or offline resource available in the world that allows

Indian applicants to search and compare the top 50 full-time MBA programmes in the UK market.

In addition to the standardized information about the UK MBA programmes that will help the

Indian applicants to search and compare them, this guide also includes insights about each of these

programmes that are distilled from my interviews with many of the current Indian students on the

programmes. Thus, this guide also offers the readers unique insights into each of these MBA

programmes from an Indian perspective that the individual schools will not be able to provide. I hope

that Indian MBA candidates will find such insights as useful as the comparative information about the

programmes.

About the Author

Praveen Mahadani is an MBA from INSEAD in France – a business school that has been

consistently ranked among the top five business schools in the world. He also holds a PGDM from

IIM, Bangalore. For the last four years, Praveen was the membership director of the Association of

MBAs (AMBA) in London, the global accreditation body that accredits MBA programmes world-

wide for about 200 business schools. In his role as membership director, Praveen worked very closely

with the top 50 business schools in the UK. As a result of the above experience and his own MBA

from INSEAD, Praveen is uniquely placed to offer insights into the top 50 MBA programmes in the

UK.

Prior to his role with AMBA, Praveen spent over 15 years in the private sector in progressively

senior roles in sales, marketing and general management in IT, consulting, telecom and consumer

products in the UK, Western Europe, Africa and Asia. While in Africa, he also trained and advised

working executives on higher education in management.

Praveen holds dual citizenship of the UK and India and lives in London with his wife and

daughter.

Who is this Guide For?

Page | 6

This guide is for you if:

You are an Indian currently residing outside the UK and are serious about enrolling on a full-

time MBA programme in the UK within the next 2–3 years.

You are a graduate in any discipline (i.e. have a bachelor degree) AND have at least 2–3 years

of professional work experience, either in India or abroad.

You have less than 2 years of work experience (or have no work experience at all), but have

exceptional academic qualities as demonstrated by your academic performance in the first

(bachelor) degree.

You do not have a bachelor degree but have at least 5 years of high calibre, achievement-

oriented professional work experience, either in India or abroad.

This guide is not for you if:

You do not have a bachelor degree (first degree) in any discipline AND have less than 5 years

of professional work experience.

You do not intend to study your MBA in the UK.

You do not want to study your MBA in the UK on a full-time basis, viz. you want to study an

MBA in the UK on a part-time, modular or distance learning basis.

Structure of this Guide

This guide has two parts.

a) Part 1 covers the information that is UK-specific but is not specific to any particular business

school. This part will help you understand:

Destination UK versus USA for your MBA.

Admission requirements and curriculum structure for the UK MBA programmes.

Key Factors to Consider (KFC) in shortlisting UK programmes, based on your

individual circumstances.

Page | 7

Developing a draft budget for the UK MBA programme.

b) Part 2 covers detailed information about the top 50 full-time MBA programmes in the UK. I

have provided this information using about 50 relevant parameters for each MBA programme,

covering areas such as rankings, accreditation, admission requirements, application deadlines,

tuition fees, class demographics, career information and the like. The information is provided

in a consistent and standardized way, thereby allowing you to compare various programmes

across a number of parameters. For easy reference, I have divided part 2 into three further

sections:

Section 1 covers forty schools that require a minimum of three years of full-time

work experience from all applicants.

Section 2 covers eight schools that accept less than three years of full-time work

experience from applicants.

Section 3 covers those business schools (among the top 50) that currently do not offer

a full-time MBA programme.

PART 1 – COMMON INFORMATION ABOUT THE UK MBA PROGRAMMES

Chapter 1: Getting Started

There is more to doing an MBA than a Google search for ‘UK MBA’ and applying to the first

programme that shows up. An MBA – and especially one from an international business school – is a

serious investment and requires serious thinking. The key starting points for you – as an Indian

applicant – to consider are as follows.

UK versus USA

There are significant differences between the two countries in terms of the profile of the

applicants, the admission criteria, programme duration and career prospects. For example, if you have

absolutely no work experience, you are probably better off heading to the USA for your MBA. On the

other hand, if you have substantial work experience, your returns will be much higher if you select the

UK as your destination.

Shortlisting the UK MBA programmes

Once you have decided on the UK as your destination, the next question is ‘Which MBA

programme?’ There are about 120–130 business schools in the UK that offer full-time MBA

programmes. This guide covers the top 50; however, even this is a huge number for you to apply to.

You need to create a shortlist of about 3-4 programmes that you are serious about, before starting your

application process for these programmes. This guide helps you understand the ‘Key Factors to

Consider (KFC)’ in creating such a shortlist, based on your individual (and probably unique)

circumstances.

The KFCs are distilled from a number of interviews with current Indian students and cover what

Indian students consider to be important in an MBA programme. Using the KFC tools provided in this

guide, you can generate a shortlist of 4–5 programmes where you will have the highest chance of

success.

Developing a draft budget

As an international applicant – especially if you have never visited the UK before – it is

important to have a realistic idea of the budget you will need during your stay. While some of the

Page | 10

budget heads are obvious (e.g. tuition fees, living costs, etc), my experience with the Indian students

suggests that most of them tend to forget certain budget heads that may eventually account for up to

20% – 30% of the total cost. The budget guidelines provided by the various MBA programmes on

their respective websites are generalized and do not address the specific Indian perspective. The

toolkits provided in this guide will not only help you develop a realistic budget from an Indian

perspective, but they will also help you refine your budget based on the programmes that you have

shortlisted in the previous step.

Chapter 2: The UK MBA Market for Indians

The UK has always been a favourite destination for higher studies for Indians, for reasons

ranging from familiarity with the language, quality of higher education, global reputation of

universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, to historical links with India. Over the last ten years or so,

the UK as an international destination for MBA studies has taken off among Indians. Today, the UK

ranks next only to the USA as the place to go to if you want to study an MBA outside India.

The term UK actually includes four separate countries – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern

Ireland – broadly united together through common policies and complete mobility of residence and

employment. Many Indians also come across the term Great Britain, which denotes three of these

countries together – England, Wales and Scotland.

Currently, the UK has between 100 and 130 business schools offering MBA programmes. The

Association of Business Schools (http :// www . the - abs . org . uk / ), which is the membership body of UK

business schools, currently has about 120 schools as members. The Association of MBAs

(www . mbaworld . com ), which accredits MBA programmes world-wide, currently accredits MBA

programmes at about 45 top business schools in the UK.

In addition to MBA-specific market information, it is also important to be aware of country-

specific immigration and visa regulations when deciding to study abroad. The UK immigration laws –

especially for students – are currently undergoing many changes and are generally becoming tougher

with regards to who is granted a visa, the right to work in the UK and the ability to bring your family

with you. This guide is not meant to be an information resource on such regulations. You should

consult an immigration expert to assess your individual circumstances. The UK Border Agency is the

official and authoritative source on visa/immigration issues and the latest rules/policies with regards

to post-graduate students can be found at http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/studyingintheuk/adult-

students/

Chapter 3: The MBA – Key Differences between the UK and the USA

Before selecting a business school, it is important to understand the key differences between the

UK business schools on one hand, and the US business schools on the other, so that you can select the

most appropriate location based on your individual circumstances. The term MBA has very different

connotations in the UK vis-à-vis the US market. In the UK, the MBA is a ‘post-experience’ degree,

thus encouraging mature applicants rather than fresh graduates. As an applicant, you are expected to

have worked in a professional capacity for some time after your first degree (usually three years or

more) before embarking on an MBA. This is very different from the US market where business

schools such as Harvard and Wharton are very open to admitting academically bright students straight

after the first degree.

