Course Requirements for Graduation

Most courses are worth 1 creditA few courses are worth .5 credit (see the course

catalog posted on PlanetHS & the MHS webpage)

Students have the ability to earn 32 credits in 4 years.

28 credits are required for graduation.

10th Grade Schedule Information

Block ScheduleSchedule

– Students in Band and Orchestra…will be on an A or B day for the entire year.

– Driver’s Education is a .5 class but takes an entire block for one entire term.

All PE courses are a .5 credit and are 9 week classes. Students who wish to take a PE class for the entire term (18 weeks) should sign up for two.

Reading and Finance will be required of all 10th grade students. Each class is worth .5 credit for 9 weeks.

Sophomores taking 2 AP Courses and may opt out of the reading. Students must submit the Application for Exemption.

Students in the sophomore year have the opportunity to take the following AP classes

Graduating with Distinction

Students will be recognized as graduating with “distinction” by attaining a B (3.0) average and completing at least one of the following….

Graduating with Distinction

Earn a nationally recognized industry certification Participate in at least one of the Governor’s Schools Participate in at least one of the state’s All State musical

organizations Be selected as a National Merit Finalist or Semi-Finalist Attain a score of 31 or higher composite score on the

ACT Attain a score of 3 or higher on at least two advanced

placement exams Earn 12 or more semester hours of transcripted

postsecondary credit.

Students who score at or above all of the subject are readiness benchmarks on the ACT will graduate with Honors.

National Honor Society and Maryville Scholars

The National Honor Society is a service and honor organization for juniors and seniors

The purpose of the Maryville Scholars Program is to promote academic excellence by recognizing the top students in grades 11 and 12.

Must have at least one complete term of grades from MHS

Must take Honors or AP English in grades 9-12

Must take at least 3 bonus point courses in grade 10

Must take at least 4 bonus point courses per year in grades 11 and 12 representing at least 3 of the core academic areas of English, math, science, social studies, and foreign language.

Must have no semester grade below CMay not have any out of school

suspensions.

February 13: Evening meeting for parents of current 9th grade students.

February 25-28: Online registration in Tech Labs.

March 24: Course request verification will be mailed home.

April 1: Counselors available to meet regarding scheduling questions.
