What Buildings Will Be Affected?

• New construction for permits issued on or after April 1, 2016 for:

– All new single family dwellings

– All residential dwellings up to 600 sqm (6,458 sqft) of total floor area

– New buildings that contain a combination of residential, commercial and/or low hazard industrial occupancies, with a total combined floor area of less than 300 sqm (3,229 sqft)

Buildings that are exempt

• Existing buildings

• Renovations and additions (large additions will be looked at on a case by case basis)

• Farm buildings

• Temporary buildings

• Buildings that are not required to be conditioned – attached and detached garages, storage sheds,

seasonal buildings

Options

• Three options available to builders

• 1) Prescriptive – which we will be discussing today (9.36.2 - 9.36.4)

• 2) Performance path (9.36.5 model housing)

• 3) Manitoba Energy Code for Buildings – architect or engineer to do a complete model on all aspects of the building

Manitoba Zones

Manitoba is broken in to 3 zones - 7A in the south includes Winnipeg, Brandon, Portage, Dauphin - 7B is central and includes Flin Flon, Swan River, The Pas - 8 is for the northern Manitoba and includes Lynn Lake, Thompson, Churchill - RTM builders will need to determine the zone the building is going to, to ensure proper insulation value

Effective R Values for Zone 7A

• MBC is written in RSI values - to convert to R multiply by 5.678 (R to RSI divide R by 5.678)

• Walls both above and below grade – R-15.9 (includes rim joist)

• Skylights shafts are to comply with wall requirements (R15.9)

• Ceilings - R-48.3 • Flat or cathedral ceilings – R-28.5 • Floors over unconditioned spaces – R-28.5 (cab-

overs, cantilevered floors, crawlspaces) 7 Portage Planning District

Effective R Values Cont.

• Slabs on grade – R-16.1 below slab, vertically around perimeter and out from perimeter a minimum of 24”

• Heated floors in conditioned spaces – R-16.1

• Unheated floors above original frost line – R-11.1 for 48” in from wall (original frost line is 4’-6” below original grade)

• Unheated floors below frost line – can be uninsulated

R-Values

• MB amendments has 2 tables that, if used, no calculations are required and must be followed to comply with the energy requirements

• CWC has numerous tables that can be followed and also has a calculator

• Owens Corning also has effective thermal resistance calculator

R-Value

• When a building envelope is protected by an enclosed unconditioned space like a sunroom, enclosed veranda or attached garage the effective R-value can be reduced by .9 (This does not apply to vented spaces like an attic or crawlspace)

• Continuity of insulation to be maintained. ei:steel beams that extend to perimeter required to be insulated inward 4x the beam thickness

R-Value

• Recessed mechanical, plumbing and electrical components in an insulated wall are required to maintain the proper R-value. IE: wall insert heaters, electrical panels, venting for range hoods, plumbing stacks

• Mechanical ducts, plumbing or electrical in an insulated floor or ceiling assembly required to maintain a minimum of R 15.78

Airtightness

• Air barriers to be continuous on complete house

• All penetration through air/vapour barrier to be sealed (all penetrations through top plates, top of ICF forms to basement interior air barrier, etc.)

• A blower door test can be asked for if the air tightness cannot be confirmed visually

Windows & Doors

• Portage is in Energy Star’s Rating Zone 2

• All windows and doors to be labelled and show either a U-value or an Energy Rating

• U-Value cannot be greater than 1.6

• Energy Rating cannot be less than 25

• Skylights can have a maximum U-Value of 2.7

• Attic hatches to be not less than R-14.75

• All ducts carrying conditioned air shall be sealed

• Thermostats to kick in when called for - not more than + or - .5 degrees C (1F)

• Gas fireplace to be direct vented and pilot on demand – no standing pilot light
