ANNIVERSARY THOUGHTS

We have been making plans over the summer for a great celebration of Cherry Hill Church’s 75th Anniversary on September 10, 2017. As the day comes closer, I have been reflecting on the words of hymn writer and composer, Jane Marshall:

Give thanks for the past, for those who had vision, Who planted and watered so dream could come true.

Born of a community’s need for its own house of worship and created through the tire-less efforts of local residents and interested denominational officials, this congregation

held its first service on Sunday afternoon, September 20, 1942 in the Lindbergh School. On March 7, 1943, the congregation was formerly organizes, as part of the United Presbyterian Church of North America. 73 charter members were received. During the fall of 1943, property for a church site was purchased on Cherry Hill Road, one block west of Telegraph. The dreams of those first members certainly came to fruition in the intervening years as the ministry and mission of Cherry Hill expanded far beyond the corner of Cherry Hill and Telegraph.

Give thanks for the now, for study for worship, For mission that bids us turn prayer into deeds.

Cherry Hill’s membership is still comprised of dedicated saints who give of themselves in countless ways. To-gether, we work to make Cherry Hill a vital and viable presence in our community and beyond. Members give of their time in keeping the building in good repair. We reach out to help those beyond our walls by offering food, clothing, and other items. We work to provide meaningful and relevant worship experiences, as well as opportunities for service, music programs, etc.

Give thanks for tomorrow, full of surprises, For knowing whatever tomorrow may bring, the Word is our promise, always, forever ,

we rest in God’s keeping and live in God’s love.

This anniversary celebration reminds us that the great history and past of our congregation is not something we look back on and rest on, but rather something we build on. On Sunday, September 10, we will pause and celebrate. But, on Monday, September 11 the ministry of this church has to go on. We can’t stop. People will still come to our doors in need of food. Children will come into our classrooms waiting to be taught. The lonely will turn to us for companionship. We must continue to embark upon new frontiers of ministry together for any ministry that is faithful to Jesus Christ for apathy or complacency. We still have many dreams and goals that together we can discern, celebrate, and build upon.

In Alex Haley’s book, Roots, he tells about the little African village Juffure. At the conclusion of a funeral ser-vice held in Juffure, the oldest man in the village stands up to speak to all the young. He says, “This village belongs to three different groups of people. It belongs to you and me who strut around as if we owned it all. But then it also belongs to a second group – those who are gone. It is theirs as surely as it is ours. Even though they are no longer among us, their faith lives on.” And then a little child in the circle asks quietly, “But grandpa, who is the third group?” A big smile comes across the old man’s face and he says, “Ah, the third group are the people who are not yet born – the ones who will come after us. It belongs to them as well.”

I think the same could be said of our church. Yes, this church is certainly ours and it means a lot to us or else we wouldn’t still be here week after week knocking ourselves out to keep it going. And it certainly belongs to all those who have served here over the past 75 years, who, though they have died, still speak to us through their faith. And, perhaps most of all, the ministry of this church belongs to all those not yet born – those who will come after us. The church of tomorrow.

I hope that you will make every effort to join us on September 10 as we pause and remember and give thanks. However, most of all, I hope you will join us in the coming weeks, months, and years as together, “surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses we run with perseverance the race that is set before us looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecting of our faith.”

75th ANNIVERSARY CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN UPDATE

In February, Cherry Hill embarked upon a special capital campaign as part of our 75th anniversary observance. The campaign would raise money for improvements to our church building and property, in-cluding the installation of a digital sign at the corner of Cherry Hill & Telegraph Roads. WOMEN’S MINISTRY GET TOGETHER

Thursday, September 28

All the women of Cherry Hill are invited to come on Thursday, September 28th at 7:00 p.m. in Memorial Parlor to mix and mingle with the women of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. They joined us at our women’s retreat back in April and we had so much fun we are continuing our relationship, getting to-gether about every other month.

