Dear Friends of St. Ann,

The arrival of August brings the return of school and the anticipa-tion of fall. This past week our maintenance staff have been busy working on improve-ments around our cam-pus. Work is proceeding to install air conditioning in the parish social hall, roofers are on the office roof as I write this, and we are arranging to have an ultraviolet purification system installed in the school’s ventilation system. In addition, countless small projects have been completed in preparation for the return of our students. All of this is possible because of your ongoing generosity. Despite so many uncer-tainties, many of you have helped ensure that the care of our parish facilities and the ministries we con-tinue to provide are able to continue without interruption.

This period between the feast of the Assumption of Mary (August 15) and the nativity of Mary (September 8) is also a graced time to attend to the great confidence we have in the intercession of Mary and to be

renewed in devotion to Jesus through Mary. Our school children begin each school day with a seasonal hymn to Mary such as the Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen) and will end the school day with the canticle of Mary before Elizabeth, the Magnificat. This daily turning to Mary is a great example of the ways in which children at Light of Christ Academy are immersed in a culture of faith and grounded in the deep traditions that we are blessed to share as Catholics.

I pray that as a parish family we appreciate these great gifts and make some intentional effort each day to integrate the treasury of Catholic faith and wisdom in all that we say and do. We have indeed been greatly blessed and are pleased to be able to share these blessings joyfully. Please keep in your prayers today, all who struggle or suffer and all who labor under uncertainty or discouragement. Pray also for those affected by the current troubles in our nation and world, es-pecially the sick and impoverished. May God be our help and our strength!

Rev. James Richardson

In these uncertain times, one thing remains true, the love Jesus has for you. A blessing we have at St. Ann is the ability to spend time in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Peace, hope, and love can be found while spending time in His presence. At St. Ann we have created a welcoming atmosphere where one can spend time in Adoration of Him. It’s not crowded, it is a quiet place for prayer, and He is there waiting for you. Please consider spending 1 hour with Jesus.

Things to Know:

• Adoration continues in the church, rather than the chapel.

• Entry for Adoration is through the main doors 8 A.M.-5 P.M. and through the chapel door at all other hours.

NEW KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUSE-MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM

Men of St. Ann Parish, if you ever wanted to make a difference in the world by joining the Knights of Co-lumbus, now is the time. The new E-Memberships program is now available which provides the same benefits offered to Knights around the world and for a limited time we will waive the membership dues of $35 for the first year.

Join other men from our Parish by taking advantage of this great program. Just go to kofc.org/joinus and enter the code MCGIVNEY2020.

Our founder (Father McGivney) was faced with a pandemic in the 1880s, as we are today. In the face of that pandemic, in 1882, he founded the Knights of Columbus to help provide security and spiritual growth for Catholic families, & we continue to grow today.

Please take this opportunity to join us! Contact Mark Gentilia with questions at [email protected] or 269-760-3131.

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Ann Catholic Church August 23, 2020

RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION

Holy Communion will be distributed only under the Species of the Sacred Host. You may receive either on the tongue or in the hand. Please remove any masks and gloves as you approach the minister.

Pause at the mark on the floor, the reverence and the verbal exchange should take place 6 feet away: Bow – “The Body of Christ” – “Amen” – then step forward to receive.

If you receive in the hand, please approach the priest (or deacon or EMHC), place your right hand under your left hand creating a sort of throne upon which to receive the Lord. After receiving Jesus in your hand, step to the side, and place the Sacred Host gently in your mouth, making sure to consume the Sacred Host before stepping away. Then, simply replace your mask and return prayerfully to your seat.

If you choose to receive on the tongue please remove your mask before approaching. Bow slightly or kneel as the priest or minister elevates the Sacred Host and says “The Body of Christ.” Respond “Amen.” Then extend your tongue so that the tip of your tongue is past your bottom lip and hold it steadily there as the Sacred Host is placed on your tongue. If done while not moving one’s head or tongue while receiving, the risk of direct contact is minimized. In addition to the reverence given, kneeling also presents a more ad-vantageous angle for the priest or minister to place the Sacred Host on your tongue without contact. After receiving, replace your mask and return prayerfully to your pew.
