Exercise Class For Those With ArthritisAccording to the Centers for

Disease Control, physical exer-cise is critical for those living with arthritis. Regular exercise has been proven to help those with arthritis reduce pain and improve mobility, mood and quality of life.

This fall, Ryan Stoddard, PT, DPT, is leading a gentle, thera-peutic exercise program designed for arthritis patients to increase their flexibility and muscle strength. The six-week program meets on Tuesdays from 12:30-1:30 pm, beginning October 6, at the Emerson Wellness Center for Mind and Body, located at 310

Baker Avenue in Concord. The cost is $90 per person and spaces are limited. Free parking is avail-able in the office park.

Ryan is a physical thera-pist with Emerson’s Center for Rehabilitative and Sports Therapies. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy. His undergrad-uate degree from the same insti-tution is in Exercise Physiology. He achieved a specialty board certification in Orthopedics through the American Physical Therapy Association and earned his strength and conditioning specialty certification through the National Strength and

Conditioning Association. His treatment style incorporates the best evidence-based medicine with manual therapy and correc-tive exercises.

A student who took an exer-cise class recently with Ryan wrote, “I had an acute pain issue with my arthritic knee that was preventing me from doing my usual exercise. Ryan’s class kept me moving at a time when I did not know how to proceed. The class was fun, and Ryan is sup-portive to people at every level of ability.”

academic challenges. Some of our kids are struggling to manage these challenges due to biologi-cal, psychological and/or social issues. The symptoms of these underlying issues may include school avoidance, isolation, poor grades, self-harm, problems with relationships, impulsivity, poor decision-making, defiance, eating disorders and substance abuse.

NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is offering an educational program - “NAMI Basics”, specially designed for parents and other caregivers of adolescents and children living with emotional or behavioral challenges. The course is taught by trained volunteer teachers who themselves are parents/caregivers of children living with emotional difficulties. This structure creates an intimacy that few programs possess and con-sequently, a program now whose capacities are unparalleled. It is an evidenced based program and recognized across the country.

The “Basics” program runs for seven weekly consecutive classes each lasting 2 ½ hours. There is no cost to participants for the course and all materi-

Workshops in problem solv-ing, listening and communica-tion skills are highlighted. “Nothin’ But A House Party”

On October 24, 2015 with the support of over 30 spon-sors, Littleton Youth Football & Cheer is producing a con-cert “Notin’ but a House party” to benefit its membership. The LYTFC program has built a tremendous reputation and has earned the ranking of a nation-ally competitive league. As LYTFC has grown in its suc-cess, sending multiple football players and cheer teams to com-pete at the AYF/AYC National Competitions. The Cheer teams placed top in the country.

Memories of the 80’s & 90’s will fill the air and friends will

hit the dance floor when The Fool’s (http://www.thefools-band.com) , Eddy’s Shoe (http://eddysshoe.com/) and Danny Klein’s Full House Band (http://www.dannyklein.com) take the stage on October 24 at 5:00 PM at the Boxborough Holiday Inn (Boxborough, MA).

The event, “Nothin’ but a House Party” (http://www.notinbutahouseparty.com) will feature all three bands playing to a crowd that is expected to reach 1,000. The featured bands are both locally and nationally recognized artists for perform-ing favorites and renowned for their covers. And will be playing music from artists such as The

Fools, J. Geils, Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Frank Zappa among other artists from the 70’s, 80s and 90s.

Both The Fools and Danny Klein have long standing careers in the music industry and have earned their spot as major nation-al performers. Both have roots and got their start in here in the Boston area.

Early Fall Color Could Be Sign Of Tree

America, people will soon enjoy one of nature’s finest shows - fall foliage. Color-changing leaves make for a beautiful display, but early changes in leaf-color can be a sign that your tree is stressed and vulnerable to insect and disease attack.

If the leaves on your trees are changing color sooner than

similar trees in the area, consult a professional arborist, who can identify any problems and offer possible solutions.

“Premature color change can be an indication that a tree isn’t vigorous enough to withstand insects and disease organisms that may attack it, not to men-tion the usual changes that occur when the weather turns cold,” says Tchukki Andersen, BCMA, CTSP* and staff arbor-ist with the Tree Care Industry Association. “Occasionally, only one or two limbs of the tree will show premature fall color. This could be a sign of a disease at work, though only the infected limbs are weakened.”