This key difference manifests itself in programme areas such as duration of the programme, class

demographics, academic curriculum and the recruiters’ perspective of MBA students. Table 1 below

outlines these key differences. It is, however, important to note that the following differences relate to

the overall market – there are some business schools in the UK that are closer to the US market in

terms of their MBA philosophy, and vice versa. However, such schools are in the minority and such

school-specific differences are covered in the individual school profiles in part 2 of this guide.

Thus, in general, the UK MBA is more suited to mature applicants with significant work

experience, though there are exceptions to the rule, as you will see from the school profiles in part 2.

Chapter 4: Academic Structure of the UK Full-Time MBA

While each school follows a slightly different academic schedule, in general the UK full-time

MBA programme is divided into the following three key parts. Most of the UK full-time programmes

start around September each year, with a few exceptions that start in January/February. The individual

school profiles in part 2 will tell you the programme start dates.

Term 1 (September – December/January). This usually lasts for 3–4 months and covers the

core, compulsory subjects. The teaching is usually from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., Monday–

Friday. This is also the most intensive term, with all free time devoted to assignments, reading

and group work. The first term usually ends with written exams followed by the Christmas

holidays. In some schools, the exams start after the Christmas holidays.

Term 2 (January – April/May). This term covers the balance core subjects, but is mostly

dedicated to electives (optional subjects). The teaching for core subjects follows the same

schedule as in the first term; however, since the focus is on electives, the classes are spread

apart. There are very few exams in this term – assessment is mostly through assignments and

group work. This term also includes the Easter holidays (March/April). Some schools include

an international study week as part of this term, where you will be taken to a different country

for one week.

Term 3 (June-September). This term is mostly dedicated to writing a dissertation project on

an individual basis. Very little teaching or group work takes place in this term – students are

expected to work on their dissertation projects individually. The dissertation project is one of

the following three types – a company internship project sourced by your school, a company

internship project sourced by you or a desk-based academic research project. If you choose to

work on an internship project with a company, you will have two deliverables – one to your

company and the second to your academic supervisor on the MBA programme. The desk-

based research project has only one deliverable – to your academic supervisor. There is no

Page | 15

exam in term 3. The internship/company projects are usually unpaid, though some companies

may offer to reimburse your expenses.

The final result of whether or not you have successfully completed your MBA is usually

announced two months after the submission of dissertation.

Most students use term 3 and beyond to search for jobs. At the start of term 3, many students

also relocate to a bigger city (for example London) in order to help with their job search. Some

students choose to go back to India and complete their dissertation in India.

Key points about the UK MBA academic structure

The UK MBA teaching style is very different from India. You are expected to read and

assimilate the literature and come out with your reasoning and inferences, especially in

written assignments, as part of the course. Cutting and pasting material from existing text

books is considered plagiarism unless you provide the necessary references in the

bibliography, and you will still be expected to draw your own conclusions from the literature

review.

The UK teaching places no weightage on learning by memory or rote. The text books are for

reference reading but you are assessed on your understanding and the ability to draw up and

defend your own rationale and arguments.

Punctuality in the class is of paramount importance. Professors frown upon students who

arrive more than five minutes late to the class or group meetings. Many of the business

schools complain that Indians – and in particular, rich Indian students – consider arriving late

at the class is a way of showing their superiority over others. Remember that this is

completely frowned upon in the UK and you are liable to attract some disciplinary action if

you consistently turn up late to the classes.

Since most of the schools have a one-year programme, the MBA in the UK is very intense

compared to the US or Indian programmes. You will not have any time to take on a part-time

job if you want to do justice to such as expensive programme. In general, you should budget

the same amount of time as your classroom teaching time for group work and your own

Page | 16

reading in term 1 (core subjects), and double the classroom teaching time for your own

reading and group work in term 2 (electives).

The current student visa rules allow a foreign student on an MBA programme to stay on in the

UK on a student visa for up to 4 months beyond the end of the programme if the programme

duration is 12 months or more. However, if the programme duration is less than 12 months

(and more than 6 months), only 2 months of additional stay is allowed.

Most of the UK programmes announce the results two months after the end of the final term,

and the convocation ceremony (called a ‘graduation’ ceremony in the UK, where you receive

your MBA certificate) is another two months later. Therefore, you do need this ability to stay

in the country for up to four months after your programme finishes. These four months also

give you time to search for jobs in the UK.

Page | 17

Chapter 5: Admission Process and Eligibility Criteria for UK MBA

Unlike the US schools, most UK schools do not require a GMAT or GRE score, though an

increasing number of schools prefer to have it. This is embedded in the philosophy that UK MBA

programmes are meant for more experienced and mature applicants. Thus, work experience, rather

than GMAT, is a better indicator of success on and beyond the programme. Schools such as London

Business School that cater for younger applicants with less work experience tend to rely on GMAT

more than other schools do.

In general, the admission process for most of the schools includes the following:

a. Eligibility criteria. These are defined as a combination of your work experience and your

bachelor/university degree. In general, schools require you to have a good bachelor degree

followed by at least three years of professional work experience. However, as mentioned

earlier in the guide, this varies from school to school. The school profiles in part 2 provide

you with the exact eligibility requirements for each school.

b. Compulsory documents required. Almost all schools will require you to submit the following

documents (either online or as paper copies):

Completed application form

A Personal Statement explaining why you want to study an MBA at that particular

school

A copy of your CV

A copy of your passport

Two references – most of the UK schools will ask for either two academic references

or one academic and one professional reference. It is only when you can demonstrate

that it is not possible for you to secure an academic reference (e.g. because you

graduated long ago and have lost contact with your university) that two professional

references will be accepted.

Page | 18

Test results for an English Proficiency test – this is required by schools as well as by

the UK Border Agency who will want to check that you can speak English. Accepted

tests are IELTS, TOEFL, the Pearson test of English language or other equivalent

tests. A certain minimum score is expected and this is shown in the individual school

profiles.

c. Additional documents required. In addition to the compulsory documents above, some

schools require the following additional documents:

GMAT score – while there is no specified minimum score, the schools expect a

minimum of 550. Most of the schools also indicate the average GMAT score of the

previous class that can serve as a reference point for you. The school profiles show

you this score.

Essays – in addition to the personal statement, some schools will require you to

complete additional essays. These essays allow the schools to understand you as a

person. They should be treated very seriously and more so in cases where your

GMAT score is not very high.

d. The Admission Process. Most schools will follow the stages below:

Fill in an online application form (very few schools have a paper-based application

process).

Send the necessary documentation to the school, including the scores for English

language and GMAT (where necessary).

The school makes an initial decision based on the documents and invites you for an

interview.

The interview is in person – either with a member of the faculty or an alumnus. If a

personal interview is impractical, then a telephone interview is arranged.

Based on the results of the interview, the school makes you an offer, for you to accept

before the deadline by paying a holding deposit.

