Founded in 2013 by Artistic Director Carrie Tennant, the Vancouver Youth Choir (VYC) provides a space for advanced young singers to develop their artistry in a creative and supportive community.

Now expanded to include over 160 singers in three choir levels, members of the VYC choirs represent eight municipalities in the area, including 15 elementary schools, 10 different high schools and five different post-secondary institutions. From engineering students to high school basketball players, and from fiddle players to future chefs, the singers of Vancouver Youth Choir are united by their love of the choral art form and their desire to contribute to their communities.

Now in their fifth season, VYC has quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the Canadian choral community.

Nationally, VYC is now recognized as among Canada’s finest youth choirs, having recently won first prize in its category in the 2017 National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs. Internationally, as well, the choir is fast gaining visibility: VYC represented Canada at the 2016 International Choral Festival in Missoula (Montana); and it will be attending, by invitation, the Festival International Choral en Provence in July 2018. VYC has been featured on CBC radio, at the Push International Performing Arts Festival, and this March will present a concert under the baton of five-time Grammy award winning conductor Charles Bruffy.

VYC is proud to be in its fourth season as an associate choir with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, where they have the opportunity to collaborate with and perform alongside this fine ensemble.

P A C I F I C A S I N G E R S

Pacifica Singers is a select vocal ensemble which exists as part of the Vancouver Chamber Choir organization. The ensemble performs with Jon Washburn and the Vancouver Chamber Choir on three or four concert programmes each season and also presents one or two independent concerts with its own conductor, Fiona Blackburn.

Pacifica Singers provides an ideal performance venue for experienced and motivated choral singers whose goal is to make music at a very high level. By providing direct exposure

to the world of professional music making, it is an experience of great value for singers intending to make a career in music. Current members live throughout the lower mainland, with many serving as conductors, music educators, and/or professional singers in their communities.

Most rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings, with occasional weekend rehearsals and additional dress rehearsals as required. For more information or to schedule an audition time, please email [email protected].

Johann Sebastian Bach Ehre sei dir, Gott, gesungen

Th e Weihnachts-Oratorium (Christmas Oratorio) is the largest and most important work to which Bach gave the “oratorio” designation, but it isn’t really a single work at all: it is a series of six cantatas intended to be performed at the church services of six important dates during the period between Christmas and Epiphany. Th e actual fi rst performances were on December 25, 26, and 27 of 1734 and New Year’s Day, the following Sunday and Epiphany in the new year of 1735. Th e usual shape of a Bach cantata is 1) a big opening chorus, 2) several solo recitatives, arias and duets, 3) a closing chorale. Ehre sei dir, Gott, gesungen is the big opening chorus of the fi fth cantata in the Christmas Oratorio, intended for the fi rst Sunday after New Year’s.

Ehre sei dir, Gott, gesungen, Glory be to Th ee, oh Lord!dir sei Lob und Dank bereit’. Let praise and thanksgiving be prepared for Th ee.

Dich erhebet alle Welt, All the world extols Th ee,weil dir unser Wohl gefällt, because our wellbeing is pleasing to Th ee,weil anheut unser aller Wunsch gelungen, because all our desire this day is fulfi lled, weil uns dein Segen so herrlich erfreut. because Th y blessing fi lls us so gloriously with joy.

Johann Sebastian Bach Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140

Bach’s Cantata No. 140, Wachet auf (Sleepers, wake), was written in 1731. Nicolai’s beautiful hymn on which it is based deals with the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, and turns later to a description of heavenly Zion. In the first movement the chorale melody is presented in long notes by the soprano, under which the lower voices weave a vivid contrapuntal texture inspired by the words rather than by the hymn’s melody. The orchestra adds a completely independent accompaniment picturing the approach of the heavenly bridegroom and the eager anticipation of the maidens. Out of these various elements grows a sound combination of overwhelming sensuous beauty. In the magnificent second chorale arrangement (No. 4) the hymn tune intoned by the tenors is joined by a completely different violin melody of a caressing sweetness rarely to be found in Bach’s cantatas; this depicts the graceful procession of the maidens going out to meet Jesus, the heavenly bridegroom. In the duets preceding and following this chorale arrangement the hymn tune is not used, and the pledges that Christ and the soul exchange sound not very different from those of earthly lovers. The first achieves a mood of sweet poignancy with the help of the bright cantilena intoned by a violino piccolo. The second, with its similarity of motives in both voices, points far into the future, to the duets between husband and wife in Haydn’s Creation and Beethoven’s Fidelio.