The more common situation is for the entire tree to exhibit premature fall coloration, a phe-nomenon usually linked to root-related stress. “Trees respond to these stresses by trying to cur-tail their above-ground growth,” adds Andersen.

Leaves can be thought of as small factories containing raw materials, products and by-prod-ucts, all in chemical form and some with color. As the leaf is “abandoned” by the tree, the green chlorophyll - the dominant

Supply lines to the leaves also become clogged, affecting which chemicals are left in the leaf: If the major chemical remaining in the aban-doned leaf is red, the leaf turns red; if it’s yellow, the leaf turns yellow, and so on.

“The yearly variation in color intensity is due to fluctuating weather conditions, which can affect the balance of chemicals and their composition in the leaves,” Andersen says.

Differing amounts of rainfall, sunlight, temperature, humidity and other factors may have an effect on how bright and how long the “leaf-peeping” season will be in any given year.

Donate Blood With The Red Cross

During Liver Awareness Month this October, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood and platelets to support liver trans-plant patients and others needing blood products.

Liver transplants are the sec-ond most common type of trans-plant with more than 6,000 per-formed in the U.S. each year, according to the American Liver Foundation. Liver transplant patients may require in excess of 30 pints of blood during surgery.

For blood donor Amy Slattery, the need for blood hits close to home. Her mother received a liver transplant and needed more than 70 blood products during the surgery.

“I donate to help others that needed blood like her,” said Slattery. “I donate in thanks to those who donate their blood products to help save lives.”

Volunteer donors like Slattery are the only source of blood for those in need of transfusions dur-ing transplants and other surger-ies. Donors with all blood types are needed, and especially those with types O negative, A nega-tive, B negative and AB blood.

Spellman Museum Celebrates

Smithsonian DayOn Saturday, September 26

from noon to 5:00 the Spellman Museum of Stamps & Postal History on the Regis College campus in Weston will partici-pate in the annual Museum Day presented by Smithsonian maga-zine. Now in it is eleventh year, it is a celebration of culture, learning and the dissemination of knowledge. It reflects the spirit of the magazine and emu-lates the free-admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, DC-based prop-erties. The Spellman doors

will be open free of charge to Smithsonian magazine readers and Smithsonian.com visitors at museums and cultural institu-tions nationwide.

Last year over 400,000 peo-ple attended Museum Day, with all 50 states plus Puerto Rico represented by over 900 par-ticipating museums, including 84 Smithsonian affiliate museums. This year, the magazine expects to involve over 1,000 museums.

Spellman Museum Education Director, Henry Lukas, says he is pleased that the Spellman is again participating this year. He indicated that the day “is a great way to bring new people to see the Museum’s various exhibits

and learn all it has to offer to the community.” Lukas believes that “You don’t have to be a stamp collector to enjoy the Museum’s displays.”

Current exhibits include “Mail Goes to War,” “Old Glory on Stamp” “Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month” “Stamps and the Comics, “The Steinway Music Collection,” “A History of the Boston Post Road,” and “The Development of Rural Free Delivery.”

Also at the Museum that day is a stamp auction starting at 11:30.

What Should Violence Prevention Look Like In Our Communities?

In December 2014, a forum convened by the Sudbury Wayland Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable was held at Wayland High School with Malcolm Astley of the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund and Jessica Teperow of REACH Beyond Domestic Violence facilitating the conversation. Almost 100 participants from

Sudbury, Wayland, Lincoln and surrounding towns (including educators, psychologists, coun-selors, selectmen, state legis-lators, police officers and stu-dents) discussed actions toward preventing violence in ourselves, our relationships, homes, neigh-borhoods and towns.

The participants identified a long list of strategies for prevent-ing violence in our communities with a particular focus on the following priority action steps:

• Begin communicating with very young children about healthy, respectful and effective relationships and recognizing and responding to at risk situa-tions and conflict effectively.

• Set up safe places for our young people for regular dia-logue about real concerns, wor-ries and challenges.

• Reward nonviolent behavior and standing up for others, and provide training for standing up for others in safe ways.

• Within the violence pre-vention domain, build concepts and vocabulary equivalent to “Designated Driver” and “Friends Don’t let Friends Drive Drunk” (such as “Designated Caretaker,” “Up Stander,” “Friends Don’t Let Friends Go Alone to Breakups”).