Page | 19

Chapter 6: Key Factors to Consider (KFC) in Choosing a Business School

At the end of the day, selecting a business school is a very personal choice. However, there are

certain important factors to consider in choosing a school. I call them ‘Key Factors to Consider

(KFC)’. These KFCs help you to create an initial shortlist of the schools that are closest to your needs.

I highly recommend that you do not make the final decision until you have visited the shortlisted

school campuses once, or if it is impractical to visit the campus, you have spoken with one or two

recent alumni or current students.

The individual school profiles in part 2 of this guide give you school-specific information on

each of the KFCs. Thus, while the section below explains these factors in detail and why

consideration of these factors is important when deciding to study for an MBA in the UK, you should

compare these factors across various schools using the school-specific profiles to arrive at a shortlist

of schools most suited to your requirements.

The KFCs are listed below. After the list, I discuss each factor in detail, including its importance

from an Indian perspective and its implications for you.

average experience, international nature of students, etc)

Cost of the programme (tuition fees and living expenses)

Most of the Indian students who come to study for an MBA in the UK rely on their own savings,

family support and a loan from Indian banks to fund their studies. Tuition and living expenses are

therefore important considerations. Fortunately, living costs do not vary widely across geographical

regions in the UK, with the exception of London where living costs are significantly higher than the

rest of the country.

The current visa regulations in the UK require you to have at least GBP 5,400 per person in your

bank account towards your UK living expenses, in addition to the stated tuition fees, in order to

receive your student visa. This is valid only if you are going to study at a business school which is not

based in London. If you are going to study at a school that is based in London, you will need to show

a bank balance of at least GBP 7,000 (in addition to your tuition fees) to receive your student visa.

However, the above balances should be considered as a ‘minimum’ and not an ‘average’. The

real living cost in the UK (in London as well as the rest of the country) is higher than these figures,

and you will therefore need to prepare a realistic budget for the programme if you do not want to run

out of cash mid-way through your course. There are three key factors to be considered when

budgeting for the living costs for your MBA programme in the UK:

Inclusions in your tuition fees. Depending on the school, your tuition fees may cover

items/activities like a laptop/iPad, books, breakfast and lunch, international study trips, etc.

The school profiles in this guide indicate the inclusions and exclusions within the tuition fee

for each school. Some schools may charge higher tuition fees, but may include a number of

non-tuition related items in the fees, thereby bringing down your total cost of the programme.

Whether the school is in London or outside London. The cost of living varies significantly

between London and the rest of UK. However, outside London, the cost of living does not

vary dramatically across the different regions. London is about 50% more expensive than the

rest of the UK.

Page | 21

Are you planning to stay alone or with family (wife/partner and/or children)? As expected, the

cost of living will increase significantly if you have to support your family.

The MBA project internship/dissertation, which is a mandatory requirement for the completion

of the MBA, is usually an unpaid internship with the company so you should not build any income

into your budget from such activities. Similarly, scholarships and bursaries are extremely limited and

you should not rely on them to fund your MBA. Finally, given the intensity of the programme, you

will not have the time to do any part-time work during you programme.

Class size and demographics

On an MBA programme, you learn as much (or sometimes more) from your fellow students as

from your professors/tutors. The entire MBA experience is dependent on the kinds of students who

are attending the programme with you – the kind of work experience they have, the kind of cultural

experience they have, the nationalities they represent, etc. Thus, class size and demographics will be

one of the most important KFCs for selecting a school. In general, the class sizes on the UK MBA

programmes are small compared to their counterparts in Asia or the USA. However, the UK business

schools fall into three distinct categories – those with class sizes of fewer than 50, those with class

sizes of between 50 and100, and finally those with class sizes above 100. The term ‘cohort’ is used

synonymously with class size in the UK – the term indicates a group of students who start a specific

programme together at the same start time, for example September. Thus, schools have full-time

MBA cohort sizes of fewer than 50 students, between 50 and 100 students, and finally over 100

students.

A smaller class size will mean more personalized attention. However, a larger class size will

mean a better learning experience from fellow students as you will learn from a diverse class. A larger

class size will also mean a larger alumni network that you can approach for help, particularly in areas

related to careers and job searches.

In addition to the class size, each school will have a slightly (or in some cases, widely) varying

demographic in terms of the age of the participants, work experience of the participants, the

nationalities, the gender profile of the participants, etc. However, the number of women participants

Page | 22

on the UK MBA programmes seems to be constant at between 20% and 30% of the class size,

regardless of the school.

Demographics and class sizes are important to you because it becomes difficult to fit in with the

rest of the class if you are very different from them in terms of your age, or your experience or your

profession. While business schools (and employers) value diversity among MBA students, they are

really not looking for those who do not fit in with the rest of the class. Thus, you need to be different

but cannot be ‘too different’.

Accreditation

In the UK, three global bodies provide accreditation of business schools. While it is not

mandatory for a business school to have any accreditation, having it announces a minimum mark of

quality, especially to international students who may not be familiar with the landscape of the UK

business schools. In general, most of the business schools should have accreditation from at least one

of the following three bodies, though many schools are moving towards triple accreditation (viz.

accreditation from all the three bodies). While the three bodies are based in different parts of the

world, they accredit business schools globally.

a. AACSB (http :// www . aacsb . edu / ) : The Association of Advanced Collegiate Schools of

Business is a US-based organization that accredits the entire business school. Its headquarters

are in Tampa, Florida. Thus, AACSB accreditation indicates that the business school is

accredited and, therefore, by virtue of such school-level accreditation, all the programmes

offered by the business school (including the MBA) are accredited.

b. EQUIS (http :// www . efmd . org / index . php / accreditation -/ equis ): This is the business school

accreditation standard belonging to a body called EFMD, which is based in Brussels,

Belgium. Like AACSB, EQUIS also offers accreditation at the school level.

c. AMBA (www . mbaworld . com ): This organization offers accreditation at the MBA programme

level – it does not accredit the entire school. Thus, only an MBA programme can be AMBA

accredited, not the whole business school. AMBA is based in London, UK.

Page | 23

It is important to be aware of a few salient features about accreditation.

Accreditation defines certain minimum quality standards for a programme: thus, it defines a

baseline in quality that is achieved by accredited schools. Above this baseline, there can be

wide variations in quality, even among accredited schools, depending on the quality of the

faculty, class mix, research focus, etc.

While AACSB and EQUIS accredit at the school level, AMBA accredits at the MBA

programme level. AMBA considers the MBA to be a post-experience degree and therefore

requires that all schools submitting their MBA for accreditation have a minimum experience

requirement of 2-3 years. Therefore, many reputed schools in international markets are

ineligible for AMBA accreditation of their MBA programmes – some such notable schools

include Harvard, Wharton, IIM, XLRI, etc. However, since the UK MBA market is a well-

established post-experience market, AMBA accreditation does not face any such issues in the

UK.

Accreditation is a hygiene factor for the ranking of UK business schools by organizations

such as the Financial Times (FT) and The Economist. These organizations do not rank

schools that are not accredited by at least one of the three bodies mentioned above. However,

simply having more accreditations has no impact on the rankings.