At our last gathering, on July 20th, we met in St. Paul’s Gathering Room to socialize, discuss our experiences on specific questions and enjoy a brief, casual worship including song. There were 10 women from CHPC who joined 7 from their church. Please put it on your calendar and come check us out! I will keep you posted on what will be the topic

for discussion. -Lisa LevangieLisa LevangieLisa LevangieLisa Levangie

CHERRY HILL MEMORIES from “Our Memories As We Celebrate 60 Years of the Chapel’s Dedication”

September 28, 2008

“In the early 1970s, the Dearborn area was having some problems with its electric service. They asked eve-ryone to cut back on their use of electric power. The light in the Cherry Hill Church steeple burned day and night. Rev. Bill Stryker and I decided that the light in the steeple should be turned off to show that we were following the request of the town’s administration. The first night after we turned the light out, I received a call at home from the airport authorities wanting to know what happened to our light. They were quite spe-cific in their request that the light be turned back on. They told me that our church was on a direct flight path to the airport’s runway, and that many of the pilots still flew and landed “by the seat of their pants”. Our stee-ple light was one of their main guides for night landings. It was just after midnight that I went back to the church and turned the light back on. I’m thankful that Cherry Hill Church continues to be a beacon of light in Dearborn and beyond!” – Dr. Frank C. Marvin, Jr., Pastor 1970-1988

MISSION PARTNER TO ARRIVE IN OCTOBER

As we reported in the summer issue of The Messenger, Cherry Hill is hosting a mission partner this fall as part of the Synod of the Covenant’s Mission to the USA Program.

Leonard “Leo” Chrysostomos will arrive at Cherry Hill on Friday, October 11 and will be with us for three weeks. Leo lives in Indonesia with his wife Mimi and their two daughters, Kezia and Katya. He is lecturer and researcher at the Indonesian Con-sortium for Religious Studies and is on the faculty at Duta Wacana Christian University. He is an elder in the Christian Church of Indonesia which is the fruit of Dutch Reformed mission-ary work.

While Leo is with us in Dearborn, he will preach on a Sun-day morning and Wednesday evening as well as at a congregational lunch or dinner yet to be planned. He will visit local colleges, industries, seminaries, and as well spend time with our members in small gatherings over lunch or dinner.

We want to be good hosts to Leo during his time with us. There are many ways that you can help! To begin with, we will need families or couples who might be willing to host Leo in their home for a week. All that hosts will need to provide is a place for Leo to sleep and relax and possibly breakfast in the morning . You will not be responsible for transportation or other meals. Please speak to Rev. Mark Phillips as soon as possible if you are willing to host Leo for a week or so.

Other ways you can help: • Invite Leo for lunch or dinner or a family event (birthday, Sunday dinner, etc.) • Take Leo to a local sporting event or concert or movie • Offer to take Leo to Greenfield Village or the Henry Ford or the DIA or any of our local

attractions. • Invite Leo to speak at your local service organization – Rotary, Kiwanis, etc. • Invite Leo to your church group or organization And the list goes on!

There will be a sign up sheet on the table in Weir Foyer to host Leo for dinner. If you would like to in-clude him in other events, please schedule that through Lisa Levangie in the church office. Please help us

FOOD PANTRY NEEDS

Remember the nursery rhyme about the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe? She had so many children she didn’t know

what to do. She gave them some broth without any bread. Then spanked them all soundly and sent them to bed.

Apparently she had never heard of the Helping Hand Food Pantry! However, lots of others have heard about the food pantry, and that’s a good thing. We want to reach more clients and our num-bers are increasing. But this has resulted in spend-ing more money and distributing more groceries. Now not only are the supplies getting low, but also our bank account.

On a recent Wednesday after serving 37 families , our shelves were looking quite bare, which re-minded me of another nursery rhyme- Old Mother Hubbard went to the cupboard to fetch her poor dog a bone, but when she got there, the cupboard was bare, and so the poor dog had none. Well we don’t want that to happen. So please remember the Food Pantry when you go grocery shopping and, on the first of the month when the pink envelope ap-pears in the front of your box of offering envelopes. Please help us to keep this very important mission going. And thank you very much for your past and continued support.

STAFF SEARCH UPDATE

Two search committees have been working over the summer to secure a new Di-rector of Christian Education and Youth and a new Director of Music and Organist. Our search for a new Christian Ed Director has been slow going. A strong candidate surfaced early on but unfortunately had to withdraw her name from consideration due to family obligations and responsibilities. As of this date, we are interviewing one other candidate who has good qualifications. We have posted the posi-tion with several local schools and seminaries as well as on on-line employment websites. We will continue to seek other ways of posting the position and attracting candidates. In the meantime, the members of our Christian Education Committee are working to secure Sunday School teachers for the fall.