• Provide Mentors in Violence Prevention training

• Support coaches in educating for and emphasizing account-ability

• Define healthy relationships.• Provide support systems

around breakups.• Support peers communicat-

Roundtable intends to continue this conversation at our monthly meetings and also host several community programs featuring experts in violence understand-ing and prevention and com-munity engagement. We hope that family, friends, neighbors and professionals will join us for these conversations and pro-grams as we explore ideas and actions that can help us under-stand and prevent violence in our communities.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Mark your calendar for October 13 at 7pm for a pro-gram to be held at the Goodnow Library in Sudbury, where Joel M. Ristuccia and Stephanie Howard will be the panelists for a discussion entitled “Continuing the Conversation: Helping Children and Youth Learn to Cope with Common Childhood Challenges.” These challenges typically include experiences of sudden change, loss, failure, shame and rejection which can have traumatic impact on young people.

Helping kids learn to cope with these “normal” traumatic experiences can build deep self-confidence and resilience and prevent future extreme pain and harm.

Advances In Concussion Care

Dr. Robert C. Cantu, renowned neurosurgeon and national expert on concussions, and Chris Iby, physical therapist with the Dr. Robert C. Cantu Concussion Center, Emerson Hospital, will talk with parents, coaches, ath-letic trainers and school nurses about advances in concussion treatment and injury prevention.

With recent media attention and new studies out about the impact of concussions on the physical, mental and academic performance of student athletes,

this free session is an important opportunity to learn about new protocols and advances in con-cussions, and how early diag-nosis and treatment can speed recovery and risks from multiple head injuries.

Participants will hear from Dr. Robert C. Cantu and Chris Iby about concussions, treatment, and recovery. Demonstrations of the latest concussion therapy machines will be available.

The session is open to the pub-lic and is designed for parents, coaches and those involved with the health of student athletes. Athletes are welcome to attend. Light snacks will be available.

This year’s sale promises to be better than ever with many high quality pieces such as wooden

tables, chairs, pewter, glassware and floral vases, antique and mod-ern children’s items. For example, we’ll have for sale an America Flyer Train set with accessories and assorted collectibles, includ-ing beautiful dolls and doll sets. We anticipate receiving more before the sale. All items will be priced to sell. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted.

Now is the time to check your attics and basements for items to donate. Interesting, unusual and/or collectible items are preferred but any saleable items in good condition will be accepted and are tax deductible as the Society is a 501c(3) organization. Great Food, Great Music—And Robots!It’s a party for adults but it may

bring out the kid in you. This year the Goodnow Library Foundation is putting more fun into fundrais-

ing with a “Tinker Time” cocktail party, showcasing high-tech dem-onstrations and gadgets.

The annual crowd-pleaser will be held Saturday, October 24, from 6:30 to 9 pm at the library. Tickets are $75 per person. There will be hearty hors d’oeuvres and food stations (with cassoulet in demitasse cups, or Buffalo Mac ‘n’ Cheese), plus a cash bar.

Guests can see miniature air-planes soar in the library atrium, courtesy of the Charles River Radio Controllers. A Double Telepresence Robot will greet guests as they enter the event. Inside will be demonstrations of advanced 3D printing and also creations made from electronic

circuits, including the library’s “banana piano.”

Starring in the show: one or two humanoid NAO robots from the French robotics company Aldebaran. These toddler-size robots can speak 19 languages, practice tai-ci, play tic-tac-toe, and dance to any kind of music (including Gangnam style).

Following tradition, “Tinker Time” guests can take a chance on an array of raffle baskets. Choices include The American Girl Doll of the Year, an Oleana Night Out, a Fitbit Basket, Wine Basket, Golf Basket and a Disney “Frozen”-theme Basket.

The Goodnow Library Foundation is a nonprofit that raises money for capital improve-ments and endowment at Goodnow. Past projects include renovation of the Children’s Room, creation of the Community Gathering Space, and the com-plete upgrade of all public access computers at the library.

Grilled Greek Salad Pita with Beef BrisketMakes: 8 stuffed pitasPrep time: 15 minutesCook time: 6 minutesGreek Dressing: 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 1/2 tablespoons Kalamata olives, minced 4 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 4 pita bread rounds, cut in half forming 8 pockets 1 cucumber, cut into 1/2-inch slices 1 tomato 1/2 red onion, cut into 1/2-inch slices 2 cups romaine lettuce, cut into 1-inch pieces 1/4 cup feta cheese 1 pound leftover beef brisketIn small bowl combine all Greek dressing ingredients. Set aside.

