80/20a solo exhibition by Michelle Kuen Suet Fung

Hong Kong artist, Michelle Kuen Suet Fung’s latest works

in her solo exhibition at Art Projects Gallery, titled “80/20”,

calls for attention to the plight of wildlife affected by the

ecological damage caused by humans, with particular

scrutiny to the impact of human plastic consumption on

marine life.

Michelle Fung’s works in the “80/20” series portray an ironi-

cally celebratory atmosphere that belie the solemnity of the

underlying environmental issue, as a way to evoke deeper

contemplation by the viewers who upon closer inspection,

would realize that the colorful, confetti-like festive elements

were in fact plastic debris and other harmful materials that

are plaguing animal life.

Rendered in mixed media of ink, pigment, graphite and

color pencil, Michelle Fung’s highly detailed works can be

seen as a visually stunning ecological rally through art, to

call upon viewers to reflect on the human impact on the

natural world and increase the awareness of the environ-

mental issue.

the beauty of the images to appreciate this is art with real

meaning.

Take for example the major work in this exhibition, “New

Jersey, U.S.A., 1985’ which depicts the death of a baby

sperm whale. Elegantly drawn with a colour palette that

perfectly compliments the composition yet it is an inherently

political statement. Her work is deeply committed to

arousing the viewers’ awareness of the imbalance between

man and the natural world. Look around our own Hong Kong

shoreline and you can see for yourself the garbage washed

in on very tide. It is the same lack of concern that is leading

to the decimation of the elephant and tiger populations for

the sake of human satisfaction.

The materials are interesting with the use of translucent rice

paper inviting the individual to make their own interpretation

of the work. With her international background she has been

able to draw on a variety of influences and techniques to

meld them into a style that is uniquely Michelle’s and quite

unlike anything else in Hong Kong.

Norman de Brackinghe

I first met Michelle Kuen in 2006 when she had an exhibition

of photographs at the Hong Kong Fringe Club. It was not

until later that I discovered her real ambition was to be a full

time artist.

Michelle has always been able to draw and since her return

from Canada that ability has developed into a powerful

creative force. Her draughtsmanship is superb and those

fine but purposeful lines draw one into the images.

She has gradually moved away from the innocence of her

early work helped in part by her 2013 residency in Iceland.

This resulted in a series of images linking animals to food

that stretched her imagination to the limit and lifted her

work to a different level. 80/20 takes her one step further in

reaching her goal of artistic maturity.

When intellectual and creative developments go hand in

hand it means an extra level is added to the art. Michelle

demonstrates this in full measure with this series of works.

The discipline of line on paper and the passion for the need

to create bring the emotional content to the fore. They are

lovely to look at, but look closely and you will see beyond

NewJersey, USA,

80% of all marine waste is from the land. Only 20% is from the ocean. 80% of marine waste is plastic. 80% of the Great Pacific Gyre is plastic, and the Gyre weighs a total of 3.5 million tons. 80% of people will do nothing about it. Are you in the 20%?

Artist’s Statement

This body of works is a marriage between two love affairs

in the my life—my passion for animals and my obsession to

reduce the use of plastic. It all began when I started carrying

canvas shopping bags with me everywhere, bringing my

Pyrex container to buy takeaway food, and drinking water

only from my own water bottle on the go. When the ritual

took me beyond the boundaries of a personal life, my

research began to reveal the price of convenience, which

has now become common knowledge.

Much of the plastic debris depicted in the drawings are

household items we associate with pleasure and celebration,

including soda rings, condoms and balloons. These

drawings consist of multi-layered ink on rice paper, which

play a visual trick on the viewer. What do you see? What

do you want to see? In 5-10%, do you see a baby emperor

penguin shrieking at a large bundle of cheerful multi-colour

balloons? Or do you see the other monochromatic baby

emperor penguin under the balloons, strangled to death by

curling ribbons?

Hopefully through my works, they will elicit the viewer to

learn more about the price of our plastic consumption. For

instance, in the work Tōhoku, Japan, 2011 confronts the

viewer with a puzzle. Why are Japanese items depicted

with Sockeye Salmon and Rainbow Trout, fish native to the

North Pacific Ocean? The title is the first hint. The viewer

further solves the mystery when he or she reads about how

Japanese garbage traveled across the Pacific Ocean after

the 2011 Tsunami.

Although I do not see myself as an animal right activist, I

hope to raise questions about the effects of human

behaviour towards animals through my works. Engineers

are problem-solvers; artists are question-raisers. I would

like to take the opportunity of this exhibition to translate my

private contemplation into collective contemplation in the

gallery space.

About the Artist Michelle Kuen Suet Fung

80/20a solo exhibition by Michelle Kuen Suet Fung

exhibition I Don’t Know if You Know How Much I Love You

(March 2012) was the first solo show at hi art store, a gallery

project of Beijing art tycoon Wu Jing. In November 2012,

she began to work with Michael Goedhuis Gallery (London,

U.K.) that has an international reputation of dealing Asian

art for over two decades. She was declared as a winner

of the Young Artist Competition organized by Asia Top

Gallery Hotel Art Fair 2012 and also received an Award of

Excellence in the Second Greater China Illustration Awards.

Her works have been featured in the media numerous times,

and are in international private collections, and The Canada

Council Art Bank.

Belonging to a generation of young western-trained Hong

Kong artist, Michelle returned to Hong Kong in 2011 to

pursue her art career after living almost two decades in

Vancouver, Canada. Owing to her multi-faceted background

and international outlook, she draws inspirations from a

wide range of sources and popular sub-cultures, including

fairy tales, children’s picture books, the Japanese Otaku,

fifteenth-century European etching, as well as traditional

Chinese painting. Animals and their relationships with

humans, explored from various intellectual and philosophical

angles whether emotional, sustenance, or environmental, is

a long recurring thread in her works.

In March 2010, she was awarded an artist residency at

Canada’s prestigious Banff Centre. In July 2013, she traveled

to Listhús Art Space, Iceland, for a month-long residency.

Her works have been exhibited in the United States, United

Kingdom, Canada, Hong Kong, Korea and China. Her