The search committee for the Director of Music and Organist has interviewed four candi-dates. Two candidates have been invited back for second interviews which will include conducting a choir rehearsal. We have guest organists sched-uled for the next several weeks.

We ask for the continued prayers of the con-gregation as both committees continue their search!

“Falling Leaves” Tree

Presbyterian Women of Cherry Hill invites you to join them in collecting items to be distributed to 33 agencies within the Presbytery of Detroit, including The Second Mile Center. This is a great opportunity to provide as-sistance to those in need as we approach the cooler days of autumn.

Look for the “Falling Leaves” Tree in Weir Foyer, beginning Sunday, September 3rd. Each leaf lists an item for donation. Please pick a leaf and bring the item to church by Sunday, October 1st. There will be a basket by the tree for your dona-tions. Some items listed on the tree are towels, washcloths, underwear, socks, cleaning products and paper products. All items must be new.

Please contact Sharon Dean, Isamay Osborne or Sherry Brown, if you have any questions.

What are the Deacons up to now?

• We have been providing the Giant Cards for members to sign on Sunday mornings. These cards go to the “Member to Remem-ber” for each month, as well as some mem-bers who are hospitalized. They have been very well received. Cathie Wensorski has been creating these beautiful cards.

• At each Deacon Meeting, a Free Will basket is passed. This money has helped in so many ways. At the August meeting, the board voted to give $450.00 to Helping Hand.

• We are continuing the community lunches once a month. On a designated day, the deacons will pass out bag lunches to the Helping Hand clients. The money for the lunches also comes from the Free Will Offer-ing.

• The board also sends get well/thinking of you cards to individual members who may be having health issues or just need to know people are thinking of them. These cards are made by Cindy Brighton and are won-derful.

• The board also heads up the Backpack pro-gram.

If you have any questions for the board or if you would like to help with a special project, please call Elaine Filiak (734/287-3747).

Please keep these church members in your prayers, as they rely on God’s strength to help them through a difficult time.

MONDAY NIGHT ADULT BIBLE STUDY beginning Monday, September 18 at 7 p.m.

Chapel Parlor

SET APART: Holy Habits of Prophets and Kings

In today’s world, people want to be set apart – recognized, admired, fol-lowed, liked. But God wants us to be set apart in a different way. God wants the Holy Spirit to mark us and make us different from those around us so that we may know God and love God more, and so that others may be drawn to God, too.

This study of 1 and 2 Kings examines six holy hab-its of Old Testament prophets and kings who were set apart by their close walk with God – men such as Solomon, Elijah, Elisha, Hezekiah, and Josiah. We’ll explore the central stories of these intriguing men of God and some of the practices they ob-served: being devoted to God, listening to God, mentoring, practicing humility, worshiping God, dis-covering God’s word.

As we study what the Bible teaches about these six timeless practices, we’ll discover that they are not only for prophets and kings, but also for each one of us today. We’ll see that being set apart is not only for our own good, but also for the good of others as they come to see God in and through us.

All are invited to join us for this exciting and insight-ful study beginning Monday, September 18 at 7:00 pm in Chapel Parlor. Why not make this study a special part of your fall?

So what do you know about the prophets in general and the prophet

Micah in particular? Did you know that it was prophets who were largely responsible for the sur-vival of the Jewish people after they were con-quered by Assyria and the Babylon? You are invited to explore these verses and more as we explore the prophet Micah, his sayings and his world, starting Septem-ber 17th.

PLEASE NOTE: We are CHANGING THE TIME of class, to 11:45, after coffee hour. You are al-ready here for church, why not give class a try? Sunday, October 1st – 1:00 pm

Cherry Hill’s “Blessing of the Animals” service has become an annual fall tradition. This special service commemorates the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi – October 4. St. Francis was a great lover and protector of all of God’s creatures, great and small. All two and four footed, furry and feathery, crated or leashed friends are welcome! If you are unable to bring your pet, please bring a photograph. This brief service of blessing will take place on the front lawn of the church.

During coffee hour on October 1 and at the Blessing of the Animals service, a free-will offering will be received for the Dearborn Animal Shelter. Last year, the shelter handled almost 2,724 animals! This free will offering will be an additional way for us to share our care and concern for our special friends.