Build charcoal re for direct grilling. Place pita bread directly over hot coals (approximately 450°F) and cook for 1 minute on each side or until grill marks are visible. Place cucumbers, whole tomato and onion directly over hot coals (approximately 450°F) and cook, turning once, for 4 minutes or until they brown and start to soften.

Remove vegetables from grill and dice. Place vegetables into medium bowl and stir in dressing. Let mixture stand for 5 minutes before adding romaine lettuce and feta cheese.

Fill each pita pocket with leftover beef brisket and grilled Greek salad.

Barbecue Beef BrisketMakes: 8-10 servingsPrep time: 30 minutesCook time: 5-6 hours 1 beef brisket at (5-6 pounds) 1 tablespoon beef bouillon base Dry Rub 1 cup beef brothDry Rub: 1/2 tablespoon salt 1/2 tablespoon paprika 1/2 tablespoon black pepper 1/2 tablespoon sugar 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon onion powder 1/4 teaspoon oregano 1/8 teaspoon ground corianderBuild a charcoal re with Kingsford charcoal for indirect cooking by situ-ating coals on only one side of grill, leaving other side void.

Cover entire brisket with beef bouillon base. In small bowl, mix dry rub ingredients and coat brisket with rub. When cooker reaches 225°F, place brisket on void side of grill and close lid. Cook for 4 hours, until internal temperature reaches 160-170°F.

Remove brisket from grill and place in shallow baking dish or disposable aluminum pan. Pour beef broth over brisket and cover pan with aluminum foil. Place baking dish in cooker for an additional 1-2 hours, until internal temperature reaches 185°F.

Remove baking dish from grill and let meat rest undisturbed for 20-30 minutes. Slice brisket across grain and serve.


The Friends Of The Goodnow Library Celebrate Membership Month

October is the Friends of the Goodnow Library Membership Month, and everyone who renews a membership or joins the Friends during the months of September and October will be entered into a free drawing to win a Kindle Paperwhite. Do you know that the Friends of the Goodnow Library annually supplement the budget voted by the town to make possible the many programs and resources that are not included in the town budget? In 2014, the Friends donated more than $75,000 to the Goodnow Library to pay for all adult, teen and special children’s programs, all the museum passes, the Summer Reading Program, the new book drop, teen study week, all the furnishings in the Community Gathering Space and to support collections, fund the movie license and much more.

To continue these contributions, the Friends need community sup-port. The cost of a family membership in the Friends is less than the cost of a night out at the movies for a family of four, and it is tax deductible.

Due to increased demands for programs and services, the Friends

also need more volunteers. The Friends have many volunteer oppor-tunities that can be matched to your interests, your talents and your available time.

Wadsworth CemeteryJoin the Sudbury Historical

Society on Saturday, October 3 at 1:00 p.m. at Wadsworth Cemetery (74 Concord Road) for a walking tour through one of Sudbury’s treasured places. Hear how this historic cemetery evolved and is maintained, listen to the stories of those buried here, and learn about memorial art, burial cus-toms and symbols, and cemetery architecture. Also featured will be the Wadsworth Monument which appears on Sudbury’s town seal and the recently restored WWII, Korean, and Vietnam War

Monuments.The walk will begin with

an overview of the tour at the Summer House, located behind the Wadsworth Monument. Guides will then lead you to the monument that was dedicated in 1852 to the soldiers who were casualties of the King Philip War in 1676 and then on to the graves of Sudbury’s notable citizens located in the earliest sections of the cemetery. History is rich here; the stories compelling. Be sure to mark your calendars. You will walk away with a new-found appreciation for Sudbury’s past.

HOPEsudbury Seeking Auction Donations

HOPEsudbury is inviting Sudbury citizens and business-es to participate in the annual HOPEsudbury Telethon and Auction by donating auction items. Last year over 200 donors provided restaurant, food and beverage gift certificates, sports team and theater tickets, theme baskets, handbags, jewelry, fash-ion accessories, home furnish-ings, art, classes and lessons, and more.

Auction donors and their items will be included in the HOPEsudbury Telethon Auction Guide, distributed to more than 3,000 families in Sudbury, fea-tured in the online auction and

highlighted throughout the 10-hour Live Telethon.