Rankings

They are important to the outside world because, in the absence of a detailed programme quality

guide, they become a simple barometer to assess the quality of an MBA programme. The two key

rankings relevant for the UK market are the FT ranking

(http :// rankings . ft . com / businessschoolrankings / rankings ) and the ‘Which MBA?’ ranking from The

Economist (http :// www . economist . com / whichmba ). Both use different parameters for ranking MBA

schools and so the same school receives different rankings from these two publications.

Like any set of data, rankings can be twisted by schools to project a different image of their

school. It is important that you, as a potential customer of the school’s services, spend some time

Page | 24

understanding how the FT and Economist arrive at the rankings to judge for yourself whether or not

the parameters used for creating the ranking are really relevant to your personal circumstances.

Thus, while rankings should be a factor in your school selection, they should not be the only or

even the most important factor in your selection.

Eligibility criteria (work experience and bachelor degree)

Work experience

Most of the business schools in the UK require a minimum of three years of professional work

experience after the first university degree (bachelor degree) to be eligible to apply to their MBA

programmes. Some schools accept less work experience provided your academic performance in the

bachelor degree is stellar. Part-time work experience is considered if it is substantial; however,

student internships or college project work are generally not considered relevant work experience.

If you have more than three years of work experience, you will be eligible to apply to almost any

school in the UK. However, if you have worked for less than three years on the date of application,

you will need to select specific schools (using the individual school profiles in this guide) that will be

ready to consider your application.

Bachelor degree

Most of the business schools in the UK require MBA candidates to have a ‘good’ first degree

from a university. Usually it means a full-time university education of 3-4 years after the twelfth

grade (12–13 years of school-level study). Moreover, the schools expect an ‘Honours’ academic

performance in the first degree – meaning a high GPA/percentage of more than 60%. Some schools

will consider you even if you have not had marks of 60% and some other schools will consider you

even if you have not had a university education, provided you can demonstrate solid achievement-

oriented professional work experience of five years or more. If you have a good first degree you will

be eligible to apply to any of the UK schools. If not, then, depending on the level of your work

experience, you may be eligible to apply to some select schools; the individual school profiles in this

guide will help you to identify appropriate schools.

Page | 25

Admissions process and GMAT

Most of the UK schools do not require GMAT, though an increasing number prefer you to have

it. However, some UK schools have GMAT as a mandatory requirement.

In general, the admission process for most of the schools includes the following:

a. Compulsory documents required. Almost all the schools will require you to submit the

following compulsory documents (either online or in paper copies):

Completed application form

A Personal Statement explaining why you want to study an MBA

A copy of your latest CV

A copy of your passport

Two references: Most of the UK schools will ask for either two academic references or

one academic and one professional reference. It is only when you can demonstrate that it

is not possible for you to secure an academic reference (e.g. because you graduated long

ago and have lost contact with your university) that two professional references will be

accepted.

Test results for English Proficiency test: Accepted tests are IELTS, TOEFL, the Pearson

test of English language or other equivalent tests. A certain minimum score is expected

and this is shown in the individual school profiles.

b. Additional documents. In addition to the compulsory documents above, some schools require

the following additional documents:

GMAT score – While there is no specified minimum score, the schools expect a

minimum of 550. Most of the schools also indicate the average GMAT score of the

previous class that can serve as a reference point for you. The school profiles show

you this score.

Essays – In addition to the personal statement, some schools will require you to

complete additional essays. These essays allow the schools to understand you as a

person. They should be treated very seriously and more so in cases where your

GMAT score is not very high.

Page | 26

c. The admission process. Most schools will follow the stages below, with the cut-off being the

application deadline (either a staged cut-off, or a rolling cut-off, or no cut-off – see the next

KFC section titled ‘Application Deadline’ for an explanation of these terms):

Fill in an online application form (very few schools have a paper-based application

process)

Send the necessary documentation to the school, including the scores for English

language and GMAT (where necessary).

The school makes an initial decision based on the documents and invites you for an

interview

The interview is in person – either with a member of the faculty or an alumnus. If a

personal interview is impractical, then a telephone interview is arranged.

Based on the results of the interview the school makes you an offer, for you to accept

before the deadline by paying a holding deposit.

Application deadline

There are three kinds of selection deadlines that the schools in the UK follow:

Staged deadline. This means there are 3-4 application deadlines in a year for admission to the

programme in the following year. Thus, for a programme starting in September 2012, the first

staged deadline could be October 2011, followed by February 2012, with a final deadline of

April 2012. The school will wait until October 2011 before making a decision on all

applications received up to October 2011. Decisions on applications received from October

2011 to February 2012 will be made in February. Thus, within a stage, it does not matter

when you apply; however, if you miss a stage deadline, you will need to wait till the next

deadline before a decision on your application is taken. Schools that have a staged deadline

process usually have their final deadline around six months before the start of the programme.

Rolling deadline. As the name indicates, the school makes a decision on applications as and

when they receive them. These schools usually have a final deadline about two months before

the start of the programme.

Page | 27

No deadline. These schools have no application deadline and you can apply whenever you

like.

Depending on your personal circumstances (e.g. availability of finance, family support, etc), you

will probably be working on your own set of deadlines for applications, which will dictate the choice

of schools that you can apply to.

Unless you have special circumstances, it is recommended that you apply as early as possible,

especially if you are looking for university/campus accommodation.

Location of the school

The location of the school (i.e. the city, town or village where the campus is situated) is to be

seen as a trade-off between the cost of living and access to large employment clusters in the UK. A

rural or small town location will be less expensive in terms of the cost of living whereas big cities

such as London or Manchester have a higher cost of living. Village or small town locations of schools

will also mean idyllic and picturesque settings for your school, allowing you to explore the famous

countryside of the UK. However, such locations may be far from the employment clusters in large

cities such as London, Bristol, Manchester or Birmingham, where most of the UK employers are

based. Thus, a small town or village location of a school will probably mean you will incur travel

costs to get to these large centres for visits relating to employment interviews, internships or any other

kind of employment/career related search.

Most Indian applicants tend to forget this fact when selecting a school and preparing an

appropriate budget. If you intend to work in the UK and to meet with employers during your MBA

schedule, then the cost of employment-related travel for activities like interviews, meetings and events

– even with the cheapest train options available – can be significant. While some employers will

reimburse part of these costs, in most cases you will be expected to pay for these yourself.

You can use web-based tools such as www.travelmath.com to calculate the driving distance

between any two cities in the UK, to get an idea of how far your school is from big employment

clusters such as London, Manchester, Bristol or Birmingham. The individual school profiles in this

Page | 28

guide show the approximate distance between London (the largest employment market in the UK) and

the school.

Research versus practical focus of curriculum

In general, UK university education is research oriented – a characteristic which creeps into

MBA education as well for most of the business schools. However, most MBA programmes do a

good job of integrating practical insights with research-based curricula. What varies across the

schools is the weightage allocated to research-based teaching and practice-based teaching. If you are

focussed on learning, then you may be better off going to a school that is research heavy; on the other

hand, if your primary interest in doing an MBA is to increase your value in the job market, you may

wish to concentrate on schools that are practice oriented.

