Jobcentre plus are working in partnership with Princes Trust and Marks & Spencer to provide Jobcentre Plus claimants with a Retail training opportunity and work experience that will lead to a guaranteed job interview. Following this opportunity last year, 50% of participants went on to gain employment in retail.
Customers must be aged 18 – 25 and have a genuine interest in a retail career.

Bailey Court Group Sessions The jobs market is very competitive at the moment and you will find that employers will only consider good quality applications. The jobcentre has introduced a variety of sessions providing advice and guidance on everything you need to increase your chances of finding work. Conditionality and Overview The session starts with an” ice-breaker” to let attendees get to know each other and talk about their job goals. We then go over the purpose of the Claimant Commitment and how you can ensure you meet the conditions outlined. We cover such topics as; internet sites, online centres, recruitment agencies, work experience, sector based work academies and voluntary work. We will then explain the content of all the group sessions available and how they can improve your chances of getting into work. The sessions are designed to give you the opportunity to discuss any barriers to work and get help not just from jobcentre staff but useful hints and tips from other attendees. CV Support Claimants attending this session should already have a CV. The session outlines the expectations of employers in terms of both the layout and the content of your CV. We discuss how to ensure you grab the employer’s attention and stand-out from all the other applicants. We also look at tailoring your CV not only to the job description but also to the environment you will be working in. Guidance is given on both covering and speculative letters. Application Forms From previous recruitment we found a large number of applications from jobseekers were rejected by employers due to their poor quality. In this session we use an application form from a well-known employer and talk you through it giving guidance on each section. This includes dealing with such areas as gaps in employment, common mistakes and answering competency questions. Interview Techniques This group session is run by staff from the National Careers Service. As this organisation has established close links with employers in the city, they are best placed to conduct these sessions. Nowadays employers use a variety of interviews to find the best candidate and it can be nerve-wracking to find yourself in an unfamiliar situation. You will be given guidance on different types of interviews and on coping mechanisms to enable you to perform well. Work Club These sessions will be run on a 1 to 1 basis. Each slot will run for 30mins and the claimant can receive help with any job searching related query. E.G we will help customers to register on to UJ, indeed and any other job site. We can look at your CV and help you to prepare for interviews and any other relevant queries.

Traineeships is a non mandatory BIS and DofE led initiative, which focuses on young people aged 16-24 years old, living in England and who are interested in work, but need extra help to get and sustain an Apprenticeship or other job. Traineeships are study based programmes combined with work placements, which give young people the opportunity to develop workplace skills and experience; putting them in a better position to compete for future vacancies/opportunities. Traineeship opportunities can last from 6 weeks and up to 6 months, are flexible in nature and designed to:
Improve job prospects Improve literacy and numeracy, where appropriate Provide the opportunity to observe the workplace skills and behaviours employers
want/expect Show how existing skills can be adapted to the workplace Offer real life work experience Build confidence and overcome problems which can interfere with successful
learning Strengthen the CV, to include a work related reference/referee; and Give employers the opportunity to observe trainees at work.
Traineeships contain 3 core elements:
Employability training English & Maths up to GCSE or equivalent Level 2, where the claimant does not
already hold a A*-C level GCSE or equivalent (Where the claimant has the required level of English & Maths qualifications, this element of training is not required); and
Work Experience Placement up to 240 hours maximum (this can be extended if an Apprenticeship is accepted) over the duration of the traineeship.
Benefit claimants should be in receipt of:
o Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) or o Universal Credit (UC) or o Employment Support Allowance (WRAG) or o Income Support (IS).
Traineeship participants:
must be aged 16-24 years old on the first day of the course, including claimants up to 24 years and 364 days old;
must be living in England from August 2013; can have qualifications up to and including a full Level 2 (equivalent to 5 GCSEs,
level A-C) for 19-24 year olds, or below a full level 3 (A Level) for 16-18 year olds; must have little or no work history, and: be close to the labour market.