Items will be up for bid in the online auction, which will take place Saturday November 7th during the HOPEsudbury Telethon.

Laura Wagner, Executive Director, Unitarian Universalist Mass Action Network, has been a Unitarian Universalist for over 20 years, has held many lay leader positions but her primary focus has always been social justice. She began her involvement with UU Mass Action as a volunteer working on the immigrant rights campaign. Laura was initially drawn to immigrant justice work because of her family history. Her grandparents were survi-vors of the Armenian Genocide. Her commitment to immigrant rights deepened following a trag-ic death in her home town of Marlborough.

This Sunday the congregation will Share the Plate with UU Mass Action.

In addition, after the service, the congregation will begin its monthly letter-writing sessions to legislators. This week the writ-ing will focus on encouraging legislators to support two bills to end the effects of Citizens United. Anyone who wishes to support this initiative is welcome to write letters.

Religious Exploration, led by our new director Chris Scheller, for children and teens takes place concurrently with the adult wor-ship service. Children and teens begin in the worship service, and then go off to their own fun and interesting program of religious exploration.

This Sunday at First Parish Sudbury children aged 6-months to 4 are invited to play in our nursery, children 4-6 are invited to our Spirit Play class, where we will be introducing our seven rainbow principles through story-telling, creative play, and arts and crafts. Older children still in grade school are invited to join our Sing to the Power class, where we will be exploring how we can cre-

ate positive change in the world through the power of connection. 7th and 8th graders are invited to join the Breakfast Club. The high school youth group will meet at noon, after social hour.

Sudbury Valley Trustees Annual

Meeting At its 62nd Annual Meeting,

Sudbury Valley Trustees will honor several local conserva-tionists for their significant con-tributions to the protection of open spaces and wildlife habitats in this region. The meeting will begin at 6:45 pm on Thursday, October 1, at SVT’s Wolbach Farm headquarters, 18 Wolbach Road, Sudbury. Business spon-sors of the meeting include Capital Group Properties and Middlesex Savings Bank.

SVT’s annual awards pro-gram recognizes volunteer efforts in support of SVT’s work as well as a broad dedication to conservation throughout the region surrounding the Sudbury, Assabet, and Concord Rivers. Bill Fadden of Framingham will receive the Lewis Conservation Award for his contribution to conservation efforts throughout eastern Massachusetts. Fadden, an Associate Member of the Framingham Conservation Commission, actively vol-unteers his time to build and maintain trails and monitor

properties for numerous conser-vation organizations, including SVT, the Bay Circuit Alliance, and the Appalachian Mountain Club.

The Distinguished Public Service award is being pre-sented to Kathy Joubert, Town Planner for Northborough, for her tireless commitment to mak-ing a positive impact on the environment through her work. Joubert has been an invaluable resource to SVT and its part-ners in the Tri-Town Landscape Protection project as they work to protect over 500 acres of land in Berlin, Boylston, and Northborough.

David Sette-Ducati of Sudbury has been named recipi-ent of the Morgan Volunteer Award, which recognizes an SVT volunteer who has given freely of his or her time and talents. Sette-Ducati has spent countless hours supporting the SVT staff to ensure the organi-zation has the financial founda-tion to fulfill its land conser-vation and wildlife protection mission.

The Steward of the Land award will be given to Larry Todd of Framingham, an SVT member who has been a model

land steward. Each month, regardless of the weather con-ditions, Todd spends many hours on SVT properties, where he maps and marks property boundaries and monitors and maintains trails.

Finally, Boy Scout Troop 100 of Westborough will receive the Youth Steward Award, which recognizes exceptional ser-vice by an individual youth or a youth group in support of SVT’s conservation efforts. For the past 10 years, Troop 100 has maintained the Walkup and Robinson Memorial Reservation in Westborough, where scouts have managed invasive plant species, maintained trails, and cleared downed limbs following major storms.

During the business portion of the meeting, SVT Executive Director Lisa Vernegaard will highlight the organization’s successes during the past year and will discuss other conserva-tion efforts now underway. The guest speaker at the meeting will be Andy Finton, Director of Science and Conservation, The Nature Conservancy, who will discuss, “Defining Success, What’s next for Conservation in Massachusetts.” The public is

invited to attend. Refreshments will be served from 6:45 until 7:30, when the business meet-ing and award presentation will commence.
