The costume regarded as national dress is based on clothing worn by Welsh countrywomen during the early nineteenth century, which was a striped flannel petticoat, worn under a flannel open-fronted bed gown, with an apron, shawl and kerchief or cap.

Here we have some children from lower KS2 performing a traditional dance called ‘Jac y do’. This means ‘Jackdaw’.

A1 In lines facing partners, forward and back 4 steps. Then forward four steps to partner and change places.

A2  Repeat A1 back to original places. B1 Couple 1 give both hands to partner and slip step

down the centre of the set to the bottom and back.  B2 Couple 1 cast out, everybody follows. Couple 1

form a bridge at the bottom of the set. Everyone else in turn meets their partner at the bottom of the set, takes inside hand, and leads up under the bridge to re-form the set with a new couple in top position.

Repeat the dance 4 times with a new top couple each time.

A line of 4 girls face a line of 4 boys Holding hands the girls move anticlockwise

around the boys and return to 1st position Now the boys move clockwise around the

girls and return to 1st position Girl and boy partners hold hands and move

clockwise – (as the boys did) The first couple hold hands (both hands) and

swing around as they move down the gap and end up being the last couple.