Duration of the full-time MBA programme

While the majority of the full-time MBA programmes in the UK have duration of 12 months,

there are some programmes that run for 15 months and others that run for 18–21 months. In addition

to the higher tuition fees and cost of living, longer programmes also mean a greater loss in terms of

lost earning opportunities.

The current student visa rules allow a foreign student on an MBA programme to stay on in the

UK on a student visa for up to 4 months beyond the end of the programme, if the programme duration

is 12 months or more. However, if the programme duration is less than 12 months (and more than 6

months), only 2 months of additional stay is allowed. While the UK MBA programmes are 1 year (12

months) or more in theory, some programmes are actually 11 months and 3 weeks in practice. When

you enquire at a school (or when you receive your offer letter), check carefully to ensure that the

stated programme duration is at least 12 months, otherwise you will only be allowed to stay in the UK

for an extra 2 months at the end of the programme.

Most of the UK programmes announce the results two months after the end of the final term and

the convocation ceremony (called a ‘graduation’ ceremony in the UK, where you receive your MBA

certificate) is another two months later. Therefore, you do need this ability to stay in the country for

Page | 29

up to 4 months after your programme finishes. These 4 months also give you time for job searches in

the UK.

In addition to these 4 months of extra stay (or 2 months if the programme duration is less than 12

months), the UK government used to allow foreign students to stay on for an extra two years after

graduation, under what was called the ‘post-study work visa’ rules. The idea was to enable students to

get valuable international work experience before returning to their home country, or to stay on in the

UK in permanent roles. Sadly, this visa provision is set to be scrapped from April 2012, meaning that

foreign students who graduate after April 2012 will only be allowed the standard stay of 4 months (or

2 months) in the country at the end of the programme.

Programme specialization

Some of the schools offer specialization in an MBA through the selection of electives, for

example an MBA in Tourism, Oil and Gas, Hospitality, Strategy, etc. However, it is important to note

that the MBA is a ‘general management’ programme that aims to create good business leaders. It is

not aimed at creating industry or function specialists. Most of the specialization offered by the schools

is through a choice of elective subjects; however, in a 12-month programme, selecting 2–3 subjects in

a particular area and studying them for 2–3 months each (which is the typical study duration of

individual subjects on an MBA) is hardly going to make you a functional/industry expert. The

electives allow you to explore your chosen specialization in some detail but you are not going to be

viewed as an expert. The MBA is best suited for general management and that is how business and

industry view the qualification. Therefore, having an MBA specialization in a particular industry or

function will not make you any more or any less employable compared to someone who has a general

MBA.

The school profiles show various specializations offered by the UK schools; however, I would

urge you to view such specialization in light of the comment above. In my view, the specialization

stream should not be an important factor for assessing the suitability of an MBA programme.

Career prospects

Page | 30

UK higher education in general, and the MBA in particular, is highly regarded in India and

Western Europe by MBA recruiters and employers. However, since the MBA is considered a post-

experience degree, with employers looking to recruit MBAs at middle management level, campus

recruitment events of the kind seen in India and the US do not exist in the UK. Business schools in the

UK train students in job search processes and provide valuable industry links, but the actual job

search is left to the individual student. Thus, if you decide to study an MBA in the UK, you should

not expect to find a job through campus recruitment. Very few schools have campus recruitment, and

even among these schools, less than 50% of the students find jobs in this way. The remaining students

find jobs through their own efforts. However, all the schools, regardless of whether they have campus

recruitment or not, focus quite heavily on training MBA students in the skills that will enable them to

find jobs. Such training includes, but is not limited to, CV writing, negotiations, interviewing,

networking, and own job search processes.

While most of the schools do not have campus recruitment, some schools do have campus

presentations by recruiters looking to recruit MBAs. Such presentations focus on the company and not

on any specific MBA opportunity. In most cases, such presentations ask the students to apply to the

company through the company website. Quite a few of these presentations take place in the first term

when students are still about 8–9 months away from completing their programmes, and are not

eligible to apply for an opportunity if one exists. Thus, such presentations offer students some insights

into the company and a valuable recruiter contact that can be exploited in the future, but are not really

an immediate job opportunity.

The school profiles listed in this guide will show you the schools that have campus recruitment

and/or campus presentations and the schools that don’t. However, most of the schools do not have

campus recruitment, so using this criterion to shortlist schools is not really relevant. Therefore, in the

KFC weightage table, I have recommended that you do not use this criterion to shortlist UK business

schools.

Scholarships and bursaries

Page | 31

Scholarships are provided on the basis of academic performance while bursaries are provided on

the basis of financial need. Most of the UK schools provide few scholarships and some scholarships

are given specifically to Indians. However, very few schools provide meaningful bursaries.

You should not rely on any support from scholarships and bursaries to fund your MBA as the

numbers are extremely limited and the value of such scholarships is less than 50% of the tuition fees.

The individual school profiles in this guide give an estimate of scholarships and bursaries provided by

individual schools.

Page | 32

Chapter 7: How to Shortlist UK MBA Using the Key Factors to Consider (KFC)

In order to help you shortlist UK schools based on your individual requirements, I have provided

in the Table 2 below, a ready reckoner of KFCs that shows you the variations across business schools

in the UK for a particular KFC, and the weightage that the KFC should carry in your decision making

process. This is based on feedback provided by students on UK MBA programmes. Naturally, it is not

a perfect science, but it is a very good starting point to help you arrive at a realistic shortlist of schools

that meet your requirements.

The term ‘weightage’ means the importance of that KFC in deciding whether the school should

be considered or not. A high weightage means it is an important factor to look at in selecting a school,

whereas a low weightage means it is not really necessary to agonise over that factor in the selection

process. This could be because either the factor is a very small part of the big picture (e.g. mobile

telephone charges are only a small part of your overall cost of living) OR it is common for all the

schools and there is very little you can do about it (e.g. the cost of 4 months of post-study stay is

common across all the schools so it has a low weightage in the overall shortlisting process).

Table 2 also shows the variation in a particular KFC across the UK schools. While the actual

KFC values are provided in the individual school profiles, a variation of ‘high’ means schools differ

from each other greatly on that factor. A ‘low’ variation means that all the schools are broadly similar

on that factor. Thus, a KFC that shows a high variation across schools but a low weightage for

shortlisting indicates that the schools differ widely from each other on that factor; however, it is not

an important factor in the final shortlisting and therefore you should not worry too much about such a

variation across schools in deciding your best school. On the other hand, a KFC with a high variation

and high weightage means that schools differ widely from each other and it is a very important factor

to be considered when shortlisting. Thus, you should spend considerable time researching schools

with that KFC profile. To help you decide which KFCs to spend more time on, the last column in the

table tells you whether or not you should be researching that KFC in more detail when shortlisting

schools.

Chapter 8: Preparing the Budget for Your MBA

While most of you will be very good at preparing budgets, it is important to be aware of key

budgetary costs that you are likely to incur during the course of your MBA programme. This is

especially important if you have never before stayed in or visited the UK as many of the expenses are

not obvious when you develop the initial budget, if you have had no UK experience beforehand. The

experience of many Indian students suggests that some of them are dealt a rude shock halfway

through the programme when they realise that their actual expenditure is way above what they

budgeted for.