(from Karl Geiringer’s Johann Sebastian Bach: The Culmination of an Era)

Antonio VivaldiMagnificat, RV 610/611

The Magnificat is a well-known choral work of the eccentric but brilliant Italian Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi. Like the rest of his sacred choral works, this Magnificat was probably composed for performance at the Ospedale della Pietà, an orphanage for girls in Venice which was famous for the musical education it provided. Vivaldi was choirmaster there from 1703 to 1735, a fact which may account for the prominence of soprano and alto voices in his church music. It was Vivaldi’s custom to divide the Magnificat text into separate movements, each consisting of a single sentence (or even a single phrase) repeated as often as necessary to fill out the requirements of the music. As always, Vivaldi’s musical style is characterized by vivacious rhythms and melodies that are as enjoyable to perform as they are to hear.

In music, the term Magnificat is used to represent various settings of the Canticle of the Virgin which begins with the words, “My soul doth magnify the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.” (Luke 1:46-55). The Canticle is Mary’s joyful utterance at the fulfillment of the prophesy of the Angel Gabriel: “And behold you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.” (Luke 1:31) The liturgical Magnificat has been used as part of the Daily Service of the Roman Church since the beginning of the 6th century and at Vespers in England for over 800 years. The text consists of 10 verses from St. Luke with the addition of the doxology Gloria Patri (Glory be to the Father...) which is added to the ends of psalms and canticles in the liturgy.

Magnificat anima mea Dominum. My soul magnifies the Lord.

Et exultavit spiritus meus And my spirit has rejoicedin Deo salutari meo. in God my saviour.

Quia respexit humilitatem For he has regarded the low estateancillæ suæ: of his handmaiden: Ecce enim ex hoc, For behold, beatam me dicent omnes generationes. all generations shall call me blessed.

Quia fecit mihi magna For he who is mightyqui potens est has done great things to meet sanctum nomen ejus and holy is his name.

Et misericordia ejus a progenie And his mercy is on them whoin progenies timentibus eum. fear him from generation to generation.

Fecit potentiam in brachio suo: He has shown strength with his arm;dispersit superbos he has scattered the proud, mente cordis sui. even the arrogant of heart.

Deposuit potentes de sede He has deposed the mighty from their seats,et exaltavit humiles. and exalted the humble.

Esurientes implevit bonis: The hungry he has filled with good things,et divites dimisit inanes. and the rich he has sent empty away.

Suscepit Israel puerum suum, He has helped his servant Israel, recordatus misericordiæ suæ. in remembrance of his mercy.

Sicut locutus est ad patres nostros, As it was spoken to our fathers,Abraham et semini ejus in sæcula. to Abraham and his seed for ever.

Gloria Patri, et Filio, Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,et Spiritui Sancto. and to the Holy Spirit.Sicut erat in principio, As it was in the beginning,et nunc, et semper, is now, and ever shall be,et in sæcula sæculorum, Amen. world without end, Amen.

A CHRISTMAS SING-AROUND

This “Sing-Around” is a collection of carols and Christmas songs for tonight’s three choirs, orchestra and audience to pass back and forth among themselves. O come, o come, Emmanuel is a version of the 13th-century Latin chant Veni, veni, Emanuel, one of the so-called “O” antiphons of Advent; the English text by J.M. Neale is 19th-century and the arrangement by John William Trotter is 21st-century. The Wexford Carol is a traditional Irish melody whose text can be traced back to English sources in the 19th century; Wexford is a town and county in the southeast corner of Ireland, south of Dublin. What child is this? is a 19th-century text set to a familiar 17th-century English folk tune known as Greensleeves; it was first arranged by John Stainer in 1871. Here we come a-wassailing is what the Oxford Book of Carols calls a “luck-visit” song, sung door to door by happy wassailers looking for a beer or other suitably-seasonal quaff; the tune has been traced back to 19th-century Manchester and Yorkshire. Get down to Bethlehem is a lively spiritual on the familiar theme of shepherds hastening to the site of the holy birth. O come all ye faithful is the beloved English version of the 18th-century Latin hymn Adeste fideles; this equally-familiar 20th-century arrangement with its glorious final descant is that of Sir David Willcocks, famously sung by the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge in their televised Ceremonies of Lessons and Carols. (Parts where the audience is encouraged to sing are marked in the texts by ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.)

John William Trotter O come, o come Emmanuel

(With audience)

(Choirs alone)O come, o come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel,That mourns in lowly exile here, Until the Son of God appear. Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come thou dayspring, come, and cheerOur spirits by thine advent here.Disperse the gloomy clouds of nightAnd death’s dark shadows put to flight,(With audience) REJOICE, REJOICE, EMMANUEL SHALL COME TO THEE, O ISRAEL.

O COME, THOU KEY OF DAVID, COME,AND OPEN WIDE OUR HEAVENLY HOME;MAKE SAFE THE WAY THAT LEADS ON HIGH,AND CLOSE THE PATH TO MISERY. REJOICE, REJOICE, EMMANUEL SHALL COME TO THEE, O ISRAEL. SHALL COME TO THEE, O ISRAEL.