As mentioned earlier in this guide, the current UK visa regulations require you to have certain

minimum bank balance towards your living expenses, in addition to your tuition fees. This is

currently set at GBP 5,400 if you intend to study at a school outside London or GBP 7,000 for

London-based schools. However, this should be treated as a visa guideline – the actual living cost for

the programme is higher than the above amounts. Thus, you need to prepare your own cash budget if

you do not want to run out of cash halfway through your MBA.

This section will help you develop a realistic budget for the duration of your MBA programme.

However, the exact cost of the programme will depend on your lifestyle as well. This section aims to

give you a realistic idea of what an average Indian student, studying on a full-time UK programme

that started in Sept 2010, spent during the course of the programme. Thus, the cost estimates are based

on 2010–11 expenditure. You should factor in about 5% inflation for every year thereafter.

Before setting out to develop your budget using the information in this section, it is important to

be mindful of the following salient points:

Do not expect to earn anything while on the programme – scholarships/bursaries are limited

and you will not get an opportunity to work while on the programme. Thus, the total budget

has to be funded through your own savings and/or loans from your home country. Some of

you will certainly receive some scholarships, but you should consider that as a bonus.

Page | 36

The budget that this guide allows you to develop is a ‘cash budget’. Thus, it does not take into

consideration your opportunity cost of ‘lost earnings’ in terms of salary loss when you leave

your job to study the MBA.

The budget heads are intended to help you identify the costs you will incur during your stay in

the UK – they exclude the cost of air travel to and from UK and the associated visa costs.

These should be added to the total budget as they will vary depending on your location before

the start of the MBA programme.

The budget section in this guide will allow you to develop a budget for a single person – if

you are married and/or have children, you will need to apply an uplift factor to some of the

budget heads. In particular, your food and accommodation expenses will almost double.

Since the government visa rules allow you to stay in the country for up to 4 months at the end

of your 12-month course, it is important to budget for these additional 4 months. Most

students tend to stay in the UK for these 4 months – primarily to search for a job – but do not

budget for this stay. Moreover, if you stayed in the university accommodation during your

programme, you will need to vacate that accommodation at the end of the 12 months,

meaning that for these additional 4 months you will need to budget for private (non-

university) accommodation. The following chapter in the guide gives you a clear indication of

costs associated with university accommodation as well as private accommodation. You

should use the private accommodation guide to budget for the last 4 months’ stay.

There are two specific expenses that Indian students do not think are important to budget for.

The first is socializing, for example picnics, eating out over the weekends, etc. While it is

voluntary, the intense group work in the MBA programme means it is difficult to resist peer

pressure to go out. Most of the Indian students interviewed confessed to going out once a

week, with an estimated bill of GBP 10–20 per outing. The second expense that is usually

forgotten (especially by students who enrol at schools outside London), is the travel related to

job interview/networking, mostly to London. The average return train ticket to London from

the north of the country, even with the student discount, is about GBP 50–60 per return trip

and you will probably be making 4–5 such trips in the later part of your programme.

Page | 37

Healthcare. Healthcare consultation in the UK is free for students (and their families) if you

are enrolled on a course which is 12 months or more, through the UK’s NHS (National Health

Service). Thus, you and your family will receive free healthcare consultation on all UK MBA

programmes and you do not have to budget for any consultation expenses. However, you will

have to pay for medicines and the current standard rate for prescription medicine is GBP 7.25

per prescription. Medicines for children under 16 years of age are free.

Schooling for children. If you have school-age children who accompany you to the UK, they

will get admission to state-funded schools in the UK completely free of charge. Thus, you do

not have to budget for children’s schooling unless you want them educated privately.

UK loans and paid internships. As an Indian national, you are not eligible for any loans or

government subsidy in the UK. Therefore, you should not prepare your budget for the MBA

in the hope of getting any form of subsidy. Moreover, unlike the US, the UK programmes do

not offer any paid internships – either within the school or outside.

Apply an inflationary factor of about 5% per year if you are developing budgets for

subsequent years, based on 2010-11 cost estimates.

Finally, a word of advice based on the experience of number of Indian students! However

good you may be in budgeting and however realistic you may think your budget is, you will

always end up spending more than you budgeted for.

The next chapter outlines each of the cost items that you need to budget for when planning to

study in the UK. For each cost item, I have provided an average range of expenditure that can help

you create an initial draft budget for studying in the UK.

Page | 38

Chapter 9: Budget Heads to Consider for Developing a Budget for a UK MBA

The key budget heads that Indian students will need to consider during their stay in the UK are

detailed below. These exclude the cost of the UK visa and airfare, which will be additional. Each

budget head also provides, where appropriate, some tips for Indian students. While some of these tips

may sound either trifle or flippant, the experience of current Indian students in the UK suggests that

these tips – if managed correctly at the beginning – can significantly improve the student experience

and reduce the cost of the stay.

Tuition fees

These range from GBP 12,000 to GBP 50,000 for the duration of the programme, depending on

the school chosen. Moreover, UK MBA programmes have historically increased their fees every year

by 5% to 10%. The tuition fees will be the biggest component of the overall cost of the programme.

Tips for Indians

Apply to your selected schools well in advance and accept the offer by paying the deposit if

you really intend to study at the school. Most of the schools raise their fees around summer

time. If you accept the offer and pay the deposit before the fees are raised, you can get away

with paying the old fee rate (lower fees) while other students, who enrol later, may be

required to pay the higher fees.

Check what is included in the tuition fees. Schools include various goodies like laptop, books,

breakfast and lunch, and an international study week as part of the tuition fees. A school that

charges higher tuition fees but includes many of the above may actually turn out to be cheaper

than a school that charges slightly lower tuition fees, but requires you to pay for all the extras.

The school profiles in this guide provide you with a good indication of current

inclusions/exclusions in the tuition fees.

Accommodation

There are two kinds of accommodation available to international students:

Page | 39

University accommodation

Most of the business schools offer university accommodation within walking distance of the

business school. The university accommodation consists of rooms in ‘halls of residence’, with a

shared kitchen for about 5–6 rooms together. Some rooms are en suite, i.e. they have a private toilet

and shower whereas other rooms have shared toilet/shower facilities (like student hostels in India).

Some universities also provide university accommodation for married couples; these are usually self-

contained apartments. The cost of the campus accommodation usually ranges from GBP 70 per

week (for a single room, sharing a toilet and kitchen with students in other rooms) to about

GBP 100 per week (for a single room, en suite toilet and shared kitchen) to GBP 150 per week

(for married accommodation). These charges include utilities such as electricity, water and other

taxes. In addition, the university accommodation also provides built-in wi-fi internet connectivity free

of charge.

University accommodation is usually limited. It is also meant for all university students and not

just the students of the business school, though some schools reserve special accommodation for

international MBA students. As universities mainly offer undergraduate courses (bachelor

programmes) and these programmes start earlier than the MBA, Indian students often find that the

university accommodation is already taken up by undergraduate students. To avoid this

disappointment, apply to the programmes early and reserve your university accommodation as soon as

you confirm the offer. While the business schools are usually not involved in sourcing

accommodation for students, most of the universities have an international office that will help in

finding the right accommodation, either on the university campus or outside.