John William TrotterWexford Carol

(Choirs alone)Good people all, this Christmas time,Consider well and bear in mindWhat our good God for us has doneIn sending his beloved sonWith Mary holy we should pray,To God with love this Christmas DayIn Bethlehem upon that morn,There was a blessed Messiah born.

The night before that happy tide,The noble Virgin and her guideWere long time seeking up and downTo find a lodging in the town.

But mark right well what came to passFrom every door repelled, alas,As was foretold, their refuge allWas but a humble ox’s stall.

Near Bethlehem did shepherds keepTheir flocks of lambs and feeding sheepTo whom God’s angel did appearWhich put the shepherds in great fearArise and go, the angels saidTo Bethlehem, be not afraidFor there you’ll find, this happy mornA princely babe, sweet Jesus, born.

With thankful heart and joyful mindThe shepherds went the babe to findAnd as God’s angel had foretoldThey did our Saviour Christ beholdWithin a manger he was laidAnd by his side a virgin maidAttending on the Lord of LifeWho came on earth to end all strife.

Traditional English What Child is this?

(With audience)

(Choirs alone)What child is this, who, laid to rest,On Mary’s lap is sleeping?Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,While shepherds watch are keeping?(With audience)THIS, THIS IS CHRIST THE KING,WHOM SHEPHERDS GUARD AND ANGELS

SING:HASTE, HASTE TO BRING HIM LAUD,THE BABE, THE SON OF MARY.

(Choirs alone)Why lies He in such mean estate,Where ox and ass are feeding?Good Christians, fear, for sinners hereThe silent Word is pleading.

Nails, spears shall pierce him through, the cross he bore for me, for you.Hail, hail the Word made flesh, the Babe, the Son of Mary.

(With audience)SO BRING HIM INCENSE, GOLD, AND MYRRH,COME, PEASANT, KING, TO OWN HIM.THE KING OF KINGS SALVATION BRINGS,LET LOVING HEARTS ENTHRONE HIM.RAISE, RAISE A SONG ON HIGH,THE VIRGIN SINGS HER LULLABYJOY, JOY FOR CHRIST IS BORN,THE BABE, THE SON OF MARY.

John William Trotter Here we come a-wassailing

(Choirs alone)Here we come a-wassailingAmong the leaves so green; Here we come a-wand’ringSo fair to be seen. Love and joy come to you, And to you your wassail too; And God bless you and send you a Happy New Year And God send you a Happy New Year.

Good master and good mistress,As you sit beside the fire,Pray think of us poor childrenWho wander in the mire. Love and joy come to you, And to you your wassail too; And God bless you and send you a Happy New Year And God send you a Happy New Year.

God bless the master of this houseLikewise the mistress too,And all the little childrenThat round the table go. Love and joy come to you, And to you your wassail too; And God bless you and send you a Happy New Year And God send you a Happy New Year.

John William Trotter Get down to Bethlehem

(Choirs alone) Get down to Bethlehem, a-Lord, Mary’s little baby is born!

Shepherds say they saw angels shining bright.Spoke right to them in the dead of night! Why don’t you pick up your feet and get off the ground?‘Cause I’m gonna tell you where this baby can be found!

Don’t go to the palace where the rooms are fine,He’s not in a house like a-yours and mine.Don’t look in high places or a warm soft bed,This one’s a-born in a cattle shed.

Three old men came a-passin’ through,Nobody believed what they said was true. Now I hear that King Herod’s gettin’ mighty scared; I don’t blame him for feeling slightly unprepared!

Oh, big men are talkin’ ‘bout us like we’re fools,They know the score, and they make the rules.I heard one sayin’ that we’re gonna seeThat nothin’ good can come out of Galilee!

David Willcocks O come all ye faithful

(With audience)

(With audience) O COME, ALL YE FAITHFUL,JOYFUL AND TRIUMPHANT,O COME YE, O COME YE TO BETHLEHEM;COME AND BEHOLD HIM,BORN THE KING OF ANGELS; O COME, LET US ADORE HIM, O COME, LET US ADORE HIM, O COME, LET US ADORE HIM,

CHRIST THE LORD.

Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninov’s music for the OrthodoxAll-Night Vigil - often known in the West as the Vespers - isknown as his finest unaccompanied choral work, one of thelandmarks of the entire choral repertoire. The Vancouver ChamberChoir combines with the Vancouver Cantata Singers to create asuitable Slavic sonority. As a companion piece, the Pacifica Singersjoin us for a 21st-century masterpiece and Vancouver ChamberChoir favourite – Morten Lauridsen’s Lux aeterna for choirs andorchestra, an intimate work of quiet serenity centred around auniversal symbol of hope, reassurance and goodness. And as alittle bonus, Gabriel Fauré’s exquisite Messe basse in JonWashburn’s orchestral version, featuring the vibrant young singersof the Vancouver Youth Choir.