In most cases, the university accommodation is contracted for 50 weeks so if you leave early,

you will still need to pay for all the 50 weeks. If you need to stay longer (and most Indian students

stay on for at least 4 months after the programme), you will need to find your own off-campus

accommodation after 50 weeks.

Tips for Indians

Book your campus accommodation early.

Page | 40

If you choose campus accommodation, wait until the middle of the programme to decide on

the location for your off-campus accommodation at the end of the programme. Most students

tend to move to London to facilitate their job search. Many students also do their dissertation/

internship projects with companies in a different location from where their school is based,

and therefore move out of the campus accommodation.

Off-campus accommodation

The non-university accommodation is called ‘off-campus’ accommodation. Usually students find

it through the university’s international office or, increasingly, through social networking sites. Off-

campus accommodation is shared with students who may or may not be part of your MBA

programme. It is either a shared apartment/flat or a shared house, so you get a room to yourself but

share the kitchen and the toilet with others.

The cost of off-campus accommodation is as follows:

The average room rent per person, with about 4–5 people sharing the house/flat is about GBP

250–300 per month. However, the equivalent cost in London is about GBP 400–500 per

person.

However, unlike the university accommodation, you also need to pay for your water,

electricity and gas. This comes to about GBP 20–30 per person per month.

In addition, you will also need to pay for internet connectivity which comes to about GBP 5

per person per month.

The final expense for off-campus accommodation is called the ‘council tax’. This is a charge

that the occupier pays to the local municipal council for maintenance of the roads, street

lighting, etc. The good news is that, as students, you are exempt from paying council taxes.

Tips for Indians

More than the school’s international office, use social networking sites such as Facebook and

LinkedIn to connect with fellow students who may be starting on the programme with you.

This allows you to form a group that will stay together, though one of you will have to arrive

Page | 41

in the UK earlier to find off-campus accommodation. Finding UK off-campus

accommodation online and from a different country is not practical.

Do not keep a TV in the house/flat. You will not find time to watch it anyway and you will

need to pay a TV licence fee for having a TV in the house. The current charges are about

GBP 125 per year, and you can be fined if you do not have a licence. In addition, you will

also need to pay about GBP 30 per month for receiving channels on your TV – unless you are

happy with watching a handful of ‘free to air’ channels.

Microwave. This may sound really trivial, but ensure that you have access to a microwave in

whatever accommodation you choose. Given the work pressures of the MBA curriculum, you

will be hard pressed to cook your own meals regularly. Most Indian students buy frozen

meals from supermarkets and cook them in a microwave. If you do not have access to a

microwave, you will either have to cook your own meals or eat out regularly.

Distance from the campus. Most Indian students walk to their school. If the accommodation is

a long way from the school, you will either need to buy a bicycle or use public transport.

Also, in the first term, it is likely that you will finish your day quite late and you do not want

to be walking back home in the cold and dark winter weather.

Laundry

Laundry facilities are usually not included in campus accommodation. Students have to use

communal laundry facilities (machines provided in a shared facility area) and the usual usage charges

are GBP 2 per wash and GBP 1 per dryer. For off-campus accommodation, a washing machine is

usually included but the cost of using it (e.g. water, electricity, etc) is reflected in your utilities bill.

Food expenses

While the UK has a large population of Asians, and therefore Asian food and groceries are more

easily available compared with other European countries, Indian students must remember that the UK

is not India. The culinary habits in the UK are very different to those in India and, consequently, the

cuisine is also different. Therefore, Indian food – if eaten out in a restaurant – is expensive. Most

Page | 42

Indian students cook their own meals, or use the microwave to cook frozen food bought from local

supermarkets or Asian stores.

The big supermarket chains (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons) are nationally present,

and you will find a shop near you, wherever you stay, though many of these will sell limited Indian

groceries. Many of these chains also provide home delivery for internet orders above a certain

minimum level of expenditure. Students in schools that are situated in locations far-removed from the

city centres (e.g. Cranfield, Lancaster, etc) pool their grocery requirements and place online orders for

home delivery. If you want to buy Indian groceries, you will have to find an Asian store; while they

are common in large cities, they are not so easy to find in smaller towns and villages.

The typical expense for groceries would be about GBP 70–100 per month for basic groceries

(vegetarian, non-alcoholic items). If you eat meat and/or drink alcohol, then the grocery costs may

rise up to GBP 150–200 per month. In addition, eating out will cost about GBP 7–10 per person.

Tips for Indians

Learn to cook – this will bring down your expenses significantly.

Shop from major supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons as they are

usually cheaper than the local corner shops.

Most of the business schools provide free tea/coffee vending machines for MBA students.

Travel expenses – travelling from the residence to the school and back

Most students walk to the school, especially if they are in campus accommodation. Even if you

are off campus, most of the business schools are in smaller cities where you can walk to the school in

about 30 minutes. Some of the other options are using a bicycle, using a school shuttle service (some

schools provide this) and using public buses that cost about GBP 1.00–1.70 per trip (longer-term

weekly or monthly passes are cheaper). Thus, most students do not spend any money on local travel.

The only exceptions are business schools in London, which have very little campus accommodation

so students tend to live some distance away. Students studying at London schools tend to spend about

GBP 100 per month commuting to and from the school, using the London public transport system.

Tips for Indians

Page | 43

Find accommodation within walking distance of the school. A one-way walk time of 30

minutes is quite acceptable. The exception to the above would be London where

accommodation near the school can be very expensive. Students in London tend to use public

transport for commuting to the school.

Travel expenses – travelling for job interviews, career events, networking, etc

One of the disadvantages of studying in a school that is based in a smaller town or city is that

you will need to spend money to travel to big cities (mostly London) for career opportunities, as this

is where the employers are based. You will need to travel for meetings and to participate in events and

fairs, etc. While some of this travel may be funded by the school, you will need to bear the majority of

such travel costs. This will be required in term 3 in particular. You should budget for about GBP 50

per trip with about 4–5 such trips during the course of your programme. You can use

www.travelmath.com to assess the travel distance between large cities.

Obviously, students based in London are not likely to incur this cost.

Books

While some schools include books as part of their tuition fees, most schools do not. You will be

expected to buy some books, particularly those classified as ‘core’ books or ‘recommended’ books.

While many of these books will be available in the school library, not enough copies will be available

for everyone. You should budget about GBP 300–500 for purchasing books.

Tips for Indians

Check with your school if any books are included as part of your tuition fees.

Check with your school if they allow free online access to previous editions of these books.

While the library will stock the latest edition, many schools allow free online access to

previous editions.

Do not be in a hurry to buy books – you should buy them only as a last resort (and never

before starting the programme). You will be surprised at how you can go through your course

without needing to buy books.

Page | 44

If you do have to buy books, buy them second hand from online sites such as Amazon, from

local book stores near the school, or from your seniors who will be happy to sell them to you

at significantly reduced prices.

Clothing

Northern parts of the UK can become cold in winter, with temperatures dropping to -20 C and

snow for 2–3 months. In such cases, winter clothing brought from India does not help – it only adds to

your registered baggage weight without solving your problem in the UK. It is best to buy winter

clothing in the UK from budget stores such as Primark, Asda, etc. The clothes you get will be more

suited to the UK climate and will still not be expensive.

You should budget about GBP 100–150 to buy winter clothing in the UK. In particular, you will

need to buy a winter jacket or coat, inner thermals, hand gloves and boots to keep hands and feet

warm and dry in wet or snowy weather.

Tips for Indians

Travel light from India.

Buy winter clothing from budget chains such as Primark, Tesco, Asda, etc.

Buy winter clothing during the sales periods when the prices are cut by as much as 50%. The

key sales periods are Christmas/ New Year and Easter (March/April), though some chains run

promotions all through the year.

As a minimum you will need a winter jacket or coat, gloves and boots. Depending on your

location, you may also need inner thermals.

Printing and stationery

You will need to print or photocopy case studies, assignments, dissertation projects, etc. In

particular, schools require hard copy submissions of the final dissertation in duplicate. The usual cost

of photocopying or printing is about GBP 0.04 per black and white A4 copy and GBP 0.08 per colour

A4 copy. You will also need to buy printing paper. In general, you should budget for about GBP 50–

Page | 45

70 for such expenses, though many schools provide you with some credit towards this expense. In

some schools, printing and stationery are free for MBA students.

Haircuts

This may seem trivial and many Indians do not budget for this, but a haircut in the UK is very

expensive compared to India. It costs about GBP 10–15 per haircut for men, and about GBP 20–25 for

women. Assuming a cut every two months, you should budget for about GBP 125 for men and GBP

175–200 for women.

Laptop

A personal laptop is highly recommended, especially if you are staying off campus, away from

the school, as you will need it to work from home. Even in big schools there are not enough

computing facilities for PCs to be made available to all students all the time on the campus. While

some schools provide a laptop or an iPad as part of tuition fees, most schools don’t. If you decide to

buy your laptop in the UK, you should budget for about GBP 400 for a mid-range laptop (excluding

the carry bag which will cost about GBP 50–100).

Mobile and telephone charges

Most Indian students use ‘pay as you go’ (PAYG) mobiles to call back home. PAYG phones

have no contract and you can cancel the phone number whenever you want. (The opposite of PAYG

is a contract phone, which you have to keep for a minimum period of 18–24 months.) Contract phone

companies provide free phones whereas, under PAYG, you will need to buy your own phone.

Excluding the cost of the handset, Indian students spend about GBP 20–30 per month on calling back

home. There are many mobile phone companies providing cheap international calls, such as Lebara

Mobile, Lyca mobile and a number of internet-based providers.

Tips for Indians

Page | 46

If you bring your own phone from India, ensure that it is not network locked otherwise it will

not work in the UK. If it is network locked, you can unlock it in the UK for GBP 5.00 (any

shop selling handsets will be able to unlock it for you).

Socializing

This is completely optional; however, as you will be working intensively in close-knit groups

during your MBA course work, it will be difficult for you to repeatedly refuse to participate in social

activities such as eating out with the group, especially if your group includes Europeans or

Americans. Most Indian students on the programme succumb to the pressure. In addition, given the

intensity of course work, you will probably want to go out and let yourself go once in a while. You

should budget about GBP 15–20 per outing with about two outings every month.

Leisure travel, picnics etc

The UK is famous for its scenic beauty. Most Indians who come to study in the UK take time out

for sight-seeing. It is difficult to pencil an amount against this, but you should plan for this activity in

your budget as most of the schools organize sight-seeing trips for their students. In many schools, the

students plan such activities themselves.

Tips for Indians

Avoid ‘spur of the moment’ activities. You should plan such activities as much in advance as

possible. The difference between the ‘future’ rate and the ‘spot’ rate for train or air tickets and

hotels could be as much as 50% in certain instances.

International study week

Many of the schools include an international study week as part of their academic curriculum.

During this week, students are taken to a different country on an industrial visit. Many schools make

this trip compulsory, in which case almost all costs are included in the tuition fees (except personal

expenses). However, some schools make it optional, in which case you will need to pay for the trip,

Page | 47

including the visa and airfare. However, even in such optional cases, the accommodation and meals

are usually provided.

International exchange programmes

Some schools, for example Hult business school and Bradford School of Management, allow

exchange programmes with other international schools and campuses. While you do not need to pay

any additional tuition fees for such exchanges, you will need to pay for your own airfare, visa,

accommodation and meals if you decide to move to another campus.

Sports fees and sports attire

The tuition fees do not include the use of sports and gym facilities for most of the programmes

and you need to budget separately for them. The average monthly membership cost for a sports club

or gym is about GBP 40 per month.

Page | 48

Chapter 10: Budget Ready Reckoner

To help you create a draft budget on the go, I have put together a summary of expenses incurred

during the course of a full-time MBA programme in the UK. These are shown in Table 3 below. This

table will help you create a draft budget as your starting point. Please note the following key tips in

developing the draft budget:

Some additional expenses are not shown and will need to be budgeted for – the airfare from

your country of residence to the UK, visa expenses, the airfare and visa in case you decide on

a campus rotation (where offered). These are not included in the table below as they will vary

greatly depending on your current location.

Some expenses shown in the table below are ‘one time’, some are ‘per month’ and some are

‘per week’. All expenses shown are in GBP and use the actual cost incurred by students

enrolled in Sept 2010.

You should apply about 5% inflation factor per year for subsequent years.

Finally, remember to develop the budget for the entire duration of your stay in the UK –

which will include the additional 2-4 months at the end of the programme. For these

additional months, you will not be allowed to use university accommodation and therefore

you will have to budget for off-campus accommodation.

PART 2 – DIRECTORY OF THE TOP 50 MBA PROGRAMMES IN THE UK

Background

All the profiles in this guide follow the same template so that it is easy for you to compare

various programmes. All the profiles featured include the latest available information for all KFCs.

The school profiles have been split into three sections, and within each section the schools are

arranged in alphabetical order. The three sections are as follows:

Section 1: Schools that require applicants to have a minimum of three years of work

experience, and will not consider an applicant with less than 3 years of experience.

Section 2: Schools that will consider applicants with less than 3 years of work experience.

Section 3: Business schools that currently do not offer a full-time MBA.

I would like to highlight a key point to remember about interpreting the rankings shown in the

school profiles. Both the rankings shown in the profile (FT – 2011 and The Economist – 2010) relate

to the school ranking ‘within the UK’. These organizations do not provide a country-specific ranking

so I have arranged the UK schools in the global ranking in order of the ranking in the UK. For

example, a school may be ranked eighteenth in the world, but it may be only the second UK school

among these top 18 schools. In such a case, the school profile listed here would show its rank as 2.

Some of the terms that have been used in the school profiles are explained below:

NA – Wherever this term is shown against a KFC in the school profile, it means that the data

for that KFC, specific to the school, is not available and/or the KFC is not relevant to the

school.

No – When this term is shown against a KFC in a school profile, it means the school does not

require that KFC (e.g. if it is shown against GMAT, it means the school does not require you

to take GMAT).

Generally No – When this term is shown against a KFC in a school profile, it means that

while generally the school does not require that KFC, it may ask some candidates to show the

evidence (especially those who are not strong in other areas of their application). For

Page | 54

example, if a school profile states that GMAT is ‘Generally No’, it means that while the

school does not generally require GMAT, it may ask some candidates to take the test.
